Has anyone had any luck using the DNC Ohio Report to stop DREs?
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 01:31 AM by Bill Bored
If there are any party faithful making decisions about voting machines, they had better pay attention to this.

Say what you will about the shortcomings of this report, but it's replete with evidence and commentary AGAINST DREs and in favor of Precinct Count Optical Scan.

So how many of you have shown it to your Democratic (or Republican) Election Officials and Legislators and what were their reactions? It seems that at least 50% of the country should be non-DRE since Dems are roughly half of registered voters, right? So who's selling us out? I'm pleased to say it does not appear to be the DNC at this point, at least on this particular issue.

So can we get the ER&D forum back on the front page now? ;)

1. I'm glad you mentioned this report.
I have to be sure to get it to my clerk. Do you have a link handy?

2. Wish I had a CLERK!

You can download it here:

Also, see this thread:

This should not have to be a partisan issue, but if there are still Democrats who are tolerating/advocating DREs, they need to answer to this report.

If you are going to make law, have a look at this thread too:

Good luck!

4. Who handles your elections?
I am dealing with clerks in the counties around me too. My county is one of the largest, so the clerk shares the info with other counties in the state. Hopefully, it will work and Diebold will not be approved.

Thanks so for the links.

5. Oh, THAT kind of clerk!
I thought you meant you had some lackey working for you, as if you were a judge or something. You never know!

Well, from reading some other comments here about this report, I got the distinct impression that it was junk. Glad I decided to read it for myself because it's not.

If the usual common sense arguments don't resonate with the Dems, maybe party loyalty will, and fortunately in this report the DNC has come out strongly against DREs. And they have evidence to back this up.

Their assertion that there was no widespread fraud in Ohio is another story. But we have to play the cards we've been dealt.

When talking to Dems, cite the opinion of the authors of this report against DREs.

When talking to Repubs, tell them that their votes may not be counted either for all we know.

Whatever it takes to convince people that these machines can't be trusted without lots of paper, auditing and where necessary, recounts.

Better, yet, let the voters fill out their own paper ballots and then scan, audit and recount those, and do away with DREs altogether.

How will Demcoratic election officials and legislatures answer to the people and the party when this issue is brought up? Let's use this report against them to get what we know is right.

As far as Ohio, it's clear that they have other issues.:(

7. LOL - lackey describes me - that's what I do.
Having once been a lackey for an elected clerk, I am well aware of the practical aspects of elections and I know why clerks in large counties began to look for other ways to count our votes. Hand counts just became too expensive, complicated and time consuming.

I will gladly pass on this information to folks that can use it.
Thanks again.

3. It helps
A friend of mine is in charge of purchasing new voting machines in a key part of NYState. I sent her the relevant sections of the junk DNC report dealing with voting machines. It is helping her in her arguments with other Dem politicians.

She is not a do-gooder by definition, just a good party official. After reading material I sent her from Ohio Honest Elections Campaign, the Conyers report and the DNC report she is now concerned about the voting machine issue. She is now trying to convince other party officials, in the practical language they understand, of the need to make wise decisions here. Party officials are simply not focused on this issue at all.

She tells me that having the DNC report helps her because it is considered "mainstream". That is why we need to reform the DNC -- whether they know it or not, what they do matters.

My point exactly!

BTW, if you can answer my other question about the Ohio recount law which can't be found in the law libraries, I'd be grateful. It's in one of your other threads. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll post a link later.

Thanks again!
