Here are Indiana figures..President/Senator
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 04:19 AM by shraby
Kerry's figures are closer to the Rep. Scott and Bush's figures are closer to the Dem. Bayh. There was a "glitch" the gave Kerry's numbers to the Libertarian Party in several counties, but the number of votes isn't that great..I think it was around 700 altogether. I'll go back and see if there are any figures on votes cast besides % of turnout.

1. Bayh doing much better than Kerry isn't in itself surprising
or in any way worthy of suspicion. We know that Scott voters are almost certainly Bush voters, and Kerry voters are almost certainly Bayh voters, but many people did vote for Bayh and Bush; if we see a larger than average Bush margin in a county with a larger than average Bayh margin, that is cause for concern.

4. No, It Would Be A Good Place To Increase Bush's Popular Vote Margin
Because everyone expected him to win there and maybe they wouldn't notice and extra 10,000 or so votes for Bush...

7. voting machines -- Simple pattern?
I'm wondering if there might be a simple pattern for the machines increasing the votes. Something like giving the top candidate (usually the incumbant) the skewed vote — or maybe just skewing all the votes toward the top. It would be harder to find in the code, rather than looking for any (R) in the pres/senate and skewing that way.

Like in the previous example, did Bayh and Bush both appear earlier in the selection list? How were the candidates listed in Venezuela? Or 2002 democratic primary in FL?

17. Indiana
There may be some suspicions about the governor's race, but there was no way Kerry could have made an impact in IN. Clinton was competitive but east coast liberals won't sell with the Bible Beaters. On the other hand, Evan Bayh's corpse/pet dog/stool sample could get elected here, but of course he is one of the most frequent democrats on Fox News (moderate).

18. Kerry did make an impact.
Marion County went blue for the first time since '64. Pretty big deal for those of us in Indy.

19. A Suggestion.... Convert No's To % & Sort Data
Shraby, this is fantastic but a bit hard to read.

This data will be much more useful if you add a couple of columns to it. & Sort it.

Add a few columns in a spreadsheet
1. Calculate % of the vote figures Bush/Kerry Dem/Rep Senate for each of counties.
2. Calculate the difference between them i.e. Bush-Kerry Rep-Dem
3. Then calculate a figure that shows the difference in the two races ie. the Presidential GOP majority - the Senate GOP Majority
4. Then sort the table by this final field.

You will end up with a table that shows which counties show the biggest differences in the races. And then you have some trends you can write a commentary on.

20. The following shows an example of what I am talking about.
The following shows an example of what I am talking about above.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=19390&mesg_id=19390

See the sorted table at the bottom..

In it we see...
IND --|-- 1474475 --|-- 1242372 --|-- 232103 --|-- 18.7% --|-- 5945720 --|-- 68.7%

Bush gained 18.7% on his 2000 figs there. In that respect it is smack bang in the middle of the red states in terms of Bush vote gain. And near the national average.
