Jefferson County, WV, clerk : Election Procedures and Tabulation...
Integrity Advisory Committee being formed. I will apply.

  • "The county currently uses a punch card voting system. The West Virginia Secretary of State has expressed interest in converting the state to more modern voting systems, Maghan said. Before the county spends a good deal of money on a new voting system, it should make sure it would be getting a good one, she said.

2. We use optiscans in Wood Co.
not as perilous to the voter as punchcards, but one hell of a lot better than BBV. I hadn't heard of anyone in WV calling for 'more modern voting systems" but I'll fight that one tooth and nail.

3. Maybe the new GOP SOS - Betty Ireland wants it?
I hadn't heard of it either.

6. right-- optiscans would be a lot better
than touchscreens. At least you still have an auditable paper ballot. The problem with optiscan seems to be the need for higher security for the machines and more scrutiny on procedures. But the machines themselves are just counters, big adding machines as I understand it. It would be helpful to know how the county deals with spoils, undervotes etc with any system.

Hope you are successful in WV in getting them to resist the DRE salesmen.

5. There's a sizeable number of town clerks

...who swear by opscan, and don't like DRE. Hopefully they will listen to their peers.
