Ohio’s recount of the presidential vote, unnecessary as it was, served the useful purpose of reinforcing the system of tabulating the vote.

Upon completion of the costly, timeconsuming recount, Democratic Sen. John Kerry had a net gain of 285 votes out of nearly 5.7 million cast.

The recount was requested by the Green and Libertarian parties, which said they wanted to ensure that every vote counted. They paid the required $113,600 for the recount, which covered only a small fraction of the actual cost.

Kerry gained 734 votes, while President Bush added 449. Many of these votes involved punch-card ballots that had hanging chads. Ballots that initially had been ruled invalid were declared genuine.

I canceled mine too, as soon as they endorsed Bush. But I still get their emails and read the headlines because it helps to know what we are up against. This is the paper that many read. This is where many are getting what they believe are the facts. This is what we are up against. I like knowing what I am up against.
