Need a name for our election fraud/awareness group
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 10:37 AM by arnheim
We have started a group to continue the fight against election fraud. It's basically focusing on educating elected officials, the media and Americans about fraud and then working on election reform.

Here is our mission statement:

The mission of the Election Reform group is to solicit solid action items and then work at those items in an organized manner to promote election reform to our elected officials, media and every American who votes.

We just need a name. Any suggestions?

Only postive suggestions, please. If you don't believe there was fraud and you think that we are all kooks, then kindly keep your opinions to yourself.

Once we get enough suggestions, we can vote on the name.

Thanks.

On that theme:

"Americans for democracy"

"Americans for Democratic Elections"

The RW uses words like this so that if you oppose the group, you oppose "democracy" of course.

It also speaks to the fact that we don't have a "democracy" at a time when our elections are in question.

24. agreed, don't put "fraud" in the name
the problem is bigger (although you can argue that a lot of the suppression and obstruction amounts to fraud as it is deliberate). But you want to be able to address all the problems--incompetence, partisanship, mechanical error etc. --to get at the whole incredible vulnerability of the election process, even when fraud in the legal sense is not proven. Term "fraud" is too narrow.

Shove it right back in Delay's face. The song "Yankee Doodle" was originally sung by the Brits as a derisive taunt toward the Colonial soldiers. They took it, made it their anthem, and shoved it up the Brits noses.

I think it is important to stress that an unverifiable election is uncertifiable.

If not in the name, shouldn't this be part of the mission statement.

27. another kick for arnheim proposal
yes--good approach--educational, constructive and positive. To attract a broad range of supporters to keep on top of "action items." Two things I think about re. name:

1. Convey that it's a citizens action group
2. Imply need for urgency, immediate attention, response to specific problems....an Orange X instead of a Red Cross...I think "reform" is a word that has been used a lot already and maybe doesn't imply the urgency, but of course the goal is reform.

Suggestions:

Citizens for Election Protection
Voters for Election Protection
Americans for Election Protection
Election Watch USA (kinda like neighborhood watch or tax watch)

--such a formal name could be Called The Orange Party informally

30. The Right to Vote Coalition
No reform will be complete w/o a right to vote amendment or some federal legislation to ensure equal rights to vote in federal elections. Why are millions kept from voting because of felony convictions in some states (esp. blacks in the South), while felons in jail are allowed to vote in other states? Just one example of "unequal" voting rights in presidential elections that put Scrubya in office in 2000.

I like the idea of making this a rights issue. It has broad appeal and addresses current problems with counting, vote-switching, access to polls, suppression, registration rules, much more.

36. I think it's essential to include the word "Patriots"
because this has been usurped by the Repugs at every turn.

This is an issue where we, as Democrats, or members of ANY party, can take back the concept of patriotism. This is real mom and apple pie stuff. Not the faux flag-waving, bumper-sticker kind of patriotism we see so much of these days. It's the REAL DEAL!

It's THE VOTE stupid! You don't screw with that, Repukes! You just don't! Wave those flags as much as you like, the Vote and the Constitution are SACRED in this country, or they damn well ought to be.

This is an opportunity to fight all those who would try to claim American Patriotism unilaterally from the loyal opposition party. And it will work without regard to party too! Either you're for us or against us. We make NO distinction between those who would steal the vote, and those who provide cover for them by obstructing legislation to protect the vote.

And our slogan should be: TRUST but VERIFY!

That's it for now. I have company.

59. So many great suggestions here. Arnheim, my vote, lol, would
be to use something that isn't too nationalistic.

We've seen what happens when nationalism become akin to religion - people go nuts and stop thinking. Maybe we could avoid further fanning that flame? I may be wrong but it's something to think about anyway.

I understand the argument about taking back the language of patriotism and agree to an extent. Just wonder if we aren't unneccessarily poking people in a sore spot at the same time.

81.  Is this just a DU thing, or is it going to be more general?
There are already a number of groups who share this mission, aren't there?

84. Yes, there are a number of groups
We want to work and organize all of these groups together - ours and every other one. That's why part of our mission is to organize and connect with other groups.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 09:13 PM by SnoopDog
I read thru most of these names - many are just perfect.

Here is my 2 cents:

Americans For Transparent Election Reform (AFTER)
or Reality....

(As in AFTER the bullshit of 2000 and 2004... stuff like that)

I owe credit to the previous DUer ideas for this one.

Voters for Open and Transparent Elections/Citizens Against Rigged Elections

The 'voters for open and transparent elections' half could be more focused on Election REFORM, while Citizens against Rigged Elections could focus more on election fraud investigations

both are of the same org. or group, but are kind of like 'departments' of the entire thing?

haha, VOTE CARE: we care about your right to vote.

95. Pro Democracy USA
Or something that uses "pro-democracy" in it. I do like that word, it encompasses "the whole enchilada" and is is a clear, concise, positive expression of a desired outcome....

"election reform"... well, not specific enough. They could very well give us "reform" that's worse than what we've got now!

"Fraud" as has been mentioned is too limited & limiting.

I also like the association with similar movements in the various other countries of the world.
