Conyers: Unless we act...our dem. will suffer a potentially fatal blow
The Toledo Blade has been kicking some ass lately with "Coingate." This one is about election reform.

ELECTION REFORM

Congress called on to fix problems

By ANN McFEATTERS
BLADE WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

...snip

At the federal level, The Century Fund, which co-sponsored the National Commission on Election Reform after the 2000 election, co-chaired by former presidents Gerald Ford and Carter, reports the 2002 law is not working as it should. Worse, the Century Fund said the 2004 election revealed "a deeply flawed voting system that in many ways has become more complicated and prone to abuse" than in 2000 because the new law led to more obstacles in voting.

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said "tens of thousands" of voters still contact his office to express anger that "once again, their vote did not count." He held a hearing specifically on widespread 2004 problems in Ohio. President Bush received 286 electoral votes, 16 more than the 270 needed to win. Without Ohio, he would not have won.

Mr. Conyers insists most Americans want "real election reform," but he is not encouraged, saying congressional Republicans and Democrats remain far apart.

"Unless we act, the next close election will prompt the same debates and public confidence in our democracy will suffer a potentially fatal blow," Mr. Conyers told constituents.

1. Conyers deserves a medal for all that he's done for the democratic
party AND this country. All Americans, regardless of whatever party they belong to, have an interest in the political process and making sure that it is honest. Unfortunately many of too stupid and/or lazy to realize this.

3. AMEN!!!!!!!!
Is there some kind of medal the Dems could give him? Our medals would be legitimate, and only for people who have done actual good for America, unlike the medals Bush gives out, rewarding people for their evil deeds!

11. acmavm, I don't want to call people stupid or lazy who live behind the
Iron Curtain of the corporate news monopolies, and are more oppressed every day by millions of lost jobs, medical care and retirement systems they can no longer trust, and many other oppressions including the ghastly burdens of unjust war and massive thievery by the rich, and who trying to hold their lives and their families together, and often taking care of the sick, the old and the young.

Most Americans are neither stupid nor lazy. They figured out the truth about the Bush Cartel and got organized and got all their non-voting friends, family members, and co-workers to register and vote (the Democrats blew the Bushites away in new voter registration in 2004, nearly 60/40), and produced a huge turnout, the biggest in history, with most new voters, Independent voters and Nader voters voting for Kerry, and voted the Bushites out of office, overwhelmingly--despite relentless propaganda by Bush's lapdog press. That's pretty smart, I think. And not lazy.

Now what we have is a very poorly informed, deeply puzzled, disenfranchised, disempowered and somewhat depressed populace who badly need the help of those of us who have figured out what's wrong--a fraudulent election SYSTEM, that must be repaired NOW, and can only be repaired at the state/local level.

People must surely be wondering by now about Bush's dismal approval ratings. Someone told me today that it had sunk to 35%!!!! It was at only 49% on his inauguration day--already unprecedented as to low approval for a recently "re-elected," 2nd term president--and was so low before the election that Zogby said he could not win (and was right!). This is in addition to 60% to 70% of Americans disapproving of every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic--including my favorite, 63% of Americans disapprove of torturing prisoners UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

The truth is that the Bush Cartel could not retain power without election fraud. And the fraud they committed in 2004 is going to become very apparent to most Americans, very soon, in my opinion.

It's a very tense time, because these people are desperate. They are so corrupt that they cannot afford to lose power--they would all soon be in jail if they do. So we may possibly see some desperate actions--or, short of that, some compromises to try to keep the heat off. And we're seeing some of that already. For instance, I picked up somewhere that there are actually some Republicans involved in a movement to shut down Guantanamo Bay, and in a movement to get the Bush Cartel to commit to a withdrawal schedule for Iraq; Republican Congress people are apparently hearing it from constituents on some of the more extreme Bush policies. Also, the Downing Street memo, the "coingate" scandal in Ohio, the "lost" billions in Iraq, the federal deficit, their lies and falsified scientific reports about global warming and other dire matters are all finally gathering momentum toward a complete discrediting of this regime.

The lies will not stand. The truth will out. And our country and our democracy will make it through this, and come out an even better people because of it. Have faith! And don't give up on people who are traumatized and depressed, and uninformed, in denial or feeling defeated. Don't mistake those things for defects of character. (Sure, there are some lazy and stupid Americans--as in any population--but I simply don't believe that it's typical, and I think the facts bear me out.)

12. I stand by my original remark, there is an incredibly large percentage
of people in our country who are stupid and lazy.

Stupid in the fact that they can't (or refuse) to see what they blind obedience to a corrupt administration is costing them and will cost all future generations. This is a concept they are just too damn ignorant to understand. Of course, to begin to understand what the cost of their Kool Aid drinking behavior will be in the long run they would have to pry their heads out of their asses and make the effort to discover what the difference is between what these crooks say and what they really mean. And they'd also have to take the time and make an effort to understand what it is that made this country great, the legacy we inherited from the brave men and women who risked everything to come to this country and then when the opression from an earler King George became too great, to fight for their independence and freedom.

You make it sound like the people who support this corrupt cabal are just victims of circumstance, poor innocent bystanders who don't have a clue as to what they're doing. That's just plain wrong. These are the same people that believe Fred Phelps, Pat Robertson, Jerry Fallwell, and What's-His-Name Dobson are righteous men of God.

No, I stand by my original statement.

2. Publicly funded elections are the solution
Until elections are decided on equal footing in terms of whose message gets out, the confidence will continue to falter. It shouldn't just go to the best fund-raiser.

What could be as important as the integrity of the system we DEMOCRATICALLY choose our leaders. It may cost some money, but we've spent billions on less... like the President's war.

4. the next election will be worse than the last and
the republicans will gain even more power. along ago in a country we used to know, the fourth estate was our savior from the Christian zealots, now they no longer exist to save us but to save their masters. opposition to these zealots of christ has slowly been eliminated thru the years and soon there will be but a few left. even Jesus couldn't save himself from them...

8. Your posting is on fire tonight. Great article. Reality-based politics.
Dean will get an earful out there on his visit.

Toledo, who would have thought it? Well, actually, it may be the last real newspaper east of the Rockies (although the StarTribune is showing signs of life).

Thanks
