Registration of low-income voters to be punished

News Conference on House Leadership Plan to Restrict Low-Income Voter Participation as Condition of New Affordable Housing Grant Program

<snip>

A coalition of national organizations concerned with housing, community development, people who are elderly or disabled, child welfare, civil rights, voter participation, and rights of non-profits will hold a news conference to voice opposition to provisions in a compromise on H.R. 1461, the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act of 2005, reached by the House Leadership. These provisions will disqualify a non-profit organization from receiving grants from the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF), created by the legislation to develop new affordable housing for low income people, if the organization has engaged in any voter registration and other non-partisan voter participation work in the 12 months prior to application. Any non-profit organization that does receive a grant to develop affordable housing is also prohibited from engaging in these activities, even using private funds. These restrictions are not imposed on for-profit companies. The legislation is slated to go to the House floor next week.

4. These people really want to bring back property qualifications for voting
They don't often come out and directly say it, but if you listen to enough right wing radio it comes out sometimes.

10. White male property ownership and voting
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 02:18 AM by Ferret Mike
When the Constitution was written, only white male property owners (about 10 to 16 percent of the nation's population) had the vote. Over the past two centuries, though, the term "government by the people" has become a reality.

During the early 1800s, states gradually dropped property requirements for voting. Later, groups that had been excluded previously gained the right to vote. Other reforms made the process fairer and easier.

In 1810 the last religious prerequisite for voting is eliminated and in 1850 property ownership and tax requirements were finally eliminated.

16. It is true.
They are trying to do it in my community. A wing nut local politician recently challenged the voter registrations of 400 homeless voters on, get this, the premise that they didn't put there home address on the registration.

I can't believe they're doing this. Well, considering the nature of the right wing in Congress, I actually can. But it still turns my stomach.

In the House, to start with. Just ask them to make sure such language stays out of the bill.

17. They are trying to shave off a few more eligible voters.
A few here, a few there until enough people have been disenfranchised that they "win". Or at least have enough votes that they can steal comfortably.

The more stringent voter ID laws they are trying to push through are part of this, too. Again, shave a few eligible voters off the rolls, here, a few there........ The last elections have been close. It doesn't take much to tip the balance.

What I know is that there a lot of non-voting dems out there. And if I and other grassroots activists get out there and help educate these voters and get them to the polls, we can get this country back on track and give a voice to the people who most need it. The pugs know this too. And they are scared. They saw the enthusiasm in the grassroots last election cycle, and we will only get more organized and experienced with time. So they want to make it harder to register voters, and then harder for those people to vote.

Please contact your reps about this! I would be most appreciative. I want to turn the voters out, but they will make it harder for me if they can. :(

21. Scum. Anti-patriotic scum.
Next thing they'll require Boy Scouts to leaflet in poor neighborhoods with flyers saying "Don't vote." (I'm remembering my days in Boy Scouts when we went around town the weekend before election day hanging signs of doorknobs to get out the vote.)
