7. Let's get serious about petitions

We went this route with several after 2000 If you are going to do this very important act, then all DU should be contacted, all MoveOn, all everything for one single poll. They didn't respect the war protests etc.
127 Signatories gives them a chuckle and then come the phony signatures and razzing freeopers posting comments.

I fear nothing personally but this exercise- that so far only offers them a cross referencing file of people who sign- seems very counter productive, even ridiculous, in perfect inversion to the truth and challenge of the message itself.

A peititon should come from a coalition and a wider public advertisement.

These snowballs in hell melt too damn fast.

With the thought that a petition should come from an organization, I suggested earlier today on the BBV boards that they start a petition...

We, the undersigned, do hereby petition the Government of the United States of America, with the assistance of non-partison independent oversight, to thoroughly and accurately investigate all voting irregularities, alleged fraud, intimidation, disenfranchisement and criminal acts against voters in the November, 2004 nationwide election, in all states where such activity has been alleged, reported and/or discovered.

We petition for these investigations to start immediately; that the proper authority issue an order that any and all public and private records pertaining to the 2004 election be made readily available, as per the Freedom of Information Act, and shall not be locked away and/or destroyed for any reason whatsoever by any official agency, their employees or any third party associated with such, including private companies such as Diebold and other companies who distribute and provide technical support for voting equipment.

We suggest an independent committee carry out such investigation, with the assistance of non-partisan independent oversight, in a thorough and timely fashion so as to find out exactly what improper actions were committed, whether of criminal intent or otherwise, and so as to take proper actions to ensure such events cannot and will not continue in the future.

In the event it is determined that criminal actions had been committed, we further petition the Government of the United States of America to press charges against any and all such persons responsible. If criminal charges are brought against anyone, whether in the private sector or within the Government itself, including high-ranking public officials, we demand federal law be enforced and all connected officials, regardless of position, be prosecuted to the furthest extent of the law.

When you are ready to deliver the petition, you can write to the petition online people and have them remove bogus entrys (such as the people signing with bogus names and comments in the address field like "kerry sucks").

I wrote to the author and suggested they move the petition to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/ -- it doesn't allow lame-ass comments and even if someone uses the address field for stupid comments, addresses are hidden to the public.

I've suggested to some of my family that people sign, and one of them told me they won't because of all the stupid comments and bogus names. I'm sure others feel the same.

If its all good, then why when I throw up a hypothetical like postering to you do you deride it? (which by the way was only in my mind because I saw it here on DU) I've never postered before, but it sounds like alot of fun and good stress relief. I really don't care about the public beauty aspect in this case since not one candidate in my area has sent anyone to clean their signs off every flat surface in the town yet. At least I would limit my postering to stuff my prop taxes pay for. They sure didn't.

Most of the stuff I'm actually doing you cant help me with because they consist of things like cutting off my cable, reducing debt, switching my vacation from a red state to a blue state, switching insurance companies and in some cases reducing coverage which increases my financial risk in daily life, but strikes(in my case) a 30% blow in earnings on a few companies in some areas where lets face it, every major provider is a repuke supporter, stuff like that. The Project Mayhem reference is regarding the fact that when you find yourself a part of something you despise, you can fight it from the inside or outside.........OR BOTH. Thats my plan. Even as I quietly fade out of their economy I'll be taking potshots at the corporate side of it. If every dem did what I am doing just on the financial front, I guarantee you the damage would be felt and felt good by the people who we most need to communicate with: the monied elite.

It is not calling for fair elections it is calling for an investigation.
Repugs were in charge when there was a call to investigate 9/11. Also there is an investigation into Iraq. They didn't want either of these and we still got them. Also it made news and got some truth out. Now you may say those were whitewashes but I think having an investigation into the vote would be a good thing. Why not. Some good will come from it.
