102. I think Barbara Boxer voted for Negroponte to strengthen her position
on defeating Bolton. They can't say the Dems are voting down ALL their whackjob criminal buds that way. Still, it was a shock to hear about her vote. I know she must have had a good reason, and I suspect what it was, but geez that guy is an abomination.

The blivet** is looking stupider all the time. His little "trust-me" tricks don't seem to be working as well on the credulous as they used to. I hope.

22. Just wanted everyone to know
that I may have at least a four-week temp job starting Monday.
I go in tomorrow for an interview.
It would be at the same pay I was making before I got laid off and all that would happen to my unemployment is that it would be suspended for the weeks I'm working.
I THINK it's a company where a friend of mine works based on the description (the recruiter doesn't tell you the company name until you pick up the job slip, which I'll be doing tomorrow morning).
It "COULD" turn into a permanent position since the company is expanding, but they're not sure yet.
Wish me luck!

Also - will be taking Blue in tomorrow for thyroid tests. After much researching to narrow this down (and keep the cost of my vet bill down while we play "hit and miss") I have confirmed through some websites and a vet friend of a friend that he probably has hyperthyroidism (oh, no - my doggie may have Mann Coulter's disease! :puke:). It's easily tested for and managed, but, of course, costs more money. He is keeping food down today, though. I bought him some of that high-priced chicken and rice dog food especially made for bad tummies.

Will keep you updated tomorrow.

42. radioactive iodine injection
costs a bomb, and you can't visit them for a week or so. (My friend Mary could, when her cat when to Camp Iodine, but she was a cancer survivor and already had the radioactive iodine tracer crap going around in her bloodstream so it wasn't like they had to worry about her glowing.) The iodine is a "permanent" solution but it often kills the thyroid dead, dead, dead so you end up treating for hypothyroidism. The disadvantage of the pills is that they can be hard on an animal's system, but that's usually only true for elderly pets. Since Blue is young, that's not an issue. And it may be that even if Blue is hyper that it will be transitory -- there's a type of autoimmune hypothyroidism that begins with a hyper phase. I'm sure your vet can tell you what's going on after the bloodwork comes back.

(she's "off-limits" right now. Anything she uses has to be destroyed, so I asked her if she was going to get one of those "terrorist" cell phone (disposable) - she thought that was a pretty cool idea.

223. when Battlecat had to go to Camp Iodine, Mary pointed
out that she hadn't been kept in such strict isolation after she'd been injected with a radioactive tracer. The vet's response, "you can be trusted not to pee on the sidewalk or the neighbor's three-year-old." Mary's rejoinder, "How can you be sure?" I do so enjoy hanging with Mary...

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
Harvard undergraduates are in a lather over a party where students
donned bathing suits and danced in a sea of foamy bubbles, only to wake
up the next morning with painful rashes. The party, which drew an
estimated 600 students last Saturday night, features a foam-making
machine that fills the dance floor with suds. The foam apparently
contains a chemical additive that keeps revelers from slipping, but can
cause rashes if it isn't properly mixed or washed off soon after
exposure. "I knew people who had it all over their body and couldn't get
out of bed in the morning," Harvard freshman Andrew Trombly said.
"Twenty years from now, it will be funny. At the time, it was kind of
painful."

I get the newsletter at work and I've been telecommuting the last two days. I was just wondering if our bad boy's going to play baseball hooky again tomorrow.

I cannot BELIEVE that guy! He's like something out of the nineteenth century!

KO did the smart thing by just letting that tape run for as long as he did and letting him dig himself a deeper and deeper hole with his unbelievable comments.

I once knew a victim of domestic violence, so this is close to my heart.

What a Neanderthal.

154. I still can't get over this guy...
...he found a way to totally get around answering a female reporter's question by telling her she was "unintelligent" and "really not that bright" and "demonstrating ignorance" for even asking the question! "You're not very bright, and you're just going to have to live with that"!

And kept saying how barbaric and uncivilized and inhuman and savage it was to have cockfighting, and that domestic violence was somehow not the same because a) tickets aren't sold to it (yeah, like THAT makes a difference to the women abused!) and because some women keep going back to the men who abuse them! And he implied "the women want to punish the men!"

Sometimes I am just amazed.

82. He apologized for the Sound Bite on Bob Kur
who apparently is a friend and colleague of his. The segment itself was taken from Leno but KO said something like "I don't think it should have been on his show and it definitely didn't belong on THIS show."

He also said he didn't realize it was coming.

I expect it will already be excised from the midnight rerun, which makes me wonder how they will replace it--with another Sound Bite, or just cut them out altogether?

In any case, someone on the Countdown staff is gettin' a spankin' from the Big Guy tonight. Guess he's a tad sensitive when it comes to making fun of broadcasters for the stuff they do when not on the air. At least if they're friends of his.

True, the squirrels and the sparrows know to fear them.
Red-tails are easy to spot - they have the copper-colored tail when they are adults, and they are BIG birds, with those broad wings. (They are in the broad-winged hawk family and love to soar.) When they are juveniles, they don't have that characteristic tail coloring, and then they are hard to tell apart from the others. Red-tails are also bigger than the sharpies, which have very different-looking legs in addition to being smaller and lacking that copper tail. Red-shouldered hawks also don't have it, but they are rather similar to the red-tails in many other ways. The squirrels and sparrows flee from them all. And they do help keep those populations controlled.

Wonderful creatures.

but was reading what you wrote and wanted to add, when they are hunting and zero in on their target they do not notice anything else around. Unfortunately when the food is near a highway they do not notice cars around here many have been hit because they dove in front of one. I have learned to watch the sky in certain areas here in case. I do not want to kill a red tailed hawk (or anything else). I joke though it is based on truth that to get to work I weave through deer, rabbits, squirrels and birds like you see stunt cars weave through cones to get there safely without killing anything including myself. Luckily they seem to have places they use by habit, except the squirrels which are suicidal.

The squirrels eat baby songbirds and anything else they can get, they really upset the balance. I've seen estimates that half the baby songbirds are killed by squirrels. They are basically cute rats with fluffy tails. The hawks are vulnerable in so many ways, and they breed much more slowly than squirrels and stay at low population density.

You already know how fortunate you are in living in an area so full of natural wildlife.

Good to see you!

137. Hi Hope
Hubby called thinking (rightly) I would still be up to say he is actually on his way home. There are an awful lot of squirrels on here but I just can't stand the thought of running even a suicidal one over.

It is great to have all the wildlife until they eat you impatiens or hit your car. (Know a few people that had deer hit their cars, not the other way around.)

146. Hi CC! I feel the same way. I would NEVER deliberately kill a squirrel
or even a mouse. I catch spiders in the house and carry them outside. (I have always admired spiders.)

But I'm glad that for the balance of things the hawks keep the squirrels controlled. It's good for all the animals and plants in the system. High levels of squirrels means starvation and death for the others, iincluding some of the squirrels. I can't kill them, I even like the sassy things, but I'm glad the hawks are on the job as they have been since long before there were people to watch them.

had to still a video tape from work (with permission) to record KO later. Hoping he doesn't change the show at all so I can see all I missed. Have to get in bed early since Gizmo goes in early for surgery. Hopefully it won't be long before Gizmo can do this:

Good to hear about even a temp job Clark. Hope it pans out to permanent.
Please keep us up to date on Blue.

Another beautiful picture Hope. I have been slacking in that department too... have spent my time helping the students get their final portfolios ready for the end of the term. BTW we seem to have a pair somewhere close by as I have seen them almost daily. Soon I should be able to get some eagle shots. (If I can get a day to get set up and watch for them all day.) There are a few nesting pairs close by this year.

139. I can put it here because it has aspects we should all think about
My 23-year-old daughter, who works on the opposite coast in California, was very nearly killed in a highway car wreck yesterday afternoon. Miraculously, she escaped all injury, though her car is a mess and she was T-boned (as they say) at high speed by a SUV.

It all happened very fast, starting when someone bumped her sideways in a way that caused her to lose control of her car and spin 360 degrees. 3 other cars then were involved in the accident. No one was seriously hurt. Amazingly, someone from her work (which was far away, she has a long commute) witnessed the end of the accident and was able to take care of her. She's home and fine. The number of weird "synchronicities" with all this, which I won't go into, are phenomenal. I knew something had happened before I heard about it, too.

So I'm still shaky, thoug she's fine and it looks like they'll repair her car over the next 2-1/2 weeks. Witnesses corroborated her description of what happened. The one who caused the accident never stopped.

She told me that when it was happeneing she thought this was it, she was going to die.

But she didn't.

know what I mean. I'll take a walk later and then listen to some calming music like Native American flute music or some Tibetan singing bowl recordings I have.

I would be a true mess if she were at all injured. I can't bear to even consider if it were worse than that.

I posted this here so we can all stop and think how quickly important things, the central things, can change.

It never hurts to be reminded of what's important.

I'm at Mom & Dad's now. Mom is very sick today (a possible reaction to her injections). She can barely move. I had to help her to the bathroom, fixed her something to eat (she wouldn't eat all day), and help her get back into bed. My dad is exhausted - I can see it in his eyes.

When Mom laid down, I laid down on the other side of the bed, held her hand, and started singing (all the good stuff she used to sing for me as a kid). It was one of those moments that you know will be etched in your mind forever. As she fell asleep, I just stroked her hair, and silently prayed, giving her to God's care.

Life is indeed precious.

Edited on Fri Apr-22-05 12:04 AM by Nothing Without Hope
Disasters and near-diasters on this level don't happen all that often. So sharing them means we can get more wake-up calls. And I have to look at it as a wake-up call, since she's all right. It was weird that I knew something serious had happened before the phone call. I didn't know what it was, but I couldn't sit still.

In giving your mother this loving care you are being fed too. You don't have to feel that you are on the outside with nothing to offer or do to comfort or make things better. I'm glad that you have that. Being without it is the worst kind of starvation.

194. Taking it for granted is a built-in survival mechanism
If we worried all the time about what might happen, we'd be paralyzed - and that does happen to some people. But it often goes too far into desensitization, going along to get along. Wake-up calls can shake you out of that and give a chance at a fresh perception of what is precious. I mean you know, but you need to be reminded to KNOW.

because he had very good reason to. They would understand that. He wouldn't have to say much to bring he point home VERY clearly, and they would never forget it.

More sign of character in Keith that he made the apology - not passing the buck or ignoring it or thinking it didn't matter. It's a big difference between his idea of humor and that you see on a lot of late-night shows where making fun of absolutely anyone is considered the easiest laugh. I used to greatly dislike the early David Letterman shows for that reason. He was rally nasty and condescending, calculating. Maybe he's mellowed since then - I don't watch any of them now so don't know.

192. You know what's really weird?
I dreamed last night that KO was my boss and he was chewing me out on the job!

It was really weird because I dreamed that I worked at a job where part of my responsibility was going live on the radio for two hours, and never having had to go live on the radio before (I don't work in the radio business), he was all mad at me because I had somehow skipped the two hours of coverage he had scheduled me for. I dreamed I had received no training for this work (which in real life is also true), and that I didn't even realize he had scheduled me for two hours of airtime until he came after me and chewed me out! "WHERE WERE YOU? I had you on the schedule for TWO HOURS! And you didn't even GET ON THE AIR!" I remember thinking this was terribly unfair of him too, because nobody even told me, and nobody gave me any idea what to do or how to handle it!

Dear me, I feel as if someone else on Countdown sorta lived out my nightmare tonight!

I woke up, quite relieved to realize it was only a dream, and then thought "How come if I'm going to have a dream about this guy, it's going to be that he's my boss, and he's yelling at me? Why can't I dream about him and me in a situation that's, er, um, happier, if you know what I mean?

I had actually dreamed that I was naked, and that we both noticed this, and that he then said, "Look...forget about the radio schedule. I'm sure I can find...better things for us to do."

I have exam dreams all the time. To this day. And in my exam dreams, it always turns out that I registered for a bunch of classes ages ago, and am only now realizing that I never bothered to attend any of them, and now I actually have to figure out how I am going to pass all of them despite having forgotten I even registered for them in the first place.

Ironically, I imagine KO felt much like this himself his last semester at Cornell.

I bet with all the pressure he lives under, Keith is well acquainted with his own equivalent of the exam dream. Like maybe getting up to give his broadcast and going blank on what he was supposed to say, or, more classically, finding he was naked or in some other very embarrassing focus of disdainful attention.

And maybe he still has deams of taking an exam back at Cornell.

He was in SC, right? There are plenty of "deep South" pockets where this kind of thinking is par for the course. I experienced much of the same in NC, and served in some places where the KKK was still active.

Those are scary MFers. :scared:

be dragged into the 16th century. And unfortunately have a clan presence around here. Though the good side is when they were trying to hand out literature in the closest town people let it fall to the ground instead of taking it.

KO: if possible, keep us updated on his fundraising, after this little media event.

Does anyone remember his name? I think I'll pull it off the transcript tomorrow and figure out a few good ways to harass him. Maybe I will send him dog poop or something.

214. Yeah, I can find 'em.
It'll be fun to re-read the threads again.

Another trick I've learned is to use the "Mark" feature. I don't read a lot on ERD anymore, so after traffic dies down (around 8:30 here), I hit "mark". Then all the new posts are in yellow, and the ones I have read are in white. Easy to find the new additions that way!

. . .

I'll type out the Gulls poem if you think you can use it. It's William Carlos Williams.

And the flying cat story is religious & hilarious, but has nothing to do w/ popes.
