Lawyer in Maui needs help?

Lawyer volunteers to help with election-fraud suits

MAKAWAO – The attorney who represented Native American Indian Cort Gallup, originally of Canada, in a recent failed bid to run for Maui County Council has been recruited to help litigate election fraud lawsuits in Ohio.

She said she is seeking financial assistance to defray costs of the volunteer effort.

1. Who is she volunteering with? Arnebeck? The Greens?
Can we earmark donations to her through them?

2. Here's more on her
Bonnie McFadden said evidence shows individuals tampered with
the Triad System voting machines that handled at least 40 percent of Ohio’s votes.

But, “the question becomes how political is the Ohio Supreme Court, whether it will go by facts of law or go by a partisan vote in making a decision on the case,” said McFadden, who has practiced law on Maui for 18 years.

McFadden said she left Sunday for 2¢ weeks in Columbus, where she will gather and file affidavits and depositions.

People may mail donations made to Bonnie McFadden, 2070 Vineyard St., Wailuku 96793. Call her at 572-2400.

11. That's not what she said. She said Triad machines used for 40% of votes.

4. THIS IS A TOTAL JOKE
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 06:37 AM by gdub
A quick check of Martindale-Hubble, the national lawyers directory, shows no listing for Bonnie McFadden. Either this is a hoax or Ms. McFadden is such a reputable lawyer we should suggest she join John Kerry's crack election law team. Or better yet, Bush's national security law team! Perhaps she can write a memo on how election fraud isn't "fraud" after all?

If you would like, simply forward the checks to me so that I can go to Maui to look for Ms. McFadden. While I am there, I will have Mai Tai on the beach, and will raise a toast to every schmuck who sends me money.

I am very worried for us all.

5. but not all lawyers are listed in the
Martindale Hubble.

I'm not saying she's legit but you can't assume she's not because she is not in the Martindale Hubble.

10. I stand corrected
Ms. McFadden is apparently an attorney. However, it is very strange the way unsubstantiated solicitations show up on DU.

12. Unlisted
Not only are not all attorneys listed in Martindale Hubbell, but a very sizeable number of attorneys are not listed there. That's because you PAY for listings in that directory, though they do offer small complimentary listings. It's even in their FAQ:

"I can't find this attorney I am thinking of hiring - does that mean I should be suspicious? While we endeavor to list all attorneys by providing complimentary listings to all attorneys and law firms, not all choose to provide us with their information to publish."

6. Bizarre Posting
Yet another bizarre request for money makes it's way to the DU boards. The article doesn't state who recruited this woman or who she will be working with in Ohio.

7. If you are worried that this request is not legit then . . .
contact Maui News and verify the story. Get her telephone number and call her. Not all requests for money have to be eyed with suspicion. Just do a little homework.

8. Suspicion
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 10:57 AM by Vinnie From Indy
I was merely making an observation wondering aloud about the glaring lack of details included in the news article. The author obviously wasn't concerned with the traditional minimal standard of reporting the who, what, why etc. of the subject.

Not all requests for money have to be eyed with suspicion.

I guess if one's mother or church or friends requested money, there would be less of a reason to be curious. To extend that philosophy to every request is just plain silly and goes against even the most basic tenants of common sense.

I am not against fund raising or charitable causes, but when presented with vague requests for money, I take notice and I do cast a minimally critical eye at the issue.

9. She is indeed an attorney...
From the Honolulu Star Bulletin, Oct. 27, 2004

Hopeful appeals ouster from State House race
WAILUKU » State House candidate Cort Gallup is appealing a decision by Maui County Clerk Roy Hiraga to disqualify him from running for political office on Maui.
Gallup, who is seeking to unseat incumbent Chris Halford (R, Kihei) filed an appeal to the decision with the state Election Commission's Board of Registration on Maui on Monday.

Attorney Bonnie McFadden, representing Gallup, said the appeal means county officials should continue to process the election contest between Gallup and Halford. "As long as it's under appeal, the status quo remains," McFadden said.

13. ALL contributions should go DIRECTLY to Arnebeck's cause
Number 1 reason: he is spearheading the effort, and will be seen as responsible for any contributions, whether they go to him directly or not; if someone runs off with a load of money, guess who will be blamed by the media?

Number 2 reason: too many requests for donations makes it look like a scam.

Number 3: Focus, focus, focus.

To contribute to Mr. Arnebeck's legal efforts in Ohio, go to http://www.thealliancefordemocracy, and click on the Paypal link. You do not need a Paypal account to contribute.

Notice I say "contribute," not "donate," because it's my information your dollars are tax deductible. If you want to make it a loan, you can do it as such, also.

If you haven't heard Mr. Arnebeck's radio interview, I encourage you to do so. It's 45 minutes long, but well worth it.

http://tinyurl.com/3zoc8

You can stream it (by clicking on the link that says "http" in the table at the bottom of the Web page) or can download it for rebroadcast or other distribution (by right-clicking the same "http" link and giving it a file name on your computer).

Thanks to DU'er Amaryllis for being the first to alert us to this interview.

14. I think the article was meant for local readers, not the great big www
For locals who know her and her work, to help her with expenses. I doubt it was ever intended to be posted to a large readership. It's a teeny local Maui paper.

15. But that's the problem, it does end up on the great big www
She also could have directed people to Mr. Arnebeck's work and how to contribute to him, if she is working in tandem with him. If she isn't working in tandem with him, then I'm wondering how much she can get done on her own or with a group of people.

Communication and cooperation are the best method of getting our message out there. As I said, too many people involved and asking for money tends to give it the appearance of a scam, like everyone jumping aboard and asking for money.

I'm just saying this as a cynical skeptic, especially with the ongoing Bev Harris debacle. She really hurt us with the dramatics over Olbermann.

16. It is a tiny mention in a tiny local Hawaiian paper.
Google her, I did.

Basically, I do not think she is soliciting funds from you, anyway. It was directed at locals who know her and her work.

I think it's for local consumption. And I do agree that if you have any money to spare it should go to Arnebeck. That's where mine's going. Though I am curious what this woman plans on doing here?

20. Here is Bonnie McFadden, in Ohio!
In the meantime, among the attorneys who have come at their own expense to join Ohio's presidential election challenge:

Bonnie McFadden, formerly a deputy public defender, law professor from both the University of New Guinea and the University of Hawaii, and director of the Cambodia Defenders Project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, currently resides in Maui. Bonnie believes that Conyers’ Committee hearings have provided clear evidence of illegal election practices. “Democracy cannot survive without honest elections. The Ohio election fraud lawsuits are about saving our democratic form of government. There is nothing more important than that.”
