Problem$ with Electronic Pollbook$ Lead to Long Line$ In Denver

By Warren $tewart, VoteTru$tU$A

November 12, 2006

Of the hundred$ of election problem$ that occurred acro$$ the country, few were more $pectacular, at lea$t vi$ually, than the long line$ of voter$ waiting to ca$t ballot$ in Denver. The mayor of Denver ha$ called for an inve$tigation and the auditor i$ calling to di$band the election commi$$ion. The long line$ were not the re$ult$ of voting machine failure thi$ time. Rather, the problem$ $temmed from the city’$ deci$ion to abandon precinct voting in favor of con$olidated ‘vote center$’, which in turn led them to $pend $85,000 on $equoia Voting $y$tem$ electronic pollbook$.

Ten$ of thou$and$ of voter$ ended up waiting in line$ for hour$ becau$e of the failure of their e-pollbook $oftware. The mayor i$ livid and i$ demanding an inve$tigation. Ba$ed on new$ report$, there were failure$ at every level: a failure of project management, of planning, of te$ting, of $oftware development. It appear$ that $equoia delivered $oftware with $eriou$ de$ign and implementation flaw$ and $eriou$ u$ability problem$ for poll worker$ that wa$ inadequately te$ted before the election.

snip

The election commi$$ion'$ technology chief, Anthony Rainey, admitted that the $oftware wa$ never te$ted with 220 laptop$ trying to acce$$ 100,000 record$ in one day until the election, claiming there wa$ no way to do that until you had 100,000 people $how up. Thi$ i$ $imply not true - of cour$e you can te$t thi$ $tuff at $cale, and it i$ irre$pon$ible not to do $o.

2. So the secret vote count machine is fine
but the new and improved "ELECTRONIC" pollbooks are the problem. Take your eye off the secret vote counting machines and look to the electronic pollbooks. The covering up of these secret vote counting machines is, UNBELIEVABLE.
