ACTION! LETTER OF THE WEEK #2: To Senators on Condoleeza Rice
New LETTER OF THE WEEK Forum

Some of us have started a LETTER OF THE WEEK feature here that will provide sample letters that you can use on one forum-selected topic per week--and contact information-- mostly aimed at helping Congress focus on our issues and talking points, also to support progressives in Congress who are taking brave stances against the BushCons, and to encourage others to join them. Barbara Boxer wrote that she had 40,000 letters backing her up in her tough interrogation of Condoleeza Rice this week. This inspired us to want to do more.

Join our forum discussions on topics and help write letters!

--------

Our first!

LETTER OF THE WEEK #1: The Media and the Protests (already posted)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x294547

This letter can still be used Friday and this weekend to encourage media reports on the protests, using MEDIA BLASTER (see below).

--------

LETTER OF THE WEEK #2: To Senators on Condoleeza Rice nomination

This second letter (below) is meant for Senators and must be sent differently. (Preferably fax; also email--see below.) It must go out this weekend. No time for snail mail. The full Senate debate will be Tues. and Wed. (9 hours total). It is a hard hitting letter opposing the nomination of Condoleeza Rice as Secretary of State, and supporting Boxer, Kerry and others in opposition. Boxer and Kerry were the only members of the Foreign Relations Committee to vote against Rice. Others like Biden voted for. And Feinstein will be introducing this bad appointment to the full Senate on Tuesday. Go figure.

Clearly the antiwar segment of the Democratic Party needs our support. But there is no reason not to send this letter—or your own—to all Senators, including Republicans. Remember that almost 60% of Americans oppose the Iraq War. We are the majority!

Feel free to change the letter any way you wish.

Senate and House contact info. (click on state, all Sen's & House, tel/fax/web site)

Senate and House direct send email:

Senate (has list of all; snail mail addresses; DC tel, and webform)

_______

Here are two background articles on the Rice nomination:

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050120/D87NRVAG0.html

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050117/pl_afp/usricepolitics_050117223654

Our third letter will be on the Gonzales nomination (which has been delayed for a week—our letter will be posted in a couple of days.) Other topics will include election fraud, investigation and reform, Social Security and the environment.

-------

Send Senate Letter to the media?

You might want to also send the letter to the hundreds of media email addresses available at MEDIA BLASTER. It's easy. Just cut and paste the four sets of media email addresses into your email program, cut and paste your letter, and SEND. Here's MEDIA BLASTER:

http://www.independentmediasource.com/voteintegrity2_12.htm

You will want to change the greeting from "Dear Senator…" to a title, for instance: "Sent to all United States Senators on January __, 2005." Put your name at the bottom and it's probably best to add at least town and state, and phone number (possible letter to the editor?).

-----------

LETTER OF THE WEEK #2

Dear Senator ____:

The war in Iraq is by far the worst and most disastrous mistake that the Bush regime has made, and Condoleeeza Rice, whom George Bush has nominated for Secretary of State, has been responsible for conveying the false justifications for this war to the American people and to the Congress.

We need a Secretary of State whose word we can trust, and who can be trusted by other countries. Condoleeza Rice does not meet that job description.

I oppose her appointment as Secretary of State, and I support the efforts of Senators Barbara Boxer and John Kerry to obtain answers from her on the matter of misleading America into war. I support their votes against her appointment, and I urge you to do the same in the full Senate.

Thousands of Americans have been killed and wounded, over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed and many have been imprisoned and tortured, in this war—a war based on falsehoods, and a war that also holds grave consequences for America's reputation as a just and conservative country for whom the use of a force is a last resort.

The administration is now stuck in a quagmire in Iraq, similar to the one in Vietnam in which over 50,000 US soldiers and over one million Vietnamese were killed—and now the regime is spoiling for war in additional countries.

Nearly 60% of the American people oppose the Bush Regime's war in Iraq. The American people cannot continue to pay for these reckless and bloody policies, and we can no longer tolerate war crimes being committed in our name.

Ms. Rice has also been less than candid about the failures of this administration to protect the U.S. from the 9/11 attack, and supports policies of completely unethical interference in the internal affairs of other countries, such as Haiti and Venezuela.

A regime that holds power on the tenuous grounds of massive vote suppression against minority voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, on the further tenuous grounds of a non-transparent election system that is controlled by partisans of the regime, and that currently has almost 60% of the American people opposing its war policy, would be well advised not to commit further arrogant acts against the consent of the governed, such as nominating for Secretary of State a person whose lies have resulted in countless unnecessary deaths.

Sincerely,

NAME
(a good idea to put here at least town and state, and phone)

1. Make sure you send it to YOUR Congresscritters...
They get upset (both sides) when you aren't in their district.

Of course, it is easier for US Senators.

7. good point, but
That's the reason you write to the Chair's of committees then CC everyone else you'd like on the committee. That's the proper protocol for working the halls of congress from the local level. Then you send a letter to your district Rep. with copy of letter sent to Chair to put him on notice and ask for his intervention in the matter.

Most don't know how Congress as a whole operates nor, most importantly, how to push the proper buttons to get action.

3. KICK! KICK! KICK! GOTTA KEEP THIS KICKED OVER THE WEEKEND!
VERY IMPORTANT!

Showdown on Tues., Wed., with NINE HOURS of speeches scheduled on Rice nomination. Dems will be throwing the gauntlet down, but they are split. Feinstein is introducing Rice! Unbelievable! Feinstein, warmonger!

Boxer, Kerry, Byrd, will all be active, challenging!

Who's going to walk away with the Party? Collusive Dems like Feinstein and Biden, or brave ones like Boxer?

4. For the Conyers Judiciary he's asked for help. Give it to him!
Send this:

You have to remember that you send these letters to both 'pugs and Dem's. Flood the opposition just a hard as your guys. That way you've created a paper trail that they can't deny and opens them up for losses in the elections.

The 4 members I suggest getting this letter are:
Hon. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr.
Hon. Henry J. Hyde
Hon. John Conyers, Jr.
Hon. Melvin L. Watt
addresses for all can be found here: http://judiciary.house.gov/CommitteeMembership.aspx

Letter below dotted line
-----
Dear Chairman Sensenbrenner,

I have recently learned about Representative John Conyers request to hold full committee hearings on the election results from the State of Ohio. I am writing to show my support and interest this matter. I am deeply interested in having the full committee investigate these issues:

Unusual Results in multiple counties
Over votes which are statistically impossible
Counting irregularities in multiple counties
Spoiled ballots
Provisional ballots not properly dealt with under the laws of the State of Ohio.
Anomalies with touch screen voting equipment

This is a short list of items I would like the committee to investigate.

Representative Sensenbrenner, I know you are as interested as I in resolving these issues for the good of our election system and the full confidence of the American people in our franchise. It is our mutual appreciation of our representative democracy that I make this request and I am sure that you will do all that is in your power as Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary to see this matter through to its proper conclusion.

Respectfully,
(sign name)
Citizen of the State of (insert State) in these United State of America

CC: (insert other HR members that you've CC'd)

9. Thanks, darkworkz! I will do it, too.
As you know Conyers work is on our list for a LETTER OF THE WEEK probably the week after next, to include election fraud, investigation and reform.

Any help you can give on this letter would be great. If you want ot start a draft, that would be wonderful. It would be going to Senators and Reps (and media).

And any clue as to legislative or investigative time frames? He seems to be at work on something right now. There is another forum (front page list, currently) about his requesting us to send out his letters in a media blast. It seems someone is taking care of it.

You know the forum (I think you started it!):

10. Time frames and other data
First, time frames:

No clue. Only thing I know is Conyers is rapidly moving the ball toward full Judiciary Committee hearings ASAP. Sensenbrenner controls this. That's why in my letter I say hit Sensenbrenner hard, real hard. Make him wade through a sea of letters and you'll guarantee Conyers gets ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he wants from the Chairman. Because the Chairman will be frightened by the volume of and content of what his office receives.

I can't stress enough that the Conyers issues is the most critical of all. This is the weakest point in the entire * machine right now. If DU and a few blogs apply maximum pressure at that point and pin Sensenbrenner down, you'll get the entire system. Period!

Onto the letter issue:

In my original proposal I mentioned keeping the message simple and direct. Hit your target with simple talking points (or whatever you care to name them) and then end the letter.

If you take a look at what I've presented, you'll see an example of what I was describing.

Letter breakdown:

The opening sets up the reader. The middle is the talking points. The conclusion speaks of togetherness in the cause of our country that neither side can deny. The salutation takes into account the geography of the country and allows you to put your location down in a way the informs the reader that you understand the nature of the relationship between D.C. and your state. Thus putting them on notice that you're fully awake to what's going on and your inalienable rights as a State Citizen and Citizen in the U.S.

Simple yet extremely powerful.

22. Great Idea! And a Suggestion?
I love this idea! Last night, I was reading the thread where this all began, and am so very glad to see this idea blossoming and growing so fast. Awesome. The energy here is fantastic, and I will be participating.

My suggestion revolves around wondering if there is some way you guys could request the powers-that-be here at DU to give you a special place where all of this could be consolidated and found easily by those of us who are looking for it. Would that be possible? I'm just worried about trying to find these threads amidst all else here in "2004 Election and Results," and the necessity of having to constantly kick these posts because things sink so fast here. Could this material maybe be cross-posted here--or at least links placed here--so that people new to the idea might come upon it in their travels here, and then in an area reserved just for this, so that these great letters and discussions can be located easily by those of us who are already aware of it?

Just wondering... I don't want to miss any of these threads, and am afraid I might if I can't locate them easily.

If that's not possible, is there an easy way I can search for these threads each week? Maybe there could be something that goes into the subject line of each new thread--like a keyword, or a string of keywords--that we could search for?

Thanks for all you are doing!

I have a thread over in Activism for this and have been trying to direct people over there.

It's going to be a slow process but we should leave this thread here since the hearings are coming up on Tues/Wed.

After that, we can start moving activist threads over to the Activism forum and kicking major ass from that vantage point!

W00t for Peace Patriot for keeping this in the limelight. We can't forget old Rice and her murderous ways.

36. Keep kicked through early week! Showdown Tues/Wed. Kick! For those...
...who think this letter is not relevant to election fraud, see final para. of the letter on Rice:

"A regime that holds power on the tenuous grounds of massive vote suppression against minority voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, on the further tenuous grounds of a non-transparent election system that is controlled by partisans of the regime, and that currently has almost 60% of the American people opposing its war policy, would be well advised not to commit further arrogant acts against the consent of the governed, such as nominating for Secretary of State a person whose lies have resulted in countless unnecessary deaths."

Boxer, hero of Jan. 6, asked for our support on this!

BushCons would not be doing crap like this if they didn't know that they don't need to worry about "consent of the governed." They own the election system.

Illegitimate government. No mandate. And still they persist with extremist policies. Need to point that out constantly--especially when an election reform advocate asks for our help.

39. Slight revisions of the letter for Senators on Condoleeza Rice:
I've made the following revisions to the letter I'm sending out. The most important is adding the following as the second sentence in the second paragraph: "We furthermore need a Secretary of State who is committed to world peace."

-----

Subject line for emails: "Bush has no mandate for war! Oppose Condoleeza Rice!"

-----

Dear _____:

The war in Iraq is by far the worst and most disastrous mistake that the Bush regime has made, and Condoleeeza Rice, whom George Bush has nominated for Secretary of State, has been responsible for conveying the false justifications for this war to the American people and to the Congress.

We need a Secretary of State whose word we can trust, and who can be trusted by other countries. We furthermore need a Secretary of State who is committed to world peace.

Thousands of Americans have been killed and wounded, and over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed, and many have been imprisoned and tortured—in a war based on falsehoods, and a war that also holds grave consequences for America's reputation as a just and conservative country for whom the use of a force is a last resort.

In addition to the outrage of Iraq—a war that is hauntingly similar to the Vietnam quagmire in which millions were killed—the regime is now spoiling for war in additional countries.

A regime that holds power on the tenuous grounds of massive vote suppression against minority voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act, on the further tenuous grounds of a non-transparent election system that is controlled by partisans of the regime, and that has a majority of Americans opposing its war policy, would be well advised not to commit further arrogant acts against the consent of the governed, such as nominating for Secretary of State a person whose lies have resulted in countless unnecessary deaths.

Sincerely,

47. Thank you, JoMama! And everybody sending faxes & emails!
For those who don't like sending faxes or emails, maybe you could get on the phones tomorrow and call some Senate offices. Sometime tonight I'll post all the Senate Dem contact info (DC fax nos, home office fax nos. if DC is jambed, email and DC and home office tel. nos.), or as many as I can, and Republicans if I have time.

I'm including in my letters strong statements about the sit down and shut up attitude of some Dem leaders, reminding them that they DO represent the majority of Americans, and urging them to attack BushCon companies' control of our election system.

The two things are very related--how they're getting shoved around, and the fraudulent election. They have got to wake up to this and stand up for what they know is right!

53. A letter for Democrats who are waffling...
(I worked up this new angle on writing to Democratic Senators, while writing to Sen. Clinton. Those who support Condoleeza Rice and the Iraq War are way out of the mainstream--and why is that mainstream so out of line with Bush policy, do you suppose? Anyway, here it is.)

-----
Subject line or title: Bush has no mandate for war! Oppose Condoleeza Rice!

Dear Senator Clinton:

I have been a loyal Democratic Party voter and supporter for 44 years, despite bitter disappointments and tragedies such as the Vietnam War, NAFTA, and the current sit down and shut up attitude of some Democratic leaders.

So I hope you will take this to heart from one Democrat to another.

Nearly 60% of the American people oppose the Bush regime's war in Iraq--of which Condoleeza Rice has been the chief spokesperson--and that figure is probably 70% to 80%, if not more, among Democrats.

The American people cannot continue to pay for these reckless and bloody policies, and we can no longer tolerate war crimes being committed in our name.

The war in Iraq is by far the worst and most disastrous mistake that the Bush regime has made, and Condoleeza Rice, whom George Bush has nominated for Secretary of State, has been responsible for conveying the false justifications for this war to the American people and to the Congress.

We need a Secretary of State whose word we can trust, and who can be trusted by other countries. We furthermore need a Secretary of State who is committed to world peace.

Thousands of Americans have been killed and wounded, and over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed, and many have been imprisoned and tortured—in a war based on falsehoods, and a war that also holds grave consequences for America's reputation as a just and conservative country for whom the use of a force is a last resort.

In addition to the outrage of Iraq—a war that is hauntingly similar to Vietnam—the Bush regime is now spoiling for war in additional countries.

Ms. Rice has also been less than candid about the failures of this administration to protect the U.S. from the 9/11 attack, and supports policies of completely unethical interference in the internal affairs of other countries, such as Haiti and Venezuela.

A regime that holds power on the tenuous grounds of massive vote suppression against minority voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act, on the further tenuous grounds of a non-transparent election system that is controlled by partisans of the regime, and that has a majority of Americans opposing its war policy, would be well advised not to commit further arrogant acts such as nominating for Secretary of State a person whose lies have resulted in countless unnecessary deaths.

We lack a government that has the "consent of the governed." And I believe we have to break the control of BushCon companies over our election system, because that's the source of the problem.

The Democratic Party is the only party, of the two major parties. that the majority of Americans who oppose Bush war policy can turn to for leadership. You are in a position to exercise leadership on these matters to turn the country back from this perilous course. I urge you to do so.

Yours sincerely,

"And if you need to learn how to stand up and be courageous, may I suggest booking some time with Senator Boxer?"

Sorry. My bitterness was showing for a moment there.

56. Here are some TALKING POINTS
TALKING POINTS ON CONDOLEEZA RICE & ELECTION FRAUD (no mandate!)

Bush has no mandate for war! Democrats opposed to Condoleeza Rice are in the mainstream! Senate fireworks Tues/Wed!

I and many others are flooding the Senate with letters, faxes and emails opposing Bush’s nomination of Condoleeza Rice as Secretary of State. Here’s why:

• The war in Iraq is by far the worst and most disastrous mistake that the Bush regime has made, and Condoleeza Rice, whom George Bush has nominated for Secretary of State, has been responsible for conveying the false justifications for this war to the American people and to the Congress.

• We need a Secretary of State whose word we can trust, and who can be trusted by other countries. We furthermore need a Secretary of State who is committed to world peace. Condoleeza Rice does not meet that job description.

• Nearly 60% of the American people oppose the Bush regime's war in Iraq--of which Condoleeza Rice has been the chief spokesperson--and that figure is probably 70% to 80%, or more, among Democrats (a consideration for Democratic Senators).

• The American people cannot continue to pay for these reckless and bloody policies, and we can no longer tolerate war crimes being committed in our name.

• Condoleeza Rice never answered Senator Boxer’s and Senator Kerry’s questions on the matter of misleading America into war. More questions will be asked this Tuesday/Wednesday--the Democrats have scheduled 9 hours of debate on this matter.

• Thousands of Americans have been killed and wounded, and over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed, and many have been imprisoned and tortured—in a war based on falsehoods.

• The Iraq war also holds grave consequences for America's reputation as a just and conservative country for whom the use of a force is a last resort.

• In addition to the outrage of Iraq—a war that is hauntingly similar to Vietnam—the Bush regime is now spoiling for war in additional countries.

• A regime that holds power on the tenuous grounds of massive vote suppression against minority voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act, on the further tenuous grounds of a non-transparent election system that is controlled by partisans of the regime, and that has a majority of Americans opposing its war policy, would be well advised not to commit further arrogant acts such as nominating for Secretary of State a person whose lies have resulted in countless unnecessary deaths.

• Ms. Rice has also been less than candid about the failures of this administration to protect the U.S. from the 9/11 attack, and supports policies of completely unethical interference in the internal affairs of other countries, such as Haiti and Venezuela.

• The U.S. lacks a government that has the "consent of the governed." We should look to Bush donors’ control over our election system for the reason why.

• We are asking the Democrats in Congress, and any Republicans with a conscience, to show courage and leadership on this matter, and help to turn the country back from this perilous course.

57. Thanks for posting this Peace Patriot. My email to my Republican Light
Senators was not quite as diplomatic.

I feel they are fully aware of Rice's "shortcomings" and I cut to the chase.

Dear Senator Schumer:

I respectfully request that you vote against the confirmation of Dr. Rice as Secretary of State.

As you see, I listed as the topic International Criminal Court.. this is apropos.

As you know, the Secretary of State is 4th in line for the Presidency. Do you want a known liar in that position? Someone who lied through her teeth in the run-up to the war in Iraq, who continues to lie about it. Someone who supports torture? If she has no credibility with the American people she will surely have none with her International counterparts.

She should be tried for war crimes and treason against the people of our country. Instead she is going to be rewarded for her deeds by becoming Secretary of State.

If you vote to confirm her, you are supporting those lies.

Thanking you in advance,
Sincerely,

I suppose it's little use to put it to these people that they bloody well stole the election, they have NO MANDATE, they've killed over 100,000 innocent people in a war that is hated by most Americans, and that the Cabal they worship and who leaks a pissy little drop of power on their heads are liars, thieves and mass murderers, and are looting the federal government. Do they dare think for themselves any more? What happened to Republican independence and individualism? They mouth all the same talking points, they move in a herd. And that is what they will LIKELY do on Wed. when they vote. But on the off chance that a couple of them might still have a little Barry Goldwater or Clint Eastwood (the myth) in them--drop a letter of them and see what happens!

Can't hurt. Add to their worries about brittle power.

60. It's important to email repubs - Some may just need a push
to defect. Remember, not every repub wants to march with *. Some may be looking for a way to get out of having to vote for Rice.

Fax them all. Hopefully we can sway the moderates!

There may well be some minds not yet made up, and votes that might change. One of these days, some combo of rising Dems and fed up Republicans is going to strike back. You can smell the arrogance and hubris of the BushCon fascists all the way out here in CA.

Keep the list handy tomorrow for phone calls and emails!

74. Focus is essential now!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x304342

This is about election reform. This is about accountability. This is about consent. This is about immediate issues and those coming on our horizon.

Today the Republicans had yet another chance to stand and place their positions before the public. And the points they raised fell well short of the mark of reasoned, rational debate.

The talking points "issued" to those Republican speakers spoke of:

Follow the leader
Don't ask questions
Might makes right
Move on
Because I said so

You may notice the more they are exposed to speaking and publicly supporting their positions the more overt and troubling their "language" becomes.

The simple focus now is reasserting the "consent of the governed" in national politics.

Don't forget.
