I'e been messing up on names, dates, events, all day. My church folk think I've lost it. And I'm not sure they're wrong, either.

You got just one cat? I have three, and they're all demanding my attention. Apparently, they've missed me. :)

"I don't own pajamas. But unless I'm working from the office, I'm not blogging in a suit. Usually just slacks and a polo shirt. Except when I wear my Darth Vader costume. As to knowing it's really me, not too many folks write the way I do, and I can assure you if I could find them, I'd have hired them already to write the TV scripts."

14. I have bad news we can discuss while we're ignoring the MJ stuff.
I got laid off today.
It was one of those situation where they told me they didn't need the position anymore and I could resign or get fired (I opted for "fired" so I could draw unemployment). I got two weeks severance and bye-bye.
I have no idea what I'm going to do.
Any support you guys can offer will be appreciated. My friends over at the Clark blog have been playing headhunter for me and sending me links. I may have to move, even though I don't want to (my Mother helps me soooo much with my son), but there's really nothing here. I do have a line on a communications director's position at the University, but that's about it.
I probably will do some office work in temp jobs to stay afloat (my ex has paid me exactly $593 in four years in child support, so that's no help).
Prayers or whatever it is you do are appreciated and accepted.

31. They didn't have my separation papers ready
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 08:18 PM by Clark2008
My boss - um, former boss (he's OK - I think the decision was more HIS boss's) e-mailed me that he would e-mail them to me as soon as HR had them ready.
I'll file Monday. My son's off from school tomorrow, so I think I'm just gonna get drunk tonight with you all and then we both can sleep in tomorrow. I'll set up some interviews with some temp agencies to get some income trickling in, but I won't go do all that stuff until Monday.

Oh, I was in public relations marketing for a tech company (which probably explains the lay off. They've had two sales positions open for a year).
I'm looking at new media ads in Washington DC right now.

Oh, and Crispini, I'll send it out to you after the show (the resume, I mean.) If you have luck with that, I hope it works for me!

36. It's more complicated than that.
My ex is an illegal alien and, until the USA decides whether they're going to let him stay or go, then he cannot work. Immigration has kept him in court for THREE YEARS.
He sent me $100 two weeks ago because the state Child Support referee said she was going to jail him if he didn't pay SOMETHING. She kept asking how HE was living if he couldn't work. She pretty much told him to cut off his telephone and give the $35 bucks a month to his kid.

We also have a half Lab/half hound-of-some-sort named Blue. Blue is FROM Washington DC - my grandfather lives there and he gave us the dog - an accident when a stray he took in mated with one of his hunting dogs.
My grandfather and aunt live there, so if I find a job in that area, I will have family there. They won't be much help in the child-care department (Pepaw is 80 and my aunt has dibilitating diabetes), but I won't be alone and that's important.

87. And I knew going into marketing that that type of work was
highly "lay-off prone."
My former dean of students from college, who still keeps in touch with me, advised me of this when I asked for his advice after switching from reporting to public relations/marketing. He said companies nearly ALWAYS lay off the marketing staff first to save the sales staff.
I was laid off after two months work in my first marketing job. That was when the Bush economy first hit - the summer of 2001.

122. I was in Knoxville for a meeting years ago, and that's my only
connection with the place, unfortunately. Oh, I want to help and I don't see an obvious way to do it.

LaLa_RawRaw of Raw Story told me they were looking for writers, but I can't imagine it pays much if anything. Supplementing income with freelance writing of articles for magazines and other media, print or virtual, is a really tough road in any case, and you've got your son who needs you to be with him as you have been instead of working too many extra hours on a computer. You probably know all about that route already.

Are there other major cities in commuting distance? I'm unfamiliar with that area and it's easier to ask you than try to figure it out from maps.

work would you be interested in? My sister-in-law and her husband are both paralegals and also have ties to the music industry there.

They are very nice people but I warn you, they are rabid Republicans. They used to be New York liberals, but since moving down there in 1986, they've had chips implanted in their brains.

131. I'm in public relations or reporting - communications, basically
I was a reporter for 12 years, freelanced while I stayed home with my son for two years, then went into public relations marketing when I had to go back to work full time because of my divorce.

BTW, I used to cover courts for the newspaper. I'm very familiar with the law. Therefore, if your family knows any attorneys who need a "business developer" (which is a fancy word for marketing), then I'm their woman.

Oh - and how did moving to Nashville change them? Nashville is a "blue" city? They must live in the suburbs.

140. No it wasn't Nashville that changed them. They are very right wing about
Israel. They are not in the burbs, right in Nashville proper. My brother-in-law was a laid back, lapsed, Catholic, jazz musician from Shreveport, Louisiana and my sister-in-law was a laid back singer/songwriter/artist liberal Jewish lady when they met and lived in Manhattan. They moved to Nashville and just a few years ago David converted to Orthodox Judaism and they both became very Zionist and right wing after the second intifada began. They voted for the blivet twice, because they believe the tripe about him being a friend of Israel. They also believe he is tough on terrorism. Never mind that the fundies believe that the Jews who don't accept Jesus as their savior will be vaporized on the spot. They also believe that Fox news is fair and balanced.

But if you don't discuss politics with them, and believe me I don't, they are really lovely, caring people. I have to go down there in June, one of my galleries in is Nashville, and I have to stay with them. I am going to zip my lip about anything remotely to do with politics or religion. The lawyer my sister-in-law works for however, was and is an ardent Kerry supporter. I will ask whether or not they know of any one in need of a 'business developer', if that is the term I should use.

202. Sorry I missed this conversation last night
Maybe you'll see it today. Sounds like my parents -- they always voted Democratic until this last election, and just because they think blivet** is so good for Israel (as if Kerry would have been bad). My brother and sister both live in Israel and voted for blivet** as well. I was so mad at my parents.

I'm the black sheep of the family -- the only one who isn't Orthodox. I worked on my parent forever and couldn't get them to budge. You should have seen our Detroit Jewish News during the campaign -- there were always dueling ads and lists of those voting Repuke and those voting for Kerry. I've never seen anything like it. There was even a new group: Jews for Bush. :puke: Made me crazy.

How are conservatives able to perpetuate this myth: that the media are liberal?

Simple. They own the media.

And in the massive media conglomerates' zeal to explain to you how "fair" they are, the dichotomy is that they also slip the shive between your ribs as they accept, without question, anything a conservative says or does. Or, in the least, as they fail to give credit to liberal blogger-researchers-news outlets who, at least three times this year thus far, have broken stories too large for the mainstream media to continue to ignore.

If I had a dime for every time I heard a caller to Rush Limbaugh say that "most" reporters are "liberal," or even a nickel for every time CNN mentions the conservative blogosphere as having "torn down" Dan Rather, I'd have enough money to own my own media outlet.

First, there's the fact that, in 2004, when PEW Research found that only 34 percent of reporters considered themselves liberal, newspapers and conservative bloggers posted screechers like these:

1. Pew: Five Times More Journalists Are Liberal Than Conservative - The Media Research Center
2. Poll shows liberal tilt escalates in newsroom - The Washington Times
3. National media is generally very liberal - Charles Krauthammer
4. If you don't like it, just go away!... Shocker Poll: Journalists are Liberal. - Bunnie Diehl.worldmagblog.com

But what these misleading headlines fail to mention is that 54 percent, yes, that's right, more than half, of the reporters surveyed said they were moderate. Straight-up, down-the-middle, neither "right" nor "left" - moderate.

Secondly, a fact that never gets mentioned by Limbaugh, his callers or polling organizations is this white elephant in the center of the room: Where is the survey of the media's CEOs and their political leanings?

Anyone who has ever worked in a newsroom understands the process of gathering news. It isn't limited to the attending of an event, the gathering of facts and the writing of the story. A reporter must also get around a series of gatekeepers: the copy editor, the editor, the publisher or producer, the slant of the organization and The Boss.

The "gatekeeper" - that invisible Thyraeus in the loft who's name is on your paychecks and who's opinion of your work directs whether there will be another paycheck - have more to do with the selection of news covered than the reporter assigned to cover them. If it doesn't get covered, it isn't news, and it doesn't matter if the reporter not covering it is a card-carrying member of NOW and the ACLU and donates to MoveOn.com.

And, it's no big secret that most corporate CEOs are conservative. Even that so-called "liberal Democrat," Sumner Redstone, the CEO of CBS's parent company (you know CBS, former home of Dan Rather, the anchor most reviled by conservatives) supported Bush.

"I don't want to denigrate Kerry," Redstone said at a Forbes magazine Global CEO Conference, "but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on. The Democrats are not bad people. . . . But from a Viacom standpoint, we believe the election of a Republican administration is better for our company."

This is why your media would have you believe that what befalls Michael Jackson or Martha Stewart or Scott Peterson matters more to the physical and financial security of your family than George W. Bush's Social Security privatization plan, the paperless voting machines in the swing states and truth about the "war on terror." Isn't Viacom, in all fairness, the most liberal of the media conglomerates, an entertainment company?

Take, for example, the gaping maw of coverage that was sucked into the black vortex known as the Jeff Gannon story. Gannon, a White House Press Room "reporter," was given a job by Talon News, a company owned by GOPUSA and funded by Texas Republican extraordinaire Bobby Erble.

For two years, Gannon's extremely right-leaning questions, complete with commentary straight out of the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy," raised not ONE eyebrow among press members in the galley built over the old White House swimming pool.

It wasn't until bloggers, non-reporters, watched a taping of one of the press conferences and wondered who in the hell this "reporter" was and why he was lobbing such questions that were not only softballs, but inaccurate on their face, did we learn the tale of a man called Jeff.

Gannon, as it turns out, is James D. Guckert, a prostitute who has been pimping himself online to more than just readers of the Free Republic.

But the corporate media's response was not outrage, it was denial.

Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz twisted himself into a pretzel large enough to become lodged in a president's throat to try and convince the salivating masses that there was no story in Gannon, despite his being issued daily passes so he could avoid the FBI screening. Kurtz seems not to get that Gannon's personal life stopped being personal once he posted his dangling participles on gay escort sites. He also does not get that Gannon compromised both the press corps and the White House because of his, ahem, moonlighting.

The only outrage in the mainstream media was from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who is decidely not mainstream in either his delivery or in his bouquet of fresh topics for viewers (even if he has been hyping the Jackson case a bit too much lately).

"It was a bad enough that somebody let in a guy with no media experience, an alias, and a background as an on-line escort -- but why did they let him in if he wasn't even pretending to represent a news organization of any kind?" Olbermann opines.

Now, the Gannon story has gone by the wayside as Michael Jackson's pajamas take center stage, while the next biggest news story is the news, or the lack thereof.

A memo from former Newsday writer Laurie Garrett expresses this fear, but I doubt it will make it to your nightly news:

"This is terrible for democracy. I have been in 47 states of the USA since 9/11, and I can attest to the horrible impact the deterioration of journalism has had on the national psyche. I have found America a place of great and confused fearfulness, in which cynically placed bits of misinformation (e.g. Cheney's, "If John Kerry had been President during the Cold War we would have had thermonuclear war.") fall on ears that absorb all, without filtration or fact-checking. Leading journalists have tried to defend their mission, pointing to the paucity of accurate, edited coverage found in blogs, internet sites, Fox-TV and talk radio. They argue that good old-fashioned newspaper editing is the key to providing America with credible information, forming the basis for wise voting and enlightened governance," she says in the memo to her former colleges. "But their claims have been undermined by Jayson Blair's blatant fabrications, Judy Miller's bogus weapons of mass destruction coverage, the media's inaccurate and inappropriate convictions of Wen Ho Lee, Richard Jewell and Steven Hatfill, CBS' failure to smell a con job regarding Bush's Texas Air Guard career and, sadly, so on.
"What does it mean when even journalists consider comedian John -- "This is a fake news show, People!" -- Stewart one of the most reliable sources of "news"?
"It would be easy to descend into despair, not only about the state of journalism, but the future of American democracy. But giving up is not an option. There is too much at stake."

You got it, Laurie. Too bad the world of journalism has just lost you to other ventures.

And the world has lost journalism, at least here in the home of the Free Press.

From now on, in an effort to promote honesty, journalism schools should just call themselves "corporate shill" schools. They could teach such nuanced subjects as "Communications Law: The Protection of the CEO," and "Magazine Writing To Promote the Bottom Line."

It would be more accurate than that First Amendment, freedom of the press mumbo-jumbo they're currently teaching our future reporters.

Hey, Lara, I am so sorry! Sometimes things happen to the wrong people. I'm gonna have a little talk w/God about that. You deserve better treatment than that.

On the up-side, do you think Keith MIGHT need a PR person? You could be in charge of the KO Merchandise Mart, and market Keef stuff to the world. I'm hoping they still look through our nightly blogs, and say to themselves, "you know, it wouldn't be a bad idea..." And maybe they can hire you to work out of your home, too.

Hang in there - I'll be waiting for that window to open for you!

201. just saw this, Clark -- sorry about your bad news
I've got my fingers crossed for the communications director's job at UTK -- it would be so wonderful if you didn't have to move and give up all the practical and emotional support you get from your mom. And looking at the job description (yes, I looked -- I used to know someone who's at UTK now and was hoping the position might be within her sphere of influence, but no such luck), I think you could do this job standing on your head. You're in my prayers, kid.

People are getting more and more odd and the only thing I can point to is that there is no real justice. I'm not knocking THIS judge or saying that her family deserved what they got, I'm speaking in general. That there is no hope for a lot of people and they just go whacked.
Do they know this suicide was FOR SURE the guy who killed the judge's family? I missed that part - I was telling my son how to spell, "football." :)

49. I sure hope KO is going to cover the 'new' story about the shooting attack
on the Italian journalist tonight. Now, we are hearing that the detail that shot at the car and killed the agent were on high alert because of a security presence to protect 'Necroponte', he was supposed to be passing through. So how come this story is now being put forth, days after they've tried out a couple of other versions to see if they'd fly. I can see a low level officer or even ground troops being made the scapegoat for this. I hope Italy withdraws their 'coalition of the willing' immediately.

135. In the OP on that thread, the poster says there will be a Part II on "why"
the hit was arranged. I'm assuming it has to do with the highly damaging articles she has been writing and further ones she is planning on the US miilitary actions in the Middle East. They don't want the world to be reading about them using napalm in Fallujah and all the rest. Giuliana Sgrena clearly has contacts with hot information that the US military does not want to be public.

Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 09:05 PM by Clark2008
For example, Social Security "reform" is tanking in the polls and, all of a sudden, after two years of refusing to utter his name, Bush is now talking about OBL.

Go figure.

Hi, bunny. I'm just getting through this thread for the first time. I'm starting from the bottom up. :)

So, you and I need to start a totally o/t thread in the rec room for AI. Nikko soooo shouldn't have been out. Constantine blew.

141. I so wanted Tracheotomy boy and Travis to go, as well as Amanda
'I;m too foxy for my shirt' Avila, and Jenay. They got it all right except for Nikko, and he was so good on Monday night, he was robbed. I didn't watch it in real time, my kids broke it to me when I got home from work.

I want Bo and my girl Nadia to fall in love and have a baby, and do a duet together. Mario was great too, and he took off the hat, and showed that head o'hair he got goin on.

143. I picked
Constantine, Travis, Avila-girl (who sucked from day one) and Janay and that awful weave to go. I also got it all right, except for poor Nikko. No way is Trach Boy going. He's a package waiting to happen. So is Anwar. If Anwar was cut, he'd have had a contract in a minute.

I was noticing not only Carrie's tasteful little number that said, "take a look at these"! But, also, Jessica figured if she displayed her assets she'd make it into the Top 12. She was apparently correct.

Simon, btw, has been waaaaay too nice. Does he have a new girlfriend this season?

Mario without the hat looks just like Tony Shaloub. :) I like what Simon said about Paula and Anwar having a baby.

Mario does look like Tony Shaloub, but he's Spanglish from the Bronx so I love him, plus he can sing, and he's got confidence for days.

I predict Bo or Nadia to win. Mario third, or Mario wins. Jessica Sierra has a nice quality to her voice, not awesome, but she badly needs a neck. Carrie is a cure for insomnia, she is corn-fed BORING. But you are right, the ladies are all breaking out the bodacious ta-ta's to make the cut into the top 12.

Simon likes brunettes. He may still be with his girlfriend but did you catch him say to Avila the other week ' In my next life, I'd like to come back as your microphone.' Exsqueeze me, baking powder?

Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 09:15 PM by Clark2008
I'm cringing just thinking what he's going to be like as a teenager, but, as a 5-year-old (6 in May), he's so clever, it's entertaining.

I took him out to eat last night and he was wooing the wait staff. He called the Heinz ketchup, "Kerry" ketchup because "John Kerry's wife makes it" to the delight of our waiter. Then he found out the waiter was in graduate school to be an ear doctor, so he asked the waiter if he'd examine his ears "just to make sure that infection I had two weeks ago was REALLY gone."
He also showed some little girl at the next table just how good broccoli REALLY is (she didn't want hers).
He really is a pip. Then again, he's never been sheltered. He's been to NYC twice and London once, already, AND worked on a presidential primary campaign.
I believe in exposing children to a lot. It rounds them out!

But yes, you're right, it IS pretty - now that I'm bundled in for the night with a lovely beverage and my DU friends. :)

I hadn't seen your WI forum post, but that's a GREAT idea. When I have more information on the convention, I'll start a proper thread about it. Heck, we could co-host the meet-up! As long as we can find where in Oshkosh they're hiding the beer...

I think "slip-n-slide" should be an Olympic sport. We definately have experience in that area! (one of our church guys slipped on black ice and broke his hip.)

Co-host? That would be a scream. If we can't find beer, then maybe we should fly Sparky in to bartend the event. If he can't do it, maybe your kid brother (the bleev) would be willing.

Snuggle in, and take care of those fingers... we need your wisdom on the board!

184. I have no knowledge of your finger
or any other part of your body, thank you very much! (except that a few got jammed pretty good today)

Do you wear your blue paperclip, too? That would be a neat thing to hand out at the state convention.

Today, a bunch of older people at church started ragging on bush. It was amazing - I never heard so much spewing by otherwise very nice and polite people. They are all fully convinced that this election was stolen, and are waiting for the truth about Ohio to come out in the open. Grey power!!

194. Yup. Got a blue metallic one on my coat.
Great idea about passing out paper clips at the convention. I have Atman's business card graphic which explains the concept - I could print out a bunch of those suckers!

You're so smart... :loveya:

195. now you're getting it!
I have my moments (even when tired). :)

I'm gonna try to stay up and see Keith tonight, but might fall asleep before then.

Is there some place where you could order a boxful of BLUE paperclips? Cause that would really be cool. I'd even kick in a couple of $$ to help the cause.

NGU.

198. I've been buying the multi-color packs, but I'll look online...
...and see if I can get a bulk order of just blue ones. Preferably the metallic ones. (They're cool.)

B-)

No wonder you needed some liquid fortification. NGU, even if it takes you more time to not do it. :)

171. Hiya, Sparky!
 to you too!
How ya doin' tonight? I read up-thread you got a nap. Yet you remain quiet and all-too-well-behaved. Good for you. I'd hate for you to have a good time when I'm not around!

Check out my post to CW. We might need to hire you this summer. :)

176. and I might add..
your mom is in FL, and what goes on here, stays here (or is that just in the group?).

I'm not bad. I'm just experiencing real life, so I can relate to my congregants better. They call me "down-to-earth." O8)

182. Down to earth
is why we love you.:loveya: Up thread we were talking about how quickly blivet** turned the country away from the direction it was in when Bill was Prez. I live in a VERY blue area, there's not even much of an organized Democratic party because they get elected here without any work. I want to get an early start on 08 presidential election. While MA will go Democratic, I've held signs in New Hampshire since they swing either way, and I live only an hour from the border. I'm looking for a viable candidate to support. I'm not inclined to go with Hillary, Dennis K., or Lieberman. I like Kerry, but not sure a second time will go any better. Clark seems pretty good, but I'm looking for others also. If you have any ideas, give me a PM. I'd ask in GD, but then it just starts a war.

I can't bear the thought of losing again, I have nephews getting to military age, and I'm worried. We need to win this next one.

187. I agree with your assessments.
And I, too, have a nephew who just turned 12. I couldn't love him more if he were my own kid. Both his parents are repubs, but he proudly announced to me last year that he was a democrat! (we are very close)

I've got a few ideas, and will PM them to you - perhaps tomorrow. My mind is tired today, and not at its best (and please don't ask "how can you tell?" - it's been obvious to EVERYONE today!).

I think its great that you're thinking ahead. If we're going to win anything, we've got to be further down the road than the next election. Maybe Howard can help us strategerize for the future.

But you know what really captures my heart.

Red looks good on Bucky, but I'd have to say that Blue is my favorite color.

DUKE Blue.

OK - question time:

Duke vs. Wisconsin - who are you cheering for?

The correct answer is:

Football - Wisconsin
Basketball - Duke

BTW - you must check out last night's thread. Botany poked his head in with a whole room of flowers and a mighty slam at yours truly.
