18. Here's the sticker and info

I shyed away from using anything that said "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" for trademark infringements, but a sweet bumper sticker might make the more liberal and left-leaning in your community - who will be fed up with Faux News and KNOW what the "Faux News" in this refers too and may be compelled to flip the channel.

Go here to order: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/prod.aspx?p=tellthetruth.18...
(Note: there is no markup on this item. It's purely to get the word out about Keith and nothing more. I'm not into profitting off someone else's name.)

Also, Crispini, WhirlyGirl thinks we need a hyphen or comma after "Real News - Not Faux News." If you're here, can you re-do that and I'll stick the new sticker up at the CafeExpress site?

I also think we should ask, en masse, to have MSNBC sell Countdown products: shirts, mugs and the like. They should be doing this already.

I also like the "I get my news from Keith" idea - a lot.

I can do something with words on pics... I can put that up. Who's idea was that? Give credit where credit is due.

We WILL get the news out about Keith!

I think she's too divisive and will kill our chances of winning. If she gets the nomination, I'll vote for her, but I think there are others who will have a better of chance of winning.

187. Yes, fine Sparky.
I was taking my son to a lesson, and going the route I usually take, going very slowly thank goodness because it was really coming down. I took a road that in retrospect was not a good choice because it's a bit of a hill. I was trying to break at the light with one car ahead of me and my brakes would just not work, at all. Pretty scary but rather than hit the car and perhaps push us both out into a very busy intersection I swerved over, only going about 3 maybe 5 mph and had no choice but to hit the street sign. Scariest part was my son in the front seat. We are both fine. The weird thing is the car looked really busted in front at first glance but when I backed up it all straightened out, theres just a grill that'll need replacing. It could have been alot worse. My first instinct tonight was to cancel his lesson but I didn't go with the hunch. Should have just stayed home and watched Keef.

I met a really cute cop though (who just happened by, he said there had been tons of these little collisions all over town, most on straighaways and not inclines) and the hubby came to the rescue, so I got to play the damsel in distress thing after my adrenaline calmed down. All in all, not a fun experience and a pricey 5 minute drive, grill should cost at least 2 bills. Oh well, we are alright. Enough adventure for tonight.

I will take a shot of sauza straight up (without the worm please) if you're still pouring.

KO version of the news. I also love the idea of one that says ' I get my news from Keith.' That kind of creates a buzz, people might ask about that one. I'm a little behind on this cafe press thing, is it a site where you can make your own signs, and bumper stickers, and mugs? Is that where you made and ordered the KOEB mugs? I definitely want one of those.

236. OK... here's the draft of my e-mail to the Countdown staff
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 01:07 AM by Clark2008
Dear Countdown staff:

Last night I wrote you a request to offer "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" paraphernalia and/or links to purchase such paraphernalia if it already exists. I also made my request to the NBC Shop, along with several other Countdown fans. The purpose of our asking for this material is to promote your show as a true word-of-mouth campaign because we genuinely believe in the show.

There is now a grassroots effort afoot to get the Countdown name out amongst the general population. There are too many people who think that CNN and Faux, erm, Fox News are the only two players in any given town and haven't experimented with turning the channel up toward the MSNBC direction. Therefore, we have created a list of ideas to get people to ask about Countdown and/or Olbermann. Everyone I know who has changed the channel and watched him at my prompting absolutely loves him and his show and refuses to watch anything else at 8 p.m. - that is ONCE they knew about Countdown, which is the crux of this grassroots effort.

We have already created bumpers stickers using Cafe Press that say: Olbermann: Real News - Not "Faux News" MSNBC 8 PM/EST for our group's personal use in hopes that passersby will see the sticker and tune in or, at least, ask about the show. The sticker is pretty innocuous and doesn't mention Countdown by name; therefore avoiding any problems with trademark laws.

However, we'd like to take this grassroots effort a bit further and use a picture of Mr. Olbermann for coffee mugs with the slogan, I Get My News From Keith. My e-mail is to ask that we be able to use a picture of Keith Olbermann without dishonoring the MSNBC trademark and/or any and all agreements he may have with MSNBC. Could he or you provide such a picture and/or can we pick out a picture off the Internet to use? What are your guidelines for using a picture taken via TIVO from a Countdown show? Your guidance in this matter is important to us as we are attempting to honor and promote Mr. Olbermann.

The only group or organization making any money off of this effort is Cafe Press, as they are the established conduit toward semi-mass producing such paraphernalia. The stickers and mugs have not/will not been marked up for any personal gain by any of the fans. The effort is to make the products inexpensive enough do that dozens of people in dozens of cities will be able to purchase them, slap them on their car or pour their morning coffee into them to create a buzz. It's grassroots at it finest.

Finally, if MSNBC does decide to produce its own Countdown paraphernalia, we would be more than happy to discontinue the fan site, if you feel it's necessary.

Again, your input and guidance on this matter is important. I realize that we could have taken any picture of Keith off the Internet and used it, but we'd much rather have your blessings.

Sincerely,
(my name removed)
on behalf of Keith Olbermann's fans in the blogging community

If nothing else, it should make them smile.

Do you guys see anything I need to add or omit?

P.S. I added this line to the end after "we'd much rather have your blessings." (and we don't want Keith having to turn all Maxwell House-man on us!)
Best to be just a TOUCH snarky so they know we're real fans, right?

239. LOL! I wouldn't use the pool pic. I want his FACE to be more
recognizable on a mug for this effort (now, if you want to create your own 'pool pic Keith' mug for personal, ahem, use, feel free! I just wouldn't recommend you selling it!)

However, I think we'll be kind of limited in what we can (and should) use. I know some are wanting the official MSNBC portraits of Keith, but that might be pushing the trademark laws. I was thinking about the Tie picture, trimmed to fit (Hell, I could use that one know if I darkened out the MSNBC logo in the corner. But, I'd rather have their blessings).

I don't think any self-respecting KOEBer would turn down the tie shot, since it's our tie and all. :)

241. The trademarked one would be the first one, yes.
They probably won't let us use that one without paying a bundle.

Therefore, I was thinking either the Tie one (in Patsy's beginning post) or the Spongebob one you just posted. Both of those were taken off TIVO. Probably cannot trademark those as they are screen shots of something ANYONE with the right software could have taken.

So... I'm banking on using a TIVO shot.

Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 01:43 AM by WhirlyGirl
PLUS, it's too exclusive to our group. Better to make the tie shot an alternative photo for the KOEB mug -- and for the big campaign, choose a different pic which the general public can relate to.

I'd still try to persuade Keith to try and persuade the company to license you the use of the "official" KO portrait for a nominal fee -- say, 10.00. They can do that.

246. PS - If they let you use the OFFICIAL portrait, they have control over...
... the QUALITY of the photography being used.

I recall reading that Charles Schultz hated home-brew "Peanuts" paraphernalia because he worried that people would think he drew that way. He wanted to pick out the drawings being used, to protect the quality of the art.

So too, possibly, w/ MSNBC.

261. Problem is I can't guarantee the quality. I'm not producing the mug.
I'm only providing the .jpg, which I could make sure was as good as possible, but I'm not sticking it on the mug and producing it. That's the rub for any grassroots organization.

However, if the shot belongs to Keith (and it might), he could OK it.

I'm just not banking on MSNBC letting us have the portrait for $10, seriously. It's just not the way corporations work. That's why I'm asking for other suggestions.

... It's the network's "creative."

I'd go ahead and ask, anyway.

Which ever one you start with, it should be the clearest image possible -- for the reason you stated: someone ELSE is reproducing it, and there may be some detail lost in the process.

Although... they did a real nice job w/ those floaty hearts! :loveya:

I did see the weekend KOEB thread where Fly hit her 1000th post with FLY-ing colors (of course) and much KOEB brew and cheers.

Sparky must have hit his fairly recently, and Botany is closing in on it to, last time I looked.

I may not be able to join the Group confab tonight, but wil be over there again tomorrow.

And it's also lovely to be greeted this way! Why, when my computer connection finally allowed me to circle around and check for replies, there were three of them!

I think that sometime in the next week I may be hooked up to DSL at long last. Then I can actually "talk" with you wonderful people instead of gnashing my teeth while this connection wheezes and creeps and crashes.

And one for you too!

BTW, re the KOEB Group - I got a PM last Fri or Sat from a person who is new to DU but is a donating member and wants to join. She says she reads our threads and enjoys them, but can't post during our liveblogging hours. She's looking forward to the group. I think and hope there will be other people like that too.

With the Group there, you'll be able to sign on when you feel like it and find KOEB-related threads easily.

I'm signing off for the evening and will "see" you tomorrow! I hope to get back to the Group brainstorming thread and see what they've been doing. I don't know what the most recent version of a draft mission statement is, nor have I gotten around to drafting one of my own, which is an exercise I want to do for my own benefit if for no one else's.

34. I don't want to offend anyone here, but Hillary's a sure loser in a
General Election.
I hope Dems wisen up.
I live in a "red" state and I really would like to change that, but I gotta have something better to work with than Hillary, who is hated by as many moderates as conservatives. :eyes:

I don't like her, I don't trust her, and I think the opposition to her would be very solid. There may also be ugly baggage that would come out during the campaign.

But most of all, I just don't want her as my president, even if she could magically win.

I don't know the answer to that, but I DO know that talking about how Dems want Hillary is one of the standard Rethug talking points, intended to arouse repugnance and suspicion. Nice bunch.

266. I agree. All those Hillary polls just point up one of the many
weaknesses of polls as decision-making tools. It all depends on the questions chosen, the wording, whom you ask, and when/where you ask them. And then there is the whole boodle of people who refuse to participate or who are not answering phone calls. Those people have their own demographic and often outnumber the people who DO participate.

Polls comparing likely future candidates are interesting but not to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, they ARE taken too seriously by many. And all those polls prominently featuring Hillary are not doing the Dems any good, IMO.

53. Totally off topic, but I have a question
I was out in the lounge today and found a thread that talked about the gallery -- out on Demopedia where DUers can post their pictures. I hadn't known about this before. Do you all know about it? I posted mine and went out to look for the KOEBers and Crispini was the only one of the regulars who was out there. I didn't know if it was because people didn't know about it or because people didn't want to post their pictures.

82. There are instructions out there...if you have trouble, maybe
someone can help walk you through it. It wasn't that hard, as long as you can get your photos formatted the way they need to be. I thought maybe we should all put our pictures up --- so we can put faces to ourselves. I know there was a thread way back before I was out here where people put their photos in the thread, but having them in the gallery would be a permanent record.

My aunt in upstate New York called. Unbelieveably the phones were working and she told us where the eye was and what was happening. Sort of the reverse of what you've got going on. :)

There's a really small intersection, in the middle of a very crowded part of Miami, and there's a thin, wide sign off to the side of the road that says "Haines City 205 Miles". Our local free weekly did a story on Haines City because no one here had ever heard of it or knew why there was a sign for it. :)

153. Hey, Cheese! Good to see you!
We're expecting a foot of snow tonight, on top of the foot or so that hasn't melted yet. If you're NOT expecting a foot of snow, maybe this news will be cheering!

I'm going to try to get out tomorrow despite the snowy roads to a very special event, the completion and dispersal of a Mandala of Compassion created at Wellesley College (near Boston) by a group of Tibetan Buddhist nuns. The dispersal of the sand into the lake will symbolize the release of the loving compassion into all the world. I've been told by a person who has visited the mandala site twice in the last week that the atmosphere there is truly amazing -- healing, full of warmth, peace and love. Sounds like a wonderful way to feed the spirit.

I posted info about this in a couple of Forums at DU for local people who might want to take advantage of this rare event:

Wish I could hop a plane and join you!

Have you thought of posting this in "Liberal Christians/Progressive People of Faith" group? Maybe some who live nearby would like to see it.

As far as snow is concerned: who knows? Forecast changes hourly around here. And because I live on Lake Michigan, we get a lot of lake-effect snow that the weathermen feel is not important enough to mention. We had about 3-4 inches, then another inch that fell after I cleared the driveway. I'm leaving it. One does not use the snow-thrower twice in one day (bad for the lungs).

263. Thanks, Cheese - I wasn't previously aware of that Group
and I have just posted on the mandala there as you suggested.

I'm heading out soon for the mandala site and will think of all of you while I am there. There's a lot of new snow on the ground, but the road crews around the Boston area are very experienced and fully manned, so I'm thinking the roads won't be impassable on the way to Wellesley. I'll just avoid any back-road "short-cuts"!

As far as jumping the shark, yep, yer right. The whole damn show was so in house politically predictable. Glad for Jamie Foxx, loved him since Wanda The Ugly Girl on Living Color, BUT not sure if promoting corporal punishment ("when grandma whipped me")was a comfortable message to 'stage moms' et al.

Hey, I went to my county Dem meeting last night and signed up to be a delegate to the state convention in Oshkosh this summer. That's your part of the world, isn't it? We should plan a meet-up.

What are the dates? I can get there in about 1-1/2 hours (if there aren't any cops on 41, that is!).

So, your county has meetings... Mine has events that are advertised in the local rag AFTER they are held. No wonder they're small.

After reading this thread I tried to compile all of the ideas into a coherent statement. Hope's idea kicks it off and then all of the other ideas are listed in two sections indicating that this Group is not a "fan club" or social gathering, but a mini-PAC (with no financing) intent on creating positive change. So, that's my try. :)

254. Random thoughts
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 08:24 AM by Botany
* For a monday night their is sure a lot of estrogen and empty bottles to clean up.

* Letting an EDV have any sort of access to Keith is kinda like letting
Michael Jackson watch your 11 year old son.

* Do not spend one minute thinking about what Ann (the man) Coulter says ....
she knows that saying outrageous things are her meal ticket.

* Celibacy also means having pure thoughts too ...... ergo NO EDV (except the Rev)
should even dream of it.

* Is it just me or has Rove killed mangate?

... and no more than 5 minutes before air time.

It's discouraging for people w/ dial-up to find 30 messages already posted BEFORE the show even starts!

283. especially since Keith does a long stretch at the start of the show.
Story number 5 usually runs about 15 minutes so if you only blog during commercials, you're behind the curve when you hit the first commercial break even if people start "talking" only a few minutes before the hour. When they start twenty or thirty minutes beforehand, it takes me forever to catch up!

287. I'm trying to imagine
at what temperature nacho cheese on the skin would be comfortable, and just not getting there. If it's too cool, it will congeal, and pull on your skin/hair and if it's too warm it's going to burn and mostly run right off of you and wouldn't the texture feel pretty nasty in any case? What was this yutz thinking? Damn, how drunk do you have to be to think this is a cool idea??

And Monica's "Torture TV" story? They're giving Fox free ad time now???

The one that accompanies it is yummy, also; there's something about the way KO leans forward w/ his elbow on the desk that just looks like a newsman. Looks like he's about to share something important with all of us.

If I'm not with you tonight it'll be because I can't log on -- but I'll still be watching and low-tech blogging w/ pad & pencil, and will contribute any meaningful thoughts as soon as service returns.

As of this moment, I'm here on dial-up. Hope THAT lasts, at least!
