Hey DU'ers - You could learn a LOT from the Free Republic...
You still don't believe that the 2004 Election was stolen? Check out this article written in November, 1996. The author is probably Ronnie Dugger (The Nation).

Could the voting computers be pre-programmed to count votes in a way that favors a certain candidate-perhaps a candidate who has bribed a crooked company official or programmer? ...the possibility of hidden "subroutines" of programming code within the massive program which could suddenly interrupt the count and divert a few thousand votes from one candidate to another-a feat known as a "flip-flop" to experts concerned about potential computer vote fraud. Other potential dirty tricks which could be lurking inside Pandora's Black Box include the "Trojan Horse" (a set of commands concealed within the thousands of lines of code designed to rig the vote count and remain undetectable), and the "time bomb" in which the computer counts accurately until late in the tabulation when, after a certain number of votes have been counted, it suddenly begins to transfer every third or fourth vote meant for one candidate to his favored opponent.

In '96 only 62% of all votes were counted by computer: punch card or opscan readers or DRE's. Modems have been installed in many of the optical scan voting machines -- votes can be manipulated using cell phone technology. Central tabulators are, of course, easiest, but I think that voting machine mafia pulled out all of the stops on this election and used every means at their disposal to hack the vote.

The comments by the Freepers at the end of the article indicate that they believe that the voting machine companies may have stolen the '96 election for Clinton. Maybe his vote tally was unaffected, maybe they reduced Clinton's vote count, but couldn't quite pull the election away from him in '96.

It seems that people are only willing to talk about this travesty to justice and democracy when their candidate has just lost.

And, no, I don't read/post at Free Republic -- I was reading the article posted at DU earlier this morning by Dancing_Dave and followed the links. Here is the post:

2. you think?
Is it possible they are starting to wake up and discover that WE are all vulnerable to the whims of a few companies? The lobbyist search for the highest Bidder?

I'm sorry but my democracy is not for sale. I plan on stressing that in every form possible.

the fraud with the tallys goes back to the 1985!

pre-scored cards

Now did Clinton hijack it? That's hard for me to believe, but if they are willing to accept that Bush did, then perhaps I should keep an open mind about any presidential candidate.

3. Exactly - open minds are what we need...
It's hard for me to believe that Clinton hijacked it, too. It seems more likely that they shaved votes from his tally. At least two of the companies mentioned (Business Records Corporation of Dallas, Texas and Sequoia Pacific of Jamestown, New York) definitely have Republican ties. I don't know about Daneher Controls (Shoup).

4. They are speculating about out ways that Kerry rigged the machines
and we are speculating about how Bush rigged the machines.
They are probably also speculating about the reason Kerry is not contesting the vote or joining the lawsuit is that he is afraid of getting caught.
