This is the link to our discussion about a mission statement for a new KO Group. Please check it out if you have a chance and let us know what you think -- all opinions are welcome.

I'm here early tonight because I wanted to make sure to have this link visible to the "usual suspects" as well as to our lurkers and celebrity guests: Hi, KO and Steph! :loveya: :loveya:

154. A Bob Hope song...
In 1945, as World War II drew to a close, Perry Como burst on the popular music scene with three records that each sold a million copies. One was a wartime novelty song based on a phrase that comedian Bob Hope had made popular — A Hubba-Hubba-Hubba.

265. Don't ask me why...
... but the phrase in question was, "From way downtown... BANG!" (pg 10, "The Big Show").
Except for the concluding word, this phrase seems entirely incongruous! (Sports fans, help me out here.)

The young lady was -- appropriately, IMO -- left unidentified. And I made a small mistake; in the account, she is referred to as a date, not a gf.

Since it's safely gone, I can ask you if you ever heard that satirical
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 09:37 PM by Nothing Without Hope
recording in which a man putting on a terrific Boston Mayor Thomas Menino accent goes through a skit that is supposed to be hizzonner giving a speech while passing a kidney stone. He already talks like he's got a mouthful of gravel, and with the squeals and Meninoesque jabbers and carrying on while the stone was supposed to be making its way out, it was one of the funniest things I've ever heard -- since I've had to listen to him, I could truly appreciate the artistry of the performance. It was in one of the Doctor Demento collections, I believe.

Much easier to laugh about a kidney stone once it's -- ah-- passed.

Sounds like you had a good time at your friend's dinner theater performance. That does sound like a delightful combination of enjoyable things to do.

If you need to know ... so get on w/ the KOEB show!

a candidate for the KOEB Haiku and Near-Haiku Hall of Fame, which we should institute if we don't already have one.

269. Sure, I think a KOEB Anthology Thread would be a great addition
when we set up our Group. It would be sort of like a combination of a museum and an orientation center for new visitors. They could stop off there and pick up their KOEB mugs and floaty heart balloons for their kids and then, armed with the back story and in-jokes, jump into the next KOEB meeting fully prepared and armed for bear -or Keef! ;)

I hope you're still up for a good reason! Your snarkalator is in good working condition, that's for sure! That's a good one:
...loaded for bear -- or Keef!
...or Keith's bare arms!

Brings to mind Botany's most recent poetic near-Haiku effort. Poor Keef!

Time for me to finally knock off for the night and see if any good dreams have time to visit in what little of the night is left. Good night -- or really, good dawn!

276. Maybe between us some of them have been bookmarked
All the KOEB meeting threads are archived, and clever search parameters can turn up surprisingly specific hits. For example, if we wanted to document the origin of the "wooly bear caterpillar" description of Keef's eyebrows, that would surely be findable.

I bookmarked the side thread in which I introduced "blivet**" as the perfect descriptor for the Dim Son; blivet** was basically pioneered by the KOEB and is now seen fairly often around DU.

I recall the evening, just after the masterstroke of The Tie, when I decided that we needed an official toast: "To The Ties That Bind." I think I bookmarked both those threads, they were so great. Several of us remarked that the "Tie One On" thread, when Keef wore his birthday tie, was the best one ever. It was also one of the longest.

Maybe Botany has saved some of his poetry. I think I may have bookmarked some of our "expert advice to the lovelorn" about how he should proceed in his Stephanie Miller Acquisition Project. And also some of the threads describing how Stephanie responded to his attentions on her radio show. It was pretty amazing finding the KOEB was in effect On The Air and even sorta famous--or at least infamous! We all laughed over that one til we hurt.

Yeah, lots of great moments and some very funny stuff, much more of it. Maybe some of the others bookmarked their favorites. When we start our Group we can set up a KOEB Anthology thread as you suggest -- it's a great idea. (Maybe you'd like to be our Museum Director & Archivist?) As I've said many times, keeping our spirits up is serious business. Again, that Mark Twain quote:

Irreverence is the champion of liberty and its only sure defense.

Not able to work, no health insurance, quite possibly a high-fatality cancer, the weakness brought by illness -- he must be feeling uttlerly helpless. Here's the link to Andy's own thread from yesterday; you might want to read it in addition to Will's thread.

268. Yes, that's it. The quality of their bags is said to be superb
And that tag is, of course, not to be missed. It's not on ALL their products, by the way; this page of their site gives the full story and tells which products have the tag:
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/CTGY/CARELABEL

The site claims that the tag began as an inside joke among the seamstresses and referred to the president of the COMPANY. Sure it did (love this tongue-in-cheek story), and this must also explain the great popularity of products with the label:
The inside label carries instructions on washing and caring for the bags. Because the bags are sold in Canada, the instructions are also printed in French. The French version, however, contains an additional phrase: "NOUS SOMMES DESOLES QUE NOTRE PRESIDENT SOIT UN IDIOT. NOUS N'AVONS PAS VOTE POUR LUI."

Translated to English, the phrase reads, "We are sorry that our President is an idiot. We did not vote for him."

The care label page link above links to a page (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/_all/TB1112) with the T-shirt, which I would think would be a good addition to the gear of an American visiting Paris. The front ot the T shirt has a blow-up of the notorious care label:

Who could resist? Especially when the profits go to such a good cause? The explanation on the T shirt page goes on to say
The t-shirt is back in-stock.
We've had such a response to the care label, or "Treason Tag," that we just had to put it on a t-shirt. All profits go to the Seattle Vet Center. So far, we have raised $16,000, thanks to you.

Though originally intended as a poke-in-the-ribs at Tom Bihn himself, everyone seems to have a "president" that they think is an idiot. Take your pick: Jacques Chirac, Bill Clinton, George Bush.

things he states as policies. The first-name, nickname thing is both his way of showing how he's the top dog of the inner circle and his attempt at trying to look like a bosom pal of the world's most powerful men. Either no one has bothered to explain to him that this is a really bad idea, or else he has ignored their advice. Sort of a parallel to how he STILL, after all this time and all the ridicule, says "NOO-KYOO-LER." (Presumably he still says "ABOO-GRAPE" too, or would if he gave enough of a damn about what happened in that torture hole to speak of it at all.) Guess he feels that since it's HIS finger on the button, who are WE to tell him he's wrong?

Are you feeling better?

I can't believe this Ganguck guy actually spoke to Campbell Brown.

"James Guckert, it's not so hard to pronounce" -- Campbell Brown.

So, he used his driver's license to get into the WH. And then McClellan knew he was using a pseudonym. Otay.

Yet, Maureen Dowd couldn't get in... :grr:

ever since Nancy Grace's new program premiered in primetime opposite KO on CNN Headline News, they've been battling it out for third (behind Fox and CNN--Paula Zahn). KO lost the fight last night although his overall ratings remain consistent and he is still doing better than Grace in pulling in the key demo numbers.

... he's gonna have to stop smoking.

No woman with any sense is going to marry a man who's voluntarily endangering his own health (and livelihood, since his voice is his fortune) -- not to mention her own health and that of any children they bring into the world.

:scared:

He's doubtless scratched some promising names off his OWN list all unknowingly, Rev, by stubbornly holding on to this dangerous habit.

... from the vast number of links to his writing, to the extensive photo gallery. I had been feverishly trying to collect all this stuff myself thru Google searches -- and here it is, finally, all in one place.

You can get to the site just by typing O into your browser -- how cool is THAT!!!

Kudos to the site's creator(s) -- a very professional job, indeed!

P.S. I hope copies of all columns/articles have been saved, in case the webpages on which they appear are taken down at some future time.

175. Ok, how much did that woman remind any of you of the lady in
Michael Moore's first movie 'Roger and Me', the one with the rabbits who has the sign that says 'pets or meat'? Am I wrong? Isn't it the same woman?

I hope they really didn't kill 'Wild Thing'. The turkey in those videos was so funny, and obviously on steroids. Ask Canseco.

181. Hi, everyone
I made it for a little bit after all. I just got home from a town hall on Social Security with our rep, Sandy Levin and thought I'd check in for at least a few minutes.

How do you all like my new look with my new avatar (now that I'm a star I can do my own)!

:hi:

211. Hi Fly
Take any .jpeg image and resize it to 48x48 pixels. Go into your options setting and follow the instructions for uploading your own avatar.

214. I took the file I originally had into Photoshop
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 09:36 PM by SharonRB
Then I sized it to 48x48 pixels and saved it for Web as a jpg (a gif is okay, too). Then I went to update my profile, update my avatar, and the instructions are included there. You click on the link to upload your own avatar, browse on your computer and then they tell you what to enter in the box. It's something like personal/15545.jpg or gif, depending on what kind of file it is. Without having it in front of me, I can't remember it exactly. Once I figured it out, it wasn't that hard.

Edit: Oh, yeah, the maximum file size is 3k.

251. Hi ladies!
Just sticking my head in the thread to say :hi: everyone!

And now I'm off to enjoy the rerun from the comfort of my bedroom. I'm totally wiped, I hit my rep's meeting on Social Security this morning, worked all day, and then hit the LWV meeting on the Texas budget. Phew!

262. Keith has a funny Ohio story almost every night...
... and tonight there were TWO! (car chase and turkey -- only turkey story took a sad turn)

Is this KO's way of saying either Ohio gets its election @&*% together or he's going to keep riding Ohio's #@%?

264. Hello, KOEB. I was invited to join you all by WhirlyGirl,
Because of statements I made about Keith and his show, which I truly believe is one of the best on the air. He tackles things that the MSM totally leave behind, and he has the guts to say what he thinks. But I don't know any of you so I can't participate in your greetings to each other. Hello to you all. I'm just Rhiannon. All I really know is what I see on the show, which I've followed for a long time. I thought that tonight's was exceptional. He got in more comments on the "James Guckert" scandal, which the MSM has been largely refusing to carry. I admire so much about what he's been managing to do, but don't see anybody here addressing it. I'd like to be a part of KOEB, but I'm not one of you, and am just totally lost. Help?

Rhiannon:shrug:

266. So glad you finally jumped in, Rhiannon!
No need for any extensive background to join the KOEB -- all you need is an appreciation for KO in all his aspects...

~ as intrepid journalist
~ as talented writer
~ as newsman with amazing recall
~ as sly wit
~ as TV's "Sexiest Newscaster"
~ as all-around lovely and compassionate man

... and you're instantly qualified to become a member!

Don't worry about not knowing everyone right off, you'll begin to differentiate our individual personalities before long. (Probably the one you'll want to butter up first is Sparky -- since he's the one serving the drinks most nights!)

And now... the KOEB toast and motto... inaugurated on Feb. 1, 2005...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x312803

... when Keith thoughtfully wore the *BIRTHDAY TIE* sent to him by a number of imaginative KOEBers:

"TO THE TIES THAT BIND!" :toast:

And the primary expression of affection for our guy Keith -- floaty hearts (also abbreviated as "floaties")...

:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

Welcome, Rhiannon!! :hi:

279. Thanks, WhirlyGirl, and I did try. I looked at the thread most days.
But not much of anybody seemed to be discussing the stories he covered. That's what I meant. That's the charm of the piece to me. Yes, Keith is a brilliant and intrepid newsman, willing to tackle stories others refuse to, but that's the point. He's a newsman, it's not not his hair or his tie. He tells it like it like it is, and that's the reason we admire him.

283. He is everything you say, Rhiannon...
... and I've never seen a serious comment with regard to his reporting go unresponded to here. If you wish to drop by and contribute your insights (and from what I read on the other board you have many, and well expressed), we will welcome them gladly!

I've described "Countdown" as SERIOUS NEWS WRAPPED IN A HAPPINESS PILL. It's that special blend of hardnosed journalism and (sometimes just barely) controlled anarchy -- both of which proceed from the personality of Keith himself -- which help us members keep our sanity in these anxious times and inspire us to to meet here each evening to praise KO in all his aspects.

KO is brave and beautiful up on that high wire -- and we of the KOEB constitute his joyful net!

Quite fit with the other remarks on these threads. And I don't know any of you, though I do know many on DU, after more than two years. I am an admirer of his because of his journalistic integrity. He's had the guts to report on the "Jeff Gannon" case when nobody else would, even to the extent of putting up a pronunciation guide to this weirdo's real name, LOL! And he has a sense of humor, always appreciated. Yes, I'm a fan of Keith, but not in the same way as many on these threads seem to be. So I wasn't sure if my take was welcome. Thank you.

... don't let our seeming dementedness fool you: Altho we frequently delight in building Keith castles in the air, no member that I know of has ever actually tried to MOVE INTO THEM!

I just feel that I don't fit in, since I* am more interested in what Keith reports than in the man, himself. Yes, he's a great reporter, but that's what I admire about him, not what he wears or how he looks. You understand.

291. A Keith Olbermann group?!
What an excellent idea. I think with the number of posts on these threads, there must be enough members to support it. And it's not like, with the Jon Stewart group, we would have to suffer through yet another week of repeats, before there's something new to talk about!:-)

Proposed Keith Olbermann Group

So, we're here to create a mission statement to submit to Skinner for a KO Group. Start brainstorming. We all know the post counts are out of control, and the desire to chat during the day and on weekends causes the Friday threads to go until Monday, so let's spread the love around.

Here are the offical rules: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

From Nothing Without Hope in last night's thread:

1. We can concentrate more on the show during the live-blog time. This would both increase the information content for those of us without cable and also reduce the number of posts, which is what Skinner says is the major slow-down factor for big threads.

2. We can post at other times without dealing with a long thread or a thread that is hard to find. It would be started in our Group Forum, presumbly within the 2004 Elections Forum, so we could check there whenever we wanted and find each other.

3. We can start threads that are not so directly related to only the topics raised on KO's show but are important to us, or expand on subjects that he touches on in one or two shows but are not mentioned otherwise. After all, much of his show is on topics that don't need discussion -- but some of them do beyond the time given on his show.

4. Our live-blog thread could be more accessible and probably shorter (and easier/faster to load as a result), so might be less intimidating for people who would like to join us but get lost in the long thread and many inside jokes.
---

Here's an example of a mission statement that I cribbed from the Groups. This should give us somewhere to start:

The purpose of the African-American Issues Group is to have a place on DU to discuss issues which directly affect the African-American community. Our goal is to reach out beyond the walls of DU and affect the black community with the message of what real moral values are and how those values lead us to liberal causes. DUers from all races are welcome to participate.
--

This thread's address will appear in tonight's <2-24-05> KOEB Thread so everyone can participate in the discussion. At the moment, the only drawback seems to be some regulars who are star-less. I've also heard from people who would be more than willing to sponsor some stars -- myself included -- so even that might not be a problem. Besides, if this causes more donations to DU, so much the better.
