Follow the money, find the truth: More voting machine company connections
This thread was posted by Milky Way back on Dec. 1, and only got a few hits. I think it is very important, so am going to post the info again with a different title.
Here is Milky Way's original post:

It seems that, almost without exception, the voting machine business is operated by companies with strong ties to the republican party, military contractors, hard right wingers, and fundamentalists.

Lynn Landes' web site has an excellent overview of voting machine companies, and I'll add a few bits of information to hers.
http://www.ecotalk.org/VotingMachineCompanies.htm#Other

The largest company, ES&S, was known as American Information Systems (AIS) before 1999. It was founded in 1980 by two brothers, Bob and Todd Urosevich. AIS was largely funded with money from the very wealthy Ahmanson family of California, who also have helped finance The Chalcedon Institute, a dominionist organization that wants to see a return to Biblical Law. Todd Urosevich is still with ES&S, while Bob is currently the President of Diebold. Here's a previous post I made about ES&S with some further info:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Many people know about Diebold and ES&S, yet even less prominent companies have these same kinds of connections to the right wing. For instance, Danaher Guardian is run by Steven and Mitchell Rales, who each are worth more than a billion dollars. It was a Danaher Guardian machine that "mistakenly" gave george bush a few thousand extra votes in Franklin County, Ohio (why do these computer glitches always bear right?).

A newsmeat.com search of campaign contributions finds that the Rales have given generously to republican politicians.
http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?st=DC&la...

They also have given very generously to an organization called Ameripac. When we visit Ameripac's web site, we are greeted with the smiling faces of tom delay, george w. bush, and bill frist. Also on the front page is a bizarre (and obviously old) headline: "Kerry, The Communist Party's choice, must repudiate endorsement, says AMERIPAC." The press release concludes, “We call on John Kerry to repudiate the Communist Party USA, and walk away from its endorsement,” Gottlieb concluded. “Otherwise, Americans will know that John Kerry’s vision of America has a hammer and sickle waving somewhere over the landscape.”

Also on this sparse web site is a link to "Past Efforts." You would expect to find out about Ameripac's past support for republican politicians. But instead, we're greeted by three photos: Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, and Tom Daschle.

Well, what a fine organization the Rales brothers have helped fund--it's a rightwing smear machine! (Thankfully, the commie John Kerry was defeated--or at least that's what the voting machines told us.)

http://www.ameripac.org /

Another company, Triad GSI of Xenia, Ohio, run by the Rapp family, counts many of the votes in Ohio, including Warren County, which was mysteriously placed under lockdown while the vote counting was done. The father, Tod Rapp, originally wrote the program that counts the votes. He also was a financial supporter of the bush campaign.
http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?city=Xen...

There is certainly nothing wrong with donating to political campaigns, even those of republicans, but why do all vote-counting companies seem to be tied to the republican party? And as shown on Lynn Landes' site, many have strong ties to military contractors. Why are military contractors so interested in getting into the vote-counting business? Why not try some other line of business, like manufacturing espresso makers?

In 1988, Ronnie Dugger wrote a landmark article about electronic voting for The New Yorker.
http://www.govsux.com/annals_of_democracy.htm

In the article, he said this about fixing elections:

But who on Earth would do such a thing? In Chicago in 1982, 58 Democratic party bosses were convicted of fraud after they were caught stuffing not the ballot box, but the computer. They had punched out fraudulent cards for falsely registered and nonexistent voters, then run them through the card-reader.

There have been numerous other ambiguous cases. Many of them have involved Berkeley's Computer Election Service (CES)-which recently changed its name to Business Records Corporation Election Service. The company is the dominant force In the American election industry; an estimated 33 to 40 percent of all American votes are cast on and counted by CES systems. CES uses aversion of the punch-card voting system prevalent in California.

In 1985, the National Security Agency (NSA)-the government's most expansive and most secretive intelligence service-took an interest in CES. According to the New York Times, NSA was following a directive from then-President Reagan to improve the security of major non-military computer systems.

Government officials were queasy at the prospect of a top-secret military spy agency-particularly NSA, whose domain is high-tech intelligence gathering-delving into the nation's electoral process. According to the Times, an official of the government's General Accounting Office told a Senate committee that NSA's involvement with CES "raises basic questions concerning the extent to which the defense establishment should be involved in policy formulation within the government's civilian agencies."

Geez, that's enough to make your hair stand on end!

BTW, the company mentioned in the Dugger article, CES, was founded in 1984 by Jack Gerbel. CES went on to have several run-ins with the law. Jack Gerbel is now president of Unilect Corporation, whose machines are used in Carteret County, North Carolina, where 4,500 votes were permanently lost.

26. Very true
and it is funny how it's always the repulicans. Why not democrats? I thought the republicans were Christian moral value types, eh? :eyes: Does Mr. Conyers, Arenbeck and Cobb have this info? I'm sure it could be useful if they don't. I also think it's silly of that one guy who wants to go back to Biblical Law. I guess he likes stoning's and all that. At my church this morning we were talking about various things in the class I go to and I came across Romans 6. In that chapter it talks about Christians and the law and how you're supposed to uphold it and the law is holy. Also in Romans 5 it talks about how you're supposed to honor people and governor's and kings (now days President's in some cases). So this guy must be an old testament bumper. Christians follow the New Testament and the Old Testament is seen mostly for history purposes. When Christ came he had the promise of the new laws and when he died the convienet was made hence why Christians are supposed to follow the New Testament. Sorry for this ramble but that guy pissed me off talking about Biblical Law and stuff.

3. Did you change the link to this one on the daily thread where you posted?
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 05:50 PM by Amaryllis
Referring to what you said in Land SHark's thread where you said you added this to the daily thread-I edited and changed the link to this thread after I posted it in Land Shark's thread. I hope that wasn't confusing! I first just posted Milky Way's original thread, then I realized it was no longer an active thread, and thought it deserved to be kicked because it's such important info.

So I started this new thread and gave it a new title and credited Milky Way.

BTW, what is the daily thread?

17. Good stuff! Here's Hart.
The fourth largest voting machine company, Hart InterCivic, is based in Austin, counts their votes, plus Houston, Ft. Worth, Alexandria VA, and some other places in CA, WA, CO. Bear in mind that counting Texas is no small gig -- Texas has the second largest basket of electoral votes in the nation.

Hart used to be family-run business that did a lot of printing jobs for the state of Texas, including election stuff.

Then, oddly enough, before the 2000 election, Hart got 4 rounds of venture capital funding from the outside, $40 million, that ramped its operation up to become one of the country's major voting machine companies.

One of the funders was none other than long-time Bush crony and Dallas billionaire Tom Hicks, who helped build Clear Channel into a mega radio monopoly. Hicks bought the Texas Rangers baseball team, a transaction where Bush put in about half a million in borrowed money and came away with $14 million. Hicks also got appointed by then-Governor Bush to UTIMCO, a fund that manages billions of dollars in Texas state money -- he managed it alright -- managed to send boatloads of bucks to Hicks and Bush cronies for private placement investments, under cover of um, trade secrecy -- couldn't divulge where the money was invested, he said, it was a trade secret. Does THAT sound familiar?

Anyway, Hart InterCivic has kept a much lower profile than the others, and hasn't said such stupid stuff like Walden O'Dell of Diebold, but be aware of who one of its owners is.

28. And it's no surprising
they're from Texas. Maybe they rigged the governor's race? Because from my understanding Ann Richards was a very popular politician back in those days. Of course the smear campaign didn't help either. But I wonder if that was the testing waters. Anybody know if they used machines back then in elections??

19. Great idea to kick this thread and to ensure that more Americans
are made aware of the huge potential for election fraud (I got it right Faye!!). I know I have thought that since the 2000 debacle, most citizens have sought out info on the way we elect our officials and are now aware of how the counting of our votes is controlled by partisans. But this sadly is not true and we must remind ourselves that we are in the minority and take every opportunity to spread the word. We are like an underground railroad of information that we must spread to the mainstream.

20. Yes, we are the media, as the saying goes. The fact that Dean is aware of
fraud I hope will help in spreading the word; I don't expect he can shout it from the rooftops but I am really hoping that he can work with the dem leadership to get them aware, and work thru the grassroots orgs to help spread the word.

29. unverifiable and funded by the radical Christian right.
How George W. Bush Won
the 2004 Presidential Election

Purging voter lists is just the beginning: the U.S. has embraced a form of electronic voting that is unreliable, unverifiable and funded by the radical Christian right.

ES&S, Diebold and Sequoia may not be household names like Enron or Arthur Andersen, but these three companies will decide America's next president. In the 2004 presidential election, the full effect of electronic voting will be felt for the first time and these are the companies that will report the majority of the results.

Despite assurances from the corporations that own these machines, the reliability of electronic voting is under intense criticism. One of the most comprehensive examinations of electronic voting fraud came from brothers James and Kenneth Collier. In their 1992 book Votescam: The Stealing of America, the brothers detailed the long history of voting fraud over the past twenty-five years with a special focus on voting machines. American politicians and large media outlets have ignored their book, and their charges remain unanswered.

Now, their concerns are being echoed by a new group of writers, journalists and activists who have raised alarming and explosive details about electronic voting in America. While academics such as Professors Rebecca Mercuri and David Dill and organizations like the Association for Computing Machinery have carefully documented how voting systems are vulnerable to fraudulent manipulation, journalists Lynn Landes, Jerry Bowles and Bev Harris are alerting Americans to an electronic coup d'etat in the making. If their charges are true, and there is little evidence to contradict their claims, George W. Bush has already won the 2004 election.
