Barry Levinson: 2004 Exit Poll Discrepancy inspired "Man of the Year"!
Just heard him (with Robin Williams) on Hardball, responding to an audience question about his fears about electronic voting. He said that watching the vote totals diverge so far from the exit polling, and all the reports about computer "glitches", inspired him to write the movie.

Mr. Levinson: DU thanks you. Best wishes for boffo box office, and thanks for helping, from the people once labeled tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists.

:woohoo:

8. Here here! EVERYBODY go see it. Must have a HUGE opening weekend
so the talking heads will have no choice but to talk about it, and so it will remain in the theatres longer! This weekend, everybody, grab your Granny and go!

17. Don't forget "Wag the Dog"
One of the greatest political satires of the last decade, and it holds up so well today.

I have never seen "Diner", I will have to look into that one.

18. I hadn't forgotten
In fact they talked about it, but Diner is a gem. It has nothing to do with politics. :)

2. Watching here also; cannot wait to see this movie! Despite the
humor, maybe people will finally take election fraud seriously.

3. Did you see Tweet? Robin said when 3rd world countries' exit polls differ
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 06:44 PM by blm
widely from the results - we know there's fraud.

Tweety was nodding in agreement, but HE was a big part of the corpmedia who was poo-pooing the idea of there even being such a discrepancy and never acted as if it were a strange thing, at all.

The media started in IMMEDIATELY with their values voters who won the election storyline and that's what we were fed night and day for the next 4 months till Schiavo proved that wasn't the case.

5. Did you see them on Bill Maher last week?
Robin Williams and Chris?

Chris actually said he didn't see what good a piece of paper which showed how you voted would do if it was just a receipt, and went on to voice his concern that people wouldn't want something which wouldn't be anonymous and showed everyone how you voted. He said something like: So, what's the point of walking out of the polling place with a paper receipt? Why would you want to show people how you voted?

Richard Clarke had to point out to him that you would actually put the paper in a BALLOT BOX, not take it home with you.

He really lives in a dream world.

7. He was told many times about the ballot box for the paper and he will come
back another day and go thru the exact same spiel about your boss knowing who you voted for - he's pathological like that.

10. That's how you tell the difference people who just do their material
(over and over and over) and people who actually think.

22. Exactly - it's his "SCHTICK" that he falls back on, instead of listening
and thinkiing about the information presented to him.

12. That chunk of his brain is stuck in a machine politics time warp.
My boss is standing over my shoulder looking at who I vote for??

Read up, Chris, you're smarter than this.

15. To be fair there have been many people who have called for a receipt
I personally think the idea was started by someone opposed to election reform efforts hoping that people would grasp on to the idea therefore making it easier to discredit them. Unfortunately the strategy has worked, as believe it or not there have been many supporters of election reform who have grasped on to this idea without fully thinking through the implications.

Giving somebody a receipt would kill the idea of a secret ballot, and would undoubtedly result in widescale abuse. People could say something like "if you can prove you voted for this person we will reward you" or you could have people forcing others to show them their receipt and if they voted for the "wrong" person they could potentially be punished.

The idea of a receipt is an incredibly bad idea that undermines calls for real election reform, and I think people like Matthews know that so they attack that idea while ignoring the good ideas.

There are some genuinely good people who want a paper receipt, but I don't think most of them have really thought the issue through. We want paper BALLOTS not a receipt.

19. I think Chris
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 09:13 PM by Patsy Stone
doesn't think.

He knows the score, and he wasn't an idiot on Maher. He knows Diebold sucks, he knows they're crooked, he was agreeing with everything everyone said about the vulnerability, and then he came out with that receipt thing. I think he just needs to be educated. And we're just the ones to do it.

I'm not sure it's a concerted effort to be dim on his part and I think he could understand, I just don't think he hath the capacity to inquire.

23. I will be attending a Q&A tonight with Barry Levinson in Ridgefield,
CT after a showing of the movie. If I get a chance to ask a question, I will pass on all the thanks from the DU "Election Reform" group.

I am very excited about this movie. It is just what we need to reach more people about this critical issue.

27. So it's "based on actual events"? Why not name it "Path to election 2004"?
ABC/Disney, I know, whould have no problem with that.
