2. Ellen and John work harder than anybody else in the movement.
And they do absolutely remarkable work putting together authoritative information for activists and officials alike. They've never asked for money before, but they can't afford to keep going without our help. Please pitch in, folks.

3. This is a really fine group, folks.
I sent this out to as many people on my personal list as I could think of, who have an interest in voting issues.

Friends from all over --

Although you wouldn't know it from media reports, thousands of citizens from around the country have been hard at work trying to get American voting systems to count votes fairly, transparently, honestly, and verifiably.

Of those, Ellen at Voters Unite is one of the hardest-working, smartest, fairest, most unassuming and most effective activists in the country on this issue, in my judgment. I have been interviewing people involved in this for over two years, and the efforts have been amazing. But, Ellen really stands out.

She published Myth Breakers, a lengthy national guide for election officials, that is unique in its credibility and authoritativeness. She talks with election officials and activists constantly, from around the country. She and her colleague John have amassed a huge library online of stories on elections and voting systems, available to all. They have long freely donated their time and resources to this issue, and have long brushed off suggestions that Voters Unite needs to raise money to survive, saying others need it more.

Finally, the group has asked for a small donation (see below). Please respond as you can, and let others know who would be interested. I'd like to see this group raise $1000, right off the bat. Can we find fifty people who would chip in $20 each?

One of the most fundamental elements of a democracy is to have the right to vote, and have that vote count. Giving money to candidates may be in vain, if the voting mechanisms are flawed.

Women fought for 70 years for the right to vote -- they spoke, they marched (one band of suffragists marched for fifteen days from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. in the winter of 1913), they went on hunger strikes, they went to jail. They were even beaten.

What will you do to preserve the right to vote and have that vote be counted, which is right now in peril? One way to help is to send any amount to help Voters Unite.

Zan

Message from Ellen and John at Voters Unite

Dear Voters,

VotersUnite.Org has been operating full time for a year without funding and with very few donations. Our own dimes are running out.

Hoping to continue providing our services to the voting integrity community, we are holding our first-ever fund raising drive, starting today. Our goal is to raise $15,000 by May 21.

If each of you donates $10, we will be over half way to our goal. If each of you sends this on to a friend who donates $10, we will reach our goal. (Feel free to give more if you like :-)

To donate, click here: http://www.votersunite.org/donate.asp.
You can choose to pay with Paypal (which takes credit cards) or by mailing a check to our address on that page.

PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL ON TO YOUR LIST. Or send this link http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/alert042805.htm

Thanks,
~ Ellen Theisen and John Gideon

If you will send something to Voters Unite, would you post that you are, here?

Words fail me at trying to describe for you how important they are, but they are absolutely crucial to our efforts to get verifiable voting.

If the movement were a car, some of the groups might be the flashy racing stripes, or the horn. (Hey, I'm not naming any names.)

Voters Unite is like the engine, or the steering mechanism -- not flashy, less visible, but vital.

If everybody reading this sends even $10, it would really help get things rolling.

8. In the past year we have:
· Authored two editions of "Myth Breakers" — "Myth Breakers For Elections Officials" and "Myth Breakers: Facts About Electronic Elections". This document has become a valued reference guide for elections officials, legislators, voting activists, and other interested citizens. It has been used by lawyers as testimony in court cases and by the Ohio state legislators who were pressing for voter-verified paper ballots in their state.
· Tracked issues from the 2004 election in an online "problem log," which was referenced in Representative Conyers' letter requesting the GAO to investigate the election. Recently, the GAO contacted us, asking for reports and other relevant information to help them in their investigation.(VotersUnite.Org continues to track new 2004-election issues as they are revealed.)
· Testified before committees of both the Washington state legislature and the California legislature and were among the many Washington activists instrumental in the recent enactment of a voter-verified paper record bill in Washington state.
· Researched and analyzed reference information used to promote and justify the recount effort in New Mexico (which, as you know, was defeated by the Governor and Secretary of State). Assisted with language for the New Mexico voter verified paper ballot bill that has passed through the legislature and was signed into law by Governor Richardson.
· Assisted with ideas and language for a new voter verified paper ballot bill that is expected to be filed in the US Senate at any time.

The ongoing services VotersUnite provides to the voting integrity community include:
· Producing handouts, flyers, and other informational materials, which are used by activists to inform themselves and their county and state officials. In addition to providing original materials, the VotersUnite.Org website has become a well-known repository for news articles, research documents and reports written by others, and even the lawsuit filed against Sequoia and Snohomish County, WA.
· Providing the "Daily Voting News" which is free to subscribers, giving a summary of the day's voting-related news articles to voting activists, elections officials, elected officials, media, attorneys, university professors, computer scientists and other interested parties. Many subscribers forward the daily email to their news groups and private lists.
· Speaking to groups in Washington as well as other states and participating in teach-ins and other educational forums.
· Writing articles on voting systems, the NIST certification process, and other subjects. Some of these papers can be found at VoterTrustUSA (www.votetrustusa.org), Lynn Landes' blog (http://www.ecotalk.org/NIST-EAC.htm) and The Dissident Voice (http://www.dissidentvoice.org/May05/Gideon0505.htm)
