this raises red flags to me: easy enough for the machine company to withold nontampered machines for just such a purpose.

At least it sounds as though they intend to. However, I shall be more suspicious if they don't find something than if they do.

And I agree with your approach to the findings. They picked at least a couple of machines for Friday's test that had high undervote rates in the actual election. If those machines don't show a problem then I will be very suspicious.
