MARGARET KIMBERLEY: Ohio vote theft, now and forever

by Margaret Kimberley
November 18, 2005

On Election Day in Ohio, four ballot provisions that would have brought greater integrity to the elections process went down to defeat at the polls. Not only were all four defeated, but polls predicted that all four would either win, or be decidedly by thin margins.

Reform Ohio Now had initiated the four proposals. The proposals would have changed rules on campaign finance, established a legislative redistricting commission, allowed the option of voting by mail, and put electoral issues in the hands of an independent commission, beyond the reach of Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

Polling conducted by the Republican newspaper, the Columbus Dispatch, has a history of accurately predicting Ohio election results. Is it possible that the Dispatch pollsters suddenly lost their touch? Anything is possible, but the decisive loss of all four proposals by unexpected margins is highly improbable.

In November 2004 Republicans used a combination of schemes to insure victory in Ohio for George W. Bush. Some of the chicanery was decidedly low tech and simple. Black voting precincts didn't receive all of the voting machines they needed. More than 60 machines sat in storage while thousands of Ohioans waited on lines for hours to cast their ballots. Inevitably, some could not spend an entire day attempting to vote.

If the Dispatch polls were wrong, they were very wrong indeed. If the outcome is to be believed, every voter who was previously undecided on the ballot proposals had to vote no and many of those expressing support had to have changed their minds. Undecided voters usually remain undecided, skipping candidates and provisions that they find confusing or just not worthy of their attention. We are asked to believe that Ohio voters behaved unlike voters anywhere in the country.

It is more logical to assume that the electronic voting machines now in use in half of the state's counties were hacked to insure victory for the status quo. If that possibility is rejected, then we reject everything that has taken place since the November 2000 vote theft brought the Bush administration into being.

Since 2000 more Americans are at greater risk of being disenfranchised than at any time since the days of segregation. Provisional ballots that are not counted, substandard voting machines, and chicanery such as in Ohio that literally denied black voters the means to vote, all conspire to maintain the status quo that has established one party Republican rule.

This year the states of Georgia and Indiana passed laws requiring voters to possess official state identification in order to vote. To add insult to injury, Andrew Young, who makes a living billing himself as a trusted aide of Dr. King,

3. India: They Value Free and Fair Elections—More than our “leaders.”

I commented on Indian voting some time ago. They are passionate about politics there, occasionally a bit too passionate. They agreed on a low tech electronic voting system that is highly monitored and very inexpensive. Look at how they monitor the whole process.

:wtf: WE COULD DO THIS BUT NOT ONE MAJOR LEADER HAS THE WILL TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Countdown to Counting Begins; Security Extra Tight (in India)

Patna: November 21, 2005

With less than 24 hours left before the counting of votes begin on Tuesday morning, the state administration further beefed up security at all 42 ballot-counting centers in 38 districts with central officials being the first choice for the counting exercise, bank and insurance officials getting the second preference and state officials who will be deployed in case there is a shortage of manpower, officials in Patna said.

All the counting centers are under round-the-clock surveillance by para-military jawans and during the opening of the counting at Anugrah Narain College in Patna, the Election Commission (EC) special advisor K. J. Rao is personally going to be present there to monitor the entire exercise.

State chief election officer N. K. Sinha, while talking to media on Sunday said that each center will be restricted only to authorized officials and every movement will be captured on video cameras.

Each table where counting will be conducted will be equipped with video cameras and pictures will be taken of the the Electronic Voting Machines both before and after breaking the seal of it. The results will also be captured on cameras and all those involved in counting will also be photographed.

Election results will be announced on the Internet via Genesis and will also be flashed on screens outside the counting centers, Sinha said.

4. PA: “Now, I won’t know where it’s (my vote) is going”. Voter

No madam, you will now. But the voting machine company and the tabulator company will know just what’s happening. Try to ask them. Ask your elected official to ask them. They won’t be able to find out. Your leaders have given away democracy to the lowest bidder.

Pulling the metal levers on the mechanical voting machines Allegheny County has used since the 1960s gave Lois Hay the visceral sense that her vote was being counted.

With Allegheny County required by federal law to ditch the old machines and go high-tech in time for the spring primary, Hay, 70, of Shaler, isn't certain if computerized voting machines will give her the same satisfaction.

"When I pull that lever, it's a mechanized machine. I know where my ballot goes," Hay said. "Now, I won't know where it's going."

Hay was one of hundreds of people who tested various touch-screen and optical-scanner voting machines Thursday during a county-sponsored open house designed to get voter suggestions about which machines to buy for 1,314 voting districts.

<snip>

But she had a problem with one system she tried.

The machine printed her votes accurately on a darkened-oval sheet, but the scanner used to tally the ballot wrongly said she voted for too many people.

The county elections board -- Chief Executive Dan Onorato and County Councilmen Dave Fawcett, R-Oakmont, and John DeFazio, D-Shaler -- will decide which system to use.

They must act by Dec. 31 or lose $12.2 million in federal money for buying the new machines. The total cost will range from $15 million to $20 million, said Angela Chan, a general services employee.

6. CA: Time to Act in California—Screwing the Citizens.

Great moments in Democratic Party politics. Dem Secretary of State Shelly gives a speech about how electronic voting sucks. He is charged with an ethics violation and is persecuted visciously. He resigns but says the charge is bogus, he’s just more interested in protecting his family that wallowing in filth. Schwarzie gets to appoint a Republican Secretary of State. The State Legislature has to approve. This Democrat dominated body approves the idiot instead of fighting for Shelly or fighting against a political hack Republican. What is their major malfunction?

NAACP vote hearing details new flaws

Lawmakers learn of frustration, call for changes to county elections process

Jill Kelly, far right, director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, listens to poll worker Shirley Crenshaw discuss problems.

In the midst of three hours of testimony detailing confusion and frustration in Lucas County's Nov. 8 election, Eddie Small's story drew gasps from a panel of elected officials and NAACP leaders yesterday.

Mr. Small, who was a presiding judge in the Old West End, reported that at the end of election night the paper record was blank on the two busiest voting machines at the Girl Scouts of Maumee Valley.

The rovers who came to close his precinct told him they hoped the votes were stored on the memory cards or in the machines themselves, but did not appear as concerned as Mr. Small. He said he left with no confidence that the votes from those machines were counted.

Mike Badik, Lucas County Board of Elections deputy director, took notes, but did not speak during the NAACP-sponsored hearing in Warren A.M.E. Church on Collingwood Boulevard. Afterward, he said he had not heard of that problem until yesterday.

He hypothesized that the paper had been loaded in the machines upside down, which would have allowed the machine to appear to be working, but would not have produced a printed record. That, he said, disturbed him, but he would be far more disturbed if an investigation would reveal that voters' selections had not been stored on the memory cards.

That was one of dozens of investigations that poll workers, voters, elected officials, and NAACP leaders yesterday exhorted the elections board to undertake.
es until shortly before the election.

The system of roving workers to help close polls and take the votes downtown was time consuming.

Calls for an advisory council of veteran poll workers to review training materials drew applause.

Looking around the Lucas County Recreation Center, where more than 500 people ate breakfast and filled out surveys, Joseph Stader noted how many senior citizens worked at the polls. He worried that young people are not volunteering.

8. AR: Democrat & Republican Candidate Bicker over Voting Machine Choice
Sir, would you like a kick in the teeth or a shot to the temple? What a joke, arguing over Diebold and ES&S (owned by defense contractor SAIC). Maybe someone should represent the people and say, what about paper.

Voting machine choice stirs Ark. secretary of state race

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Secretary of State Charlie Daniels' choice to award Arkansas' voting machine contract to a Nebraska firm instead of a Texas-based company has caused a bit of controversy in the upcoming election for his post.

Daniels, a Democrat who previously served as state land commissioner, decided to award the contract to Election Systems and Software Inc. of Omaha, Neb., instead of Diebold Election Systems Inc. of Allen, Texas.

Diebold received higher rankings from a six-member evaluation committee, but its $17 million price tag was more than the Nebraska company's $15.2 million quote.

In response to Daniels' decision, Jim Lagrone of Bryant, a Republican who is running for Daniels' office in 2006, said he thinks it's interesting that the lobbyist for ES and S, Andy Crawford, is one of Daniels' friends.

"If this is true, it demonstrates what I have been saying all along as I have been talking to voters across Arkansas," Lagrone said. "When it comes to decisions made by the secretary of state and the management of the office, there are definite questions of trust and ethics."

Daniels denied Lagrone's claim, saying he is friends with many of the lobbyists in Little Rock, including Crawford and former state Rep. Courtney Sheppard, D-El Dorado, who represents Diebold.
