I Believe.
Tonight, I believe.

I believe that we've reached a tipping point.

A United States Senator dared to stand up and say, No. We're not going to formalize this election without talking about everything that seems wrong, and unsettling, and un-American about it. Thank you, Barbara Boxer.

Two United States Senators looked in their hearts, and knew they had to say, No. We aren't going to confirm the president's friend and advisor for a cabinet post without discussing the lies, the misinformation, and the venal narrow-mindedness that took this nation into a war with an awful, bloody toll. Thank you, Senator Boxer, and thank you, John Kerry. And thank you also to the Democrats who pointedly voiced their heartfelt concern that the leadership be of a higher, more honest caliber.

And now, on the eve of another fraudulent inauguration, I believe: that the forces of anti-democratic greed that made this election travesty happen, and the ones preceding it, have peaked in their power; that their crimes are coming to light; and that true democracy, America's greatest gift to itself and the world, will triumph.

We believe that Dr. Seuss was right: the last, smallest voice down in Whoville can make all the difference when it joins with the rest.

We believe, because we're lucky here to know other people who believe, and who know that the right thing must be done.

This is dedicated to the difference that DU has made, to its incredible assortment of talented brains, and to all those wondering whether hope should be abandoned along with hard work, and who decide to show up to say:

I Believe.

5. I believe...
... our representatives are finally getting it. You can tell by their actions. We MUST continue to be persistent in letters/email to news organizations and elected leaders to explain the issues clearly when they are wrong and in showing appreciation when they come through. This will be a long, difficult fight. If they lead, we must support them. Remember John Kerry's words: "Now is a time to stand firm." Never forget.;)

People are beginning to notice that the chimperor has no clothes.

Even the people in his own party, now that his coat tails have been dragged back into office over their trail of slime, are looking to put some distance between * and themselves, "triangulating" away from the fatal flaws of his legacy.

The Shrub is now yesterday's sushi. Even the Repubs are checking to see what else is in the fridge.

and I believe that Bush knows that Kerry knows who the real president is,and that the closest thing to a man-date that Bush will have is Kerry breathing down his back, in addition to Boxer and others.
I also have faith that true-Republicans are not going to let Bushco destroy this country.
I believe that he will not serve out his full term.

10. I almost wonder...
What good is believing? What good are our mutual reassurances? No matter what, the forces of darkness seem to be winning again and again. I wonder what point there is in resisting anymore. On the eve of Bush's second fraudulent inauguration, there doesn't seem to be any point in fighting...

I fear for my child's future.

12. Hi MichaelTheCat
Welcome to DU:hi: I remember people saying there was no point in fighting against an unjust war back in the 60's also. Until finally there were too many small voices to be ignored. Yes, the voices of darkness do have their day from time to time, but so will we.

It's ok to wonder, it's a wonder more people don't.

Look at it this way... it was bound to happen - this election stealing business. Well, it happened on our watch, and it is now our duty to see that the mistake does not happen again, eh?

When I start to dis-believe, I remind myself of the people who gave everything, some, even their lives, to see that our freedoms came to be. We can never give up, just as so many before us never gave up.

I Believe.

We MUST continue to be persistent in letters/email to news organizations and elected leaders to explain the issues clearly when they are wrong and in showing appreciation when they come through. 23. It's important to keep believing
This from an op-ed piece in the NYT today. It's ostensibly about people "getting over it", but it has some pithy things to say about not getting over it too.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/20/opinion/20gilbert.html

Of course, not everyone will be happy today, because not everyone has this talent for reasoning his way to happiness. Throughout history, there have always been a few unfortunates who found it impossible to reframe negative events in positive ways, and these poor souls were predictably less happy than the rest of us. Lincoln, for example, was perpetually melancholic. Martin Luther King Jr. had more bad than good days. "Suffering and evil often overwhelm me," said Gandhi from the midst of a depression, "and I stew in my own juice."

Many of the heroes and redeemers we most admire were unhappy people who found it impossible to change how they felt about the world - which left them no choice but to change the world itself. Outrage, anger, fear and frustration are unpleasant emotions that most of us vanquish through artful reasoning; but unpleasant emotions can also be spurs to action - clamorous urges that we may silence at our peril.

I believe. Today was truly heartening. Of course, I didn't watch any of the coronation, just the protests. Not only was it heartening, it was educational, as well.

The nay votes on Condi reinforced the belief I've always had in John Kerry, and Barbara Boxer really makes me believe there will be no backing down. I believe pretty soon, the nay votes will become the majority of the dems, because our voices will be heard.

I believe truth ALWAYS will prevail in the end, as long as it is out there to see.

44. I Believe-2008
I will say it now...
I believe John Kerry will be inaugurated for President on January 20, 2009. I believe he will take a long hard look at himself and his last campaign and realize the biggest mistake he made, he wasn't himself. Instead of being his real true self we all know, he was a fake, and not a good one at that. He couldn't get his message out, and many saw him as a flip flopper.

For the people that knew the true John Kerry we were optimistic, but we knew we had problems when he was given the name flip-flopper, and his advisor's told him not to defend it or fire back, he knew better, we knew better.

Believe with me, if it isn't John Kerry you believe will b inaugurated, tell me who is it?Just remain optimistic because the future will be bright, bright and blue.....

I hope JK doesn't run in 08 because we've already seen what he can't quite do, and that is win against a George Bush, and the republicans will probably nominate someone just like our current prez.

However, i give JK credit for a lot of stuff, and I hope he stays active in fighting Bush's policies. Because we need people like that in our party.

53. Belief is mandatory!
The I Believe thread has always been first and foremost about believing that a stolen election would not stand.

This thread belongs here as much as it ever did; maybe moreso, because anyone who doesn't believe that we need fair and free elections after the last abomination shouldn't be here.

And we need to share not just facts and ideas, but energy, enthusiasm, and optimism. We need to be able to share the less tangible indications of how this struggle is proceeding.

I am bleever, and I approve this message.

Though I love Horton, the fact remains he is an elephant and as this image portrays, the repugs have our fragile little world in the grasph of their trunk and we have to keep screaming "WE ARE HERE" and make the rest of our nation and the world know that the evil repukes do not own our nation and we won't let them destroy it!

I BELIEVE! WE ARE HERE!

66. Jan. 25, 2005 (Full Moon tonight) Hi Bleever, Jan. 19th was my
birthday. It's been a hard couple of weeks but I still believe that * will fall. I predict by Aug. 2005 at the latest. I hope it won't take that long.

I do believe, by faith, not by sight, that the evildoer and his cohorts will be known for what they are liars and thieves...fantastic deceivers. I am hoping that somehow, that still small voice combined with the others in Whoville will make a mighty roar. (Dr. Suess was a very intelligent fellow.)

I don't know how. I don't know when. But I must believe and I do. It's been difficult because every time I think, this is it, it hasn't been but I refuse to give up. I believe that John Kerry was born for such a time as this. I believe he was born to lead. I believe John Edwards is a brilliant lawyer who has taken on giant criminals before. I think he too was born for this kind of thing. I think some believer said it best some time ago when they said these were the last two guys in the USA that BushCo should try to pull this crap with.

Well, time will tell. Waiting. Watching. Hoping. Believing. Thanks Bleever for being here and thanks to all the believers who know that there is ALWAYS HOPE!

70. I believe
that the arrogance of this administration will bring them down.
I believe that as they run out of ways to cover up their crimes, they will try to divert public attention with elevated terror alerts and "positive" reports in Iraq. On reflection, "I believe" they're doing that now.

How long can they hide it? Only until the small voices expose them. Only until those voices who refuse to give up, refuse to "get over it", are heard over the cacophony of the MSM and the rovian spin machine.

I believe DU, and other discussion boards like it, serve to unite those voices, allowing them to share and focus knowledge. United, those voices are able to reach out through the internet(s) in a way not possible in earlier years. Just as DNA changed the face of the criminal justice system, the collective sharing of information now available will bring these criminals to justice.

I believe in working together with those who may disagree with me on candidates, policy, and procedure, toward the common goal of seeing a John Kerry, Howard Dean, Wes Clark, or any number of other good people leading this country.

I believe that the words" I believe" show hope of a better future for our children, our country, and the world community.

77. I believe I'll sleep real good tonight. A slow, steady heartbeat
is what this community has been, blood pumping in, eager muscles in rhythm, desire for life in each cell.

And somewhere between the yes and no of each cell, and the rising and falling of each breath of circumstance and demand, and the innumerable computations of the brain, we find ourselves still here, a living, breathing, thinking body of conscience and knowledge.

Not without the occasional charlie horse or migraine, but able nonetheless to see forward, and to make things happen.

78. The New Hampshire Review
Sorry to crash your thread, but I'm looking for a favor. I am the Editor-in-Chief of new journal of poetry and politics called The New Hampshire Review. We're looking for progressive political essayists for inclusion in our inaugural issue. We've already had some outstanding poetry submissions, and expect our readers will be literary, but not necessarily political junkies. Therefore, essayists will have an opportunity to reach an audience which is unconverted, so to speak. As a new member at DU, I'm unable to start a new thread myself, and I'm wondering if someone would be kind enough to post our call for submissions on my behalf.

With thanks,

Don't forget that the repug game-plan was for Rice to be confirmed on Inauguration Day. blivet** didn't get the rubber stamp he wanted. I'm encouraged by the number of senators willing to dig their heels in, even if the end result seems unchanged. It does matter how you play the game. It does matter whether or not you defy an oppressor, even when the cards are stacked against you. If the field of resistance to blivet** widens by only a fraction with each attempt, then the attempt is worthwhile. It's an endurance contest, to be sure, but one that I think can ultimately be won.

101. Believers, did you see Kerry's speech yesterday on CSPAN?
It was reported by the AP and on TV, radio and in print around the world. It was a front page story in the Guardian, UK and front page in a Japanese paper online.

There were several terrific sound bites and basically Kerry threw down the gaunlet to Bush and GOP, cover the kids of America for healthcare.

Where is the coverage?

Is the White House that terrified by Kerry that they have "persuaded" the press not to cover him in a big way.

I looked for the story on the AP and I had the reporters name and the date the story was published and it didn't come up. I had to Google the author and the story date in order to have the full 138 items come up for me. It was no where on Google News, or the major networks which is interesting since CSPAN felt it was significant enough to cover LIVE yesterday! Go CSPAN!

and another subject,

Did you hear Harry Reid in the Senate on closing statements for Rice?
"Shut up and vote" is not democracy!

Isn't that the greatest quote. Remember it, I believe it will go down in history as a turning point for the Bush Administration.

Yes I believe, the 57 million plus that "voted" for Kerry are not going to sit down and shut up.

Republicans for saying that the debate was a waste of time and Andy Card saying it was petty, etc.

Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) had two great quotes:

Silence is not an important part of American history, but debate is.

``Shutup and vote'' is not democracy .

The Shut up and vote quote was referring to what the Republicans would like all the Dems to do.

113. Hey there, bleever!
Aw, nothing all that creative with the magnets. More a large collection of how I truly feel about unprovoked war, torture, Junior, flying monkeys, and the stupidity of the so-called 'official' majority in this country. No graphics. I saved the impact for the words, alone. Oh, of course I did use special fonts. A 'Skeleton's Bones' font for the letter w, for instance. Riffs on the B/C campaign stickers. "The Completely Clueless for Bu*h." Guaranteed to raise blood pressures. The truth is pointed. I hope it hurts.

The best thing is, they're all magnets, so I can interchange them on days I feel more/less confrontational or when certain news hits the corporate media. Like this week, when all of those Marines were killed in one day. That prompted a complete change with a strong anti-war, "Support the Troops. Bring Them Home" theme. Plus, some pointed remarks about supporting something they're not participating in and urging them to fight for their own oil by enlisting. There are probably a number of cheery comments about the coming draft, too, and that their children will have them to thank for it. Community chatter like that.

Hey, it burned off a lot of energy and kept me from crushing the many flying monkeys littering this board two weeks ago. Plus, it feels good to counter all of those stupid Junior stickers in these parts.

It's been a rough few weeks on the political front, but now that the Unholy Inaugurination is past, things are looking up. The new Freeman et al paper on the Mitofsky report is great, pointing out that while Mitofsky falls back on the notion that R's don't talk to pollsters, their own data show the OPPOSITE bias. Real heavy hitters on that panel, and they're not going to stop. I think they're gonna take this election apart piece by tiny piece, with the inevitable conclusion of making * a pariah of history.

114. A Neat Story
I am a partner in a martial arts school. Last week we received a professional magazine with a picture of ** on the front page. This organization chose to appoint his fraudulency to the "Hall of Fame". :puke:

I had "plans" for this magazine, so I did not put it away. One of our students (an active duty Marine) saw the magazine and asked the Sensei if he could look at it. The Sensei told him, that he had better make it quick, because I was probably going to destroy it. He pointed out their most recent inductee into the hall of fame. The Marine threw the magazine down in disgust.

What a heart warming moment. :loveya:

As to the fate of the magazine. I ripped out the hall of fame story, stapled our return address over Smirkey's face and wrote "Cancel our subscription" with a grease pencil across the text of the article. I will be sending a copy to all of their advertisers.

Everywhere you look, you will find believers. We are strong and we are growing. We have taken up this fight, and we are not going anywhere. NNNGU

120. I Believe
in the power of this thread. As long as we remain vigilant, dedicated, and willing to fight, I believe that we will win.

At the end of the day, I know one thing. I fight for what I believe in, to the depth of my soul. I know that we fight for what is right. We fight for those that do not know the truth. We fight for those that are unable to fight for themselves.

Our enemy is strong, but it would be unwise to underestimate us. I hope that they continue on their arrogant path because it will make our job that much easier. Ever day I find new heroes and find new respect for the old heroes.

I look to the future with a great deal of hope. We have been through dark days before. Life has a way of calling upon certain generations to fight for what others were allowed to take for granted. We have been given the call, and I am proud to stand beside each one of you.

The line has been drawn, and I intend to hold that line. It will not be easy, and it will come at a cost, perhaps a great cost. But in the end, will it not be worth it?

To the good fight :toast:

NEVER GIVE UP

especially after seeing JFK on Meet the Press on Sunday. I believe he is calm, rational, has our best interests in mind, and is in the trenches daily working for us.....AND that he believes he should have been the one giving the Inaugural Address instead of W. The following exchange made me tear up......for him, for us.

MR. RUSSERT: Let me show you a photograph from Inauguration Day. Here is George W. Bush giving his second inaugural address. And there watching is John Kerry.

SEN. KERRY: I was in the wrong seat there, wasn't I?

Probably would've only needed a week, but I couldn't bring myself to stay away from on-line news, so that took a lot out of me right there. ;) I feel like we've got this crushing weight hanging over us. It's distracting and it's threatening, but it doesn't change my mind about how deadly it is, that we're going to fight to have it removed, or that we're going to win that fight.

I believe. No doubt about it. Dog-tired yet still full of fire, I believe.

135. Patience Is The Most Challenging Requirement
Senator Kerry continues to improve with age! Yes, I agree profoundly with the Reverend Jackson that Mr. Kerry conceded way too soon. However, there's no reversing that decision. I have decided that one of the most effective ways of fighting for genuine, meaningful election reform which will stop the wholesale cheating in its tracks is to support and work with PDA. If you didn't catch William Rivers Pitt's interview with their top man, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It convinced me to donate $40 to their organization:

139. I Believe my State of the Union would go something like this:
I believe that the state of the union is under the stress of powerful anti-democratic forces, but that the signs of its resilience are already manifesting, and that these signs grow with each passing day.

I believe that we have gone from asking, “What are they hiding?” to wondering, “How long can they hide it?”, and that now we are moving into the phase of “How long can everyone ignore it?”

Between the unprecedented low ratings for a president supposedly just re-elected, to the vast wellspring of grass-roots efforts and awareness in ten thousand forms, to the suddenly awake and outspoken democrats in Congress who stand up to say no to lies and torture and concerted national embezzlement, we see where the momentum is.

And woe is them, for our momentum is growing, with vigor and passion.

197. I believe John Kerry said it all when he stated that
John Kerry told FOX News' senior correspondent Geraldo Rivera that he believes he lost because the Osama Bin Laden video tape released a few days before the election may have scared the American electorate.

"It was that Osama tape — it scared them ."
http://www.perspectives.com/forums/forum4/20609.html

I believe John Kerry has been acting as though computer fraud- Kenneth Blackwell - Disenfranchisements of voters rights were things that were the figment of imagination of countless millions.

Kerry said ALL your votes would be counted? -- being realistic? we now know this simply wasn't the case and never happened.

Sad to say, I believe Mr. Kerry ended up being nothing more then the great white hope!

With the lowest approval ratings of a “re-elected” president, and the lowest credibility to go with it, and the Democratic side of the joint session sitting rock still while the Repubs jump to their feet at every applause line in this SOTU, he is the lamest of lame ducks.

I believe that few people have any idea of the tremendous subterranean forces building that make the uncovering of the crimes of this fraudulent election as inevitable as continental drift.

of nature...the continental drift and the subterranean movement; strong and real they are.

As for the State of the Union address it's just another lame event for him where his admirers are up his ass. It's so staged and fake his "presidency" - so pathetic! Disgusting really. "President Chicken Little" or wait, is it "President Chicken Shit" not to worry, I think that they will both work. I don't trust him. If his lips are moving he's lying. Respect must be earned and he will NEVER have mine.

Anyway, I think you are right. Nature will run it's course.

Another day has passed and we are one day closer to the truth. I am continually amazed at the number of new vote groups and election reform groups and investigating groups and number crunching groups and bush hating groups and war hating groups and truth loving groups that are being started especially since the November 2, 2004 election( Movie title Hell Part II.)There are so many groups out there I want to join and help but there are not enough hours in a day.It is very encouraging that we are ultimately going to achieve the same goal- bringing down this administration. The numbers tell it all and there is no hiding from it, it is there out in the open for all to see now we just have to get everyone to look.

That whoever Deep Throat is, that whatever spin MSM tries to put on that revelation, we can use the media attention to remind our fellow Americans that presidents have been corrupt and left office in disgrace... and that the sky did not fall because of it. I'm new here and I just have to say I'm so grateful for all of your voices. You strengthen my resolve and encourage my spirit. I know that we, the people, have the power to bring about change if we will just choose to exercise it. I can never forget these words, spoken by John Edwards:

"The America I love, the America you love, can, once again, be that bright, shining star, that beacon that stirs our hearts when we hear our anthem and we see our flag. We can make it so. We are better and stronger, you and I together locked hand in hand-- we are better and stronger than anything that stands between us and our destiny. We should never settle for less than our highest aspirations for our leaders and for our country because: We are America where everything is possible, everthing is possible, every single day."

176. Hi, AmBlue, and welcome to DU.
What a great place for your first post. And what a great quote to include.

We're not giving up, and we really do believe that good will triumph to ensure that the miracle that is the American experiment can only be derailed temporarily by the forces of greed, who see it not as an edifice to the essential good in people that manifests in a nation of freedom and compassion, but as a game to be won by rigging the system.

Thanks for being here!

:hi:

193.  I believe they're becoming weaker
not stronger. It only seems the opposite coming from the MSM. Right now they're trying to suck up to the "winner", but low rumblings of discontent from the "faithful" are starting to come out. If Democratic leaders can draw the line on blivet**'s social security rape, I think some republicans might not stand with him. I have hope we will prevail.

195. I am thinking more in terms of election reform. If we don't get something
done about e-voting by 2006, they will get more house and senate seats and then we will never get reform. We can't win an election unless we can do something about e-voting. It just seems so hopeless sometimes, with them controlling the media. Thank god for the internet.

210. Hi...... I'm glad I could cheer you
I was never active in politics before other than putting a bumper sticker on my car in the last month before a presidential election, but this time I felt a sense of urgency because of the catastrophy that is Bush & Co. I busted my butt, all year long, first for Edwards, then for Kerry, then MoveOn, ACT, even standing in front of my Target on the last day of voter registration to get people registered. I was a precinct leader for MoveOn and ran a group of 15 people out of my house starting at 5am, going on, well.... you know how long. We made 632 face-to-face, phone and flyer contacts that day. My husband and kids thought they had lost me forever. I can't tell you how many times my kids said to me, "Mommy, after the election, can we......(fill in the blank)??" The kids even started asking total strangers if they were voting for Kerry and cheering when they saw Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers. And, from what I saw and sensed, everywhere, I was so sure we would win.

Since November, I've been so sad, so depressed, so ashamed of my country. I let so many things go. But you know what? I'm so proud of what we all did. What we still will do. We just have to. You know, I was so moved by the Ukrainian people. But we Americans (in the collective sense) are so naive, so trusting, so lazy and spoiled. So disbelieving that our leaders could be such wretched thugs. We are a young country and not as wise as our European neighbors. Those that haven't had their eyes opened yet will-- one way or the other.

So, I'm in it for the long haul, and I'll be seeing you 'round.

183. We're all looking forward, here, taking progress where we see it,
but never thinking of less than restoring a true, lasting democracy, election upon election, as was the intent of the people who wrote our constitution, and all the anonymous believers who've fought for its fulfillment over the last two hundred twenty eight years and more.

Believe, and see it done.

Glad to see you here.

186. I Believe
"THIS I BELIEVE"
by Robert A. Heinlein

-------

"I believe in my fellow citizens. Our headlines are splashed with crime yet for every criminal there are 10,000 honest, decent, kindly men. If it were not so, no child would live to grow up. Business could not go on from day to day. Decency is not news. It is buried in the obituaries, but is a force stronger than crime. I believe in the patient gallentry of nurses and the tedious sacrifices of teachers. I believe in the unseen and unending fight against desperate odds that goes on quietly in almost every home in the land.

"And finally, I believe in my whole race. Yellow, white, black, red, brown. In the honesty, courage, intelligence, durability, and goodness of the overwhelming majority of my brothers and sisters everywhere on this planet. I am proud to be a human being. I believe that we have come this far by the skin of our teeth. That we always make it just by the skin of our teeth, but that we will always make it. Survive. Endure. I believe that this hairless embryo with the aching, oversize brain case and the opposable thumb, this animal barely up from the apes will endure. Will endure longer than his home planet -- will spread out to the stars and beyond, carrying with him his honesty and his insatiable curiosity, his unlimited courage and his noble essential decency.

"This I believe with all my heart."

Also from this text:

"You and I are free today because of endless unnamed heroes from Valley Forge to the Yalu River. I believe in -- I am proud to belong to -- the United States. Despite shortcomings from lynchings to bad faith in high places, our nation has had the most decent and kindly internal practices and foreign policies to be found anywhere in history."

Thank you, Pats.

200. I don't really know.
Where is the critical blow that brings down this dry-rotted skyscraper of greed?

What is the name of the little child whose voice will point out that the emporer is naked? Or whose tiny voice will lift the chorus of truth-tellers above the threshold where it can't be ignored?

What is the moment at which all the little guys who * have convinced that they have to be team players discover that all the sacrifices they've made for the good of the team are not going to pay dividends on the district level?

I don't know.

But I don't really need to.

Because I believe that it's all inevitable. And imminent.

P.S.: to all the innocent people living downstream of this dam built on no-bid contracts with cheap cement: please be ready.

And so I must thank our naysayer several posts up who tried to sneak in his/her naysaying in the middle of the thread for reminding me why it is important to keep saying--loudly--I BELIEVE, and for reminding me how great this I BELIEVE thread is, as are all of its true believers. I believe our resolve and perseverence will drown out the droning, miserable voice of negativity, and I believe we are more powerful and stronger for our belief.

I BELIEVE in John Kerry.

I BELIEVE in our DU warriors.

I BELIEVE in karma, and I believe the BushCons are amassing a towering debt that THEY WILL PAY.

It was Iraq and not N. Korea, because even blivet** in his heart of hearts (which is very small indeed) knows he doesn't have what it takes to confront a real problem, so he had to invent one he could win. Problem is, he can't even win the straw-man conflict he started because he was too pigheaded and effing stupid to seek out balanced advice about how to actually handle the situation. He's so sold on PR dictating reality that he thinks it's gonna work every time. Sorry, blivet**, the laws of physics don't work that way: Mr. Gravity always wins.
