Republican State Senator Calls for Election Investigation in Milwaukee
Report: D.A.'s rarely enforce law on voter-address cards

A provision of state law covering the confirmation cards that must be sent to verify addresses of newly registered voters is rarely used, diminishing an important safeguard against voter fraud, a newspaper reports.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Thursday that its review showed little use of the provision, which requires that any confirmation card that the U.S. Postal Service cannot deliver to the address on the card must be sent to the local district attorney for investigation.

In Milwaukee, more than 10,000 confirmation cards out of an estimated 84,000 voters who registered on election day last November could not be processed.

According to Milwaukee officials, the cards may be illegible, missing certain required information or duplicates of ones that had been filled out earlier. They said the number of undeliverable cards was about the same as for the November 2000 presidential election.

The Journal Sentinel said it has submitted an open records request seeking access to the Milwaukee cards, which officials say contain private information that must be blotted out before they can be released.

Citing the undeliverable cards, state Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, sent a letter Wednesday to Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann calling for an investigation into Milwaukee's election problems

1. We are for totally fair and honest elections.
By all means fix the cards. Fix EVERYTHING that needs fixing.

WE have nothing to hide.

2. Good. And while they're at it they should investigate the Fox Valley
My sister in law stood in line for almost two hours in Kaukauna and was finally sent to a different polling place--they said they ran out of ballots. She doesn't even know if her vote counted in the end. One of my students called me to say that she would be late for our night class--had been in line for almost three hours! I'll see her tomorrow nad ask her where she voted. This has never happened here. Let's investigate the entire state. The Repugs may not like the outcome.

For the record. Some of you may remember a woman who called in to C-Span on Jan. 6 dissing Dems for dirty tricks and even vandelism, the slashing of tires in Milwaukee. She went on to say that nothing was done about it. That was a flat out lie. The young kids who did that, who I think had some pretty prominent parents, were arrested and have been prosecuted. Haven't followed the outcome, but the caller clearly lied.

3. Rep. Gwen Moore, first black Representative from WI, her son
and one other I can't think of for the moment. And while there was an investigation, I don't think there were prosecutions. I could confirm.

I don't like this though. They'd better not try to "unblue" us or I will be mighty pissed. I worked quite hard to make us blue, and I'd like it if we stayed that way.

By all means, make things fair, but this better be a NONPARTISAN investigation. Problem is we just got Accenture (is that the name?) here to do our registration lists. And you know what THAT means.

Oh hell, I want to keep our Dem mayor and governor. They'd better not be trying to skew our voting process in favor of the Repubs.
