Has anybody here thought about running for office?
Has this past election inspired anybody into running for office?

Just curious.

3. I have been approached, but I don't know if I'll go that route or not.
While I would like to serve, the thought of running is chilling.

5. My husband ran for Quarum Court
about 8 years ago. Then there was a logging protest, and things got ugly-we were threatened with a gun, one environmentalist was beaten and his house burned down-the usual drill. What was sad was he was working for a local logger who was environmentally friendly at the time (no clear cuts), and his platform was protect local loggers. But the big companies brought in 'speakers' who convinced the locals we were trying to shut them down. The upshot was that my husband came in dead last in the election-but he got 30 votes, more than the known active environmentalists in our township.

6. Yes.
But there is not way it's going to happen anytime soon. Right now I'm working on getting a verifiable paper ballot. Until every vote gets counted, running for elected office is a waste of time.

8. I would love to, but I can only imagine the attack ads once my
opponent talked to some people who I went to High School/College with. Or got a hold of some old pics!

9. I have, just to highlight the election fraud issue.
Apparently, media have to give candidates "equal time" and if you're a single-issue candidate, you can just expound upon that issue. You don't really have to "run" per se, especially if you don't care whether you actually win! Where was I reading about this... maybe did someone on DU post something like this, about a month ago? Anyone remember?

12. Bullshit
The fairness doctrine went out with Reagan. I worked with a School Superintendent candidate in Florida. She was highly qualified, was a former chief of staff for a Mass. State Senator, former Mass. State Senate candidate, and ran programs there with budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars. When she moved to Florida, she took a job as a nurse. She also had a Masters Degree in education, with an emphasis on administration.

The Media, when the did mention her, always refered to her as a nurse, and completely ignored her qualifications.

20. well, again, you're assuming that I'd want to talk about anything
other than election fraud. If nothing else, the media would have to say, "kk897, voting rights advocate, has a single plank in her nutty ol' platform," or "kk897's entire candidacy rests on the issue of election fraud, thus she is completely unqualified for the position."

Or maybe I could say I was the candidate of the "Voting Rights Party." That would at least have to get mentioned.

The whole thing would be a shameless publicity ploy. And, actually, since I work in publicity (I'm ashamed to admit), I'd know how to milk it.

BTW, some guy in, like, Idaho basically did that and actually won this year. Wish I could remember more. But he didn't spend a penny on his "campaign". I think maybe his issue was campaign spending!

10. Exact opposite
I ran for Congress earlier this year.

The morning of Nov. 2nd I was 90% sure I was going to run again in '06.

That evening I was 100% sure I wasn't running. If I ran I was going to start in Jan. 2005, but decided I wasn't going to invest 2 years and a lot of money for another disaterous result. People are still calling asking me to run, but it's a VERY hard job, and the worst aspect is constantly begging for money, from people you don't know.

11. I wish I could
But because I am not religious (and will not pretend to be), and wasn't very well behaved in high school or college, it would be impossible. But I am considering other ways to get involved in local government that don't involve running for office. Does anyone have ideas on that angle?

16. I'm thinking of starting "meetup" groups in my community...
Local democrats meet every so often, but I don't think there's anything really organized until around election time. Democrats need to be out in people's faces (in a nice way of course) as often as possible, not just election time.

13. I'd rather play paint ball naked in the snow.

The main problem with the present system? Anyone willing to subject themselves to public character assassination and pay ten times the offered salary to get a job should not be trusted. They're either crazy or has ulterior motives.

17. I did.
Of course, I lost, since I'm a Democrat in Kansas, but I fought the good fight. Ran for the Kansas State House. Unfortunately, I got a very late start because I'd never thought about running until the Democratic Party called and asked me to do so.

We need to take back the Democratic Party by running for office, especially at the local level. Become a precinct committee chair person. If you don't want to run yourself, find good people to run for things like City Council, County Commissioner, Water Board, School Board, all the local races that really do a lot but most people don't think about. Help candidates raise money. Go door-to-door on behalf of candidates.

It's not going to happen in just a few election cycles, but if we start at the bottom we can take this country back eventually.

The other choice, it seems to me, is to give up entirely.
