A black flag
That have been several threads on DU with suggestions on how to protest election fraud. My wife and I were wondering what we could do on Inauguration Day to display our disdain for the criminal actions that occurred on November 2nd, as well as the criminals in this administration. Since we have a flag-pole holder on our front porch that we use to fly the flag on July 4th, and to display birthday and holiday flags, we are thinking about getting a simple black flag to fly beginning January 20th. This flag will fly daily until the Bush Administration leaves the White House.

We thought about flying the US flag upside down, but since this would invite a rock through the front window (we live in a predominantly GOP area), we decided against it. A black flag, however, would be more subtle and understood by those passers-by who are following the election fraud story. It could also invite inquiries that we would be only to happy to answer.

Since many of us might already have a flagpole holder, or could put one up with minimal expense and effort, I thought a black flag might be a potent, yet subtle symbol for many of us to protest both Bush and election fraud.

Imagine an entire nation flying black flags!

1. Cool idea
But how about a deep purple flag, symbolizing the fact that the US is a purple county, not a red county, no matter what the Diebold machines say?

I think that's more of a positive and inclusive message.

6. Hadn't thought of that...
We checked with a local flag company (one can order just about ANY flag on the planet) about the black flag, however, I'll check to see if a simple deep purple flag is available.

I like the idea of it being a "positive and inclusive message."

However, a part of me still likes the "in your face" connotations of a black flag...}(

18. Deep Purple
Love it!

Purple signifies dominion and power. We have the power. I'll check for one too! It makes a great anti-Bush statement.

27. Deep Purple Ribbons?
Maybe tie one on your car like they do the yellow ribbons for the troops...

2. I love the idea.
I have not flown my flag in the last two years simply because I am embarrassed to be American right now.

3. Excellent Idea...
The American orange. Black.
Black flags do remind me of roach spray though...

4. Well, if you're getting technical...
The black flag is the symbol for anarchy, not necessarily protest.

But just as the upside down flag (which is a distress symbol) has gotten converted in meaning, maybe this would as well.

7. How about an Orange flag?
Of all colors, orange seems to be the one associated with fair elections and preserving our democracy.

12. I agree
I think the Orange flag will point directly to the election fraud, whereas a black flag wouldn't immediately be understood...Just a thought...

8. Maybe orange???
Upside down flag as a distress symbol sends a very powerful message- but a lot of people don't know what it means and take it wrong (thus the rock through the window). I think the same could happen with the black flag; maybe orange- that color seems to have a clear meaning in these post-Ukraine debacle days...

10. The only, ONLY reservation I have about a black flag...
A couple of months ago, I remember reading about how the insurgents in Iraq were marking the locations of American deployments with black flags for RPGs and mortar attacks. Kind of like a low-tech radar...

My only reservation about flying a black flag is it could be construed as support for the Iraqi resistence...

However, since this story only appeared once...and I read it here on DU...I seriously doubt if the average American knows about this Iraqi tactic.

5. I like it
I also like the purple flag idea. hmm.

Either works, I think. Maybe we should all bring black flags, banners, etc to Wahsington?

14. OK, OK, I have it! At tri-color flag...
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 12:13 PM by KansDem
Three colors:

Black--to represent the death of democracy; mourning in America...
Purple--to represent an all-inclusive nation...
Orange--to represent fair elections...

arranged thusly:

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Notice the arrangement of the colors:
Black on the bottom--the nation in distress, "at its lowest point";
Purple in the middle--recognition that we may "move up" as an all-inclusive nation;
Orange on top--as an "all-inclusive" nation, we will have fair elections, the zenith of our endeavors.

Ad astra per aspera!

Damn! I'm ready...!!!

25. No, not upside down...
Should * be inagurated, I am in mourning, not in distress.

I am not asking for some other to come and help me. I am stating that I am mourning a great loss.

I can take it to some of the other message boards i am on. Unity looks very good when people are standing together. I like the multi idea.

21. Upside down flag is a sign of distress
Since our nation is in deep distress, I can't think of a better symbol. I wear one, pinned upside-down on my coat, to every protest.
