Senator who will co-sign the Conyers electoral challendge Jan.6
After seeing in F-911 that not one Senator stepped forward in the 2000 electoral challendege to object? -- Do you think that Senator Boxer will be one to step forward on Jan. 6th.?

NEW YORK - The ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee told us tonight on Countdown that he and others in Congress are considering formally challenging the slate of electors who cast Ohio’s votes, when those votes are opened and counted before a joint session of Congress on January 6th.

“We’re prepared to do that,” Conyers said. “And we understand the law as well as you.” After the on-air interview ended, the Michigan representative added that he and his colleagues had not yet decided whether or not to take the extraordinary constitutional step, and he had not sought the support of a Senator who would have to co-sign the challenge.

1. I thought Conyers had decided to do this
why is he hesitating? And why was this comment 'off air'?

Do you have a link to this story?

4. Conyers is in the House....
They also need a Senator, any Senator..
(In F 9/11 there was a heartbreaking scene when Rep after Rep came up to speak, asking who would co-sign in Senate to investigate the blatent supression of the black vote in 2000..... and the sounds of silence reverberated in the halls.......)

9. This is the part I am referring to:
"the Michigan representative added that he and his colleagues had not yet decided whether or not to take the extraordinary constitutional step"

I thought he had ALREADY AGREED to do this. Why does this say he is still thinking about it?

8. It was in the Olbermann blog
KO said that he and Conyers had some additional discussion after the completion of program in which he interviewed Conyers. Here is the link to his blog:

This happened in the Dec 15 entry, which is still at the top of the page at the moment (around 3 PM Sunday). Here's an excerpt:

Conyers "prepared" to contest Ohio Electoral Vote (Keith Olbermann)

3. They should all stand with Conyers
They might only need one, but wouldn't it be refreshing to see all of the democrats stand at one time? I know, I'm dreaming. I'm really starting wonder why I support this party at all.

13. My leter to my congressmen
Message sent to the following recipients:
Senator Kennedy
Senator Kerry
Rep. Stephen F. Lynch

I have just read that Rep. Conyers is considering a refusal to certify
the 2004 election votes.

Please, I urge you as strongly as I can, that you MUST tell Rep. Conyers that you will stand with him and encourage him. We MUST refuse to allow another election to be stolen. We MUST refuse to allow our country to be taken from us again.

What George Bush and his cohorts have done, in every action they have
taken, has been nothing short of devastating. Please do not let him
continue on a path that will surely destroy our country.

We absolutely MUST NOT allow George W. Bush to stay in The Whitehouse even one day longer than January 21, 2005.

Please, you have pledged to uphold The Constitution and to protect the
citizens. The Constitution and America itself are in greater peril than they have been since The Civil War.

We need you now, more than ever before.

Please, refuse to certify the vote.

14. Your title is misleading
"Senator who will co-sign the Conyers electoral challendge Jan.6"

The word "will" misleads those reading the forum titles to believe that a Senator has come forward. A question mark after the sentence would have helped, too.

Congr. Maxine Waters (Dem-Los Angeles) said, last week, on the Randi Rhodes Show, "We are going to have to do it again!"--speaking of the Jan. 6 challenge. She'd just come back from the Conyers hearing and was shocked at the extent of vote suppression especially against black voters, and the evidence for electronic fraud.

Given the extent of the blatant, outrageous vote suppression against black voters--in plain violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965--and given the Democratic Senators' failure to support the House black caucus in '00, and failure to prevent this from happening again, and their failure to warn voters about Republican-controlled electronic vote tabulation machines (with SECRET source code)--it will be an utter disgrace for no Democratic Senator to come forward and sign the House petition. They should ALL come forward, every one, starting with John Kerry.

It will be the turning point for me--after 40 years of loyally voting Democratic. I'm getting my re-registration papers ready. If they don't seriously challenge this election, I've had it with them.

15. Maybe Conyers won't challenge it
unless he knows they have a senator onboard.

They know if they challenge it in the house and the senate doesn't challenge it, they'll have another F911 scene that will hurt the party.

My gut says they should do it anyway, the senators need to be accountable to their voters.

18. I believe that he and other reps will challenge
...even without a cosigning Senator, should that happen. Just as in 2000, members the Congressional Black Caucus will protest the voter suppression in the African American communities. The reps cannot just sit there and allow the tainted vote to be certified while saying nothing. It would be a betrayal. And I am hoping additional reps will also protest, not just those of the Caucus. There is certainly abundant reason, though it will take some courage.

Conyers may be holding back from being definite about it in order to sound more deliberate about it and to defuse accusations of partisanship in the hearings he is leading. It will also have more punch when it is announced if it is nearer to Jan 6 and more evidence has been assembled. Lots of reasons to delay a firm announcement even if the decision has already been made.

So the question keeps coming back to who will be the senator to cosign the challenge?

16. Possible sentators to join the reps
There have been a number of threads on aspects of this topic -- here's one of them, from Dec 14:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=203&topic_id=159171

Senator Barbara Boxer (Callifornia) seems to be the most often mentioned as a possibility to be "The One." Here's the site of a petition to her to do so. You can either download the file and send it by snailmail or you can fill it and submit it online. Because this is a national issue, you don't need to be one of her constituents to do this.
http://www.contestthevote.org

Senator Jeffords of Vermont is also being asked -- I don't have the link handy, but it's an article in a Vermont paper.

Senator Edwards is not a possibility because he is giving up his office and is out on Jan 3, before the vote on Jan 6.

As for Senator Kerry, well, that's the question, isn't it? People are working hard for other possibilities because they can't be certain that he will step forward on Jan 6. I haven't heard that there's a constitutional reason why he can't (anybody know for sure?), though even if he does intend to fight he may prefer that someone else is the official challenger.

24. Everyone with a Dem Senator, mail and e-mail them with
With these two key elements:

1.Evidence of nationwide fraud and violation of voting rights by Republican officials and firms.

2.A clear statement that you will definately NOT be supporting your Senator for re-election if they don't stand up on January 6th and fight this terrifying violation of our most basic voting rights!

25. I don't exactly understand
what will happen if a Senator does stand up. Won't the Congress have to vote? I mean a small minority of Congressmen and 1 Senator are not going to be able to overturn the election, are they?

So what exactly is the procedure, and does it accomplish anything?
