Help Watch Over Florida's November 2008 Election

FLORIDA VOTERS COALITION: HELP WATCH OVER OUR NOVEMBER 2008 ELECTION

Join the Multi-State Post-Election Audits Observation Project

Florida’s current audit laws provide only the most minimum audit of paper ballots—even going so far as to leave our state’s 2008 Presidential election unaudited. In other words, even though we will be voting on paper ballots, the law doesn’t allow us to realize the benefit of having a “paper trail” by allowing routine checks of a meaningful sample of ballots to confirm that our new voting machines are counting votes correctly.

Florida Voters Coalition is recruiting people just like you to help us observe and document the audit process.

Florida Voters Coalition is leading a landmark report beginning November 2008 that will be a multi-state, multi-year observation study of the conduct of post-election audits, comparing a number of states that currently have audit provisions (most do not). Partners will include other non-partisan state organizations, national organizations, elections officials, and academic partners. It will report on compliance with current regulation, compare procedures state-to-state, report on the cost of audits in the states, and provide reliable, uniform data on other aspects of post-election audits vital to further develop this essential component of election administration.

The vital information collected by this project will assist efforts to improve post-election audits legislation in Florida and nationwide as the final report will be published nationwide.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All audits will take place during the week AFTER election day, so will not interfere with pollworker duty or other election day activities.

Our goal is to recruit teams of two to four people in all 67 Florida counties to help watch over the audit process and document what takes place during the audit on forms we provide.

If you’re interested in participating in this important study, please contact Florida Voters Coalition at info@floridavoters.org
