17. Did you all hear about the Fox boycott??
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 10:03 PM by propagandafreegal
People are calling cable companies and blocking FOX then sending emails...

>>LET'S SEE THE STOCKS PLUMMET- FEED YOUR
STRENGTH

If you, too, have had enough with the FOX news channel, please
read below. This action will make your voice heard while simply
choosing not to watch the station can not.

I have decided to make a political statement. I called my
Satellite TV provider and asked them to remove Fox News from my
television. Since the election I have wanted to stick my head
out of a window of a tall building and shout I can't take it
anymore but I soon came to realize that there is a better and
easier way to send a message to Rupert Murdoch and his blathering
bunch at Fox News and that was to simply make them disappear from
my life.

I called my cable TV provider and had Fox News deleted from my
television. It was simple I called the Repair Department at
Comcast and said I wanted to be Foxless in America. I then wrote
an email to the following: Reed Nolte VP Investor Relations for
News Corporation (the parent company of Fox News) at
rnolte@newscorp.com and Brian Lewis, Senior VP Corporate
Communications for Fox News at brian.lewis@foxnews.com and to top
it off I copied rmurdoch@newscorp.com. I told them that I cannot
take the Fox distortion and biased presentation of the news any
longer and that they ought to inform their sponsors that there
are millions like me. I can't tell you the immense satisfaction I
gained from becoming Foxless in America.

I am asking you to follow me in this protest and let it be heard
by all that want to control what we all see and hear. This could
be a way to have your voice heard-Become Foxless in America. We
can start a movement if each of you send this email to all the
others you know who are fed up with Fox News.

If you have to have a number of posts to start a thread, it's probably smaller than you think. I started a thread before 25 posts if I remember things correctly. It took a bit longer before being able to use the private message feature - I admit to bugging admin a few times about it!:-)

I and many others are calling our cable companies and having the Fox News Channel removed from our homes. It should be called the Bush Administration Channel.Fair and balanced, what a joke.Your channel is just as responsible for our dead soldiers in Iraq as Bush is.Their blood and the blood of the Iraqi people is on your hands.I don't know how you people sleep at night.

50. The Big picture
I think is not destroying a news network. Face it, the corporations even before the giants took over hated the unprofitable public news requirements. Some felt pride even so in making them so competent and staffed they could tear into the parent company and sponsors with impunity.

But now I think they can shrug off losses in the news sector and still be ahead of the old public service sumphole. And still serve their need for corporate propaganda and their political cronyism.

What they CANNOT do is lose, network and business-wide the support of sponsors and businesses who need advertising outlets. Maybe THEY don't need to lose more significant customer bases and profits for the sake of media corporate ideology and self interest. This is what really brings down crooked media. Not just losing market shares of the audience but OFFENDING and dividing and radicalizing the public that connects the product to unpleasant associations that imply political support. And political support that is ruining many of the same business advertisers.

The battle is less direct then than it appears and we have more prudent allies than we imagine although many ideologically and politically hope for the success of FOX propaganda. When it doesn't work and turns to poison, that is a very different matter and threatens their survival, not their profit margin.

to get fox blocked you say???

Edit to say: I just called Comcast and they said they can't block it from their end. The way they usually do it is to put a trap on the line and they don't have a trap for Fox News just adult programming. How are other people getting Comcast to do this?

63. I just got off the phone from Comcast...
to get Fox News removed. The customer service rep I talked to was very nice & told me the same - we must block it ourselves. I expressed my disgust at the biased content, the pro-war pro-killing, smartass hosts, etc. She kind of opened up & told me she was 61, never watches Fox & agreed with me on all points. Naturally she said to write Fox and even offered to give me the address & phone number. She said my comments to Comcast would just sit "in my file" and wouldn't be noticed." But I'll bet if enoungh subscribers do what I did eventually SOMEONE at Comacast will notice.

82. Will the satellite co. do that? Remove just one station?
I thought you had to take the whole package???? You couldn't pick and choose. Not so?

I'd imagine they'd just tell me to set a "block" on it, since satellite has the blocking feature on its box, usu. for parents to block risque channels so the kids don't watch them. Or maybe that's what the satellite co. did....do the block for you remotely?

10. The Nashua Advocate (Last Post)
I've posted this message in two other threads as well, but I thought I'd post it here, too, as a final plug for a news source I think many here might appreciate. Note: We frequently quote Olbermann, too!

***

"I am the News Editor for the Nashua Advocate. On the Advocate's refurbished site, only Election 2004 stories are currently being featured (and this will continue through December and, if need be, beyond). I thought this would be a good place to mention the Advocate and provide the website to the users of Democratic Underground:

http://www.nashuaadvocate.blogspot.com /

Keep up the good work, all of you! The truth, whatever it may be, will ultimately rise to the top. It always does.

The News Editor

P.S. The Advocate encourages user feedback: feel free to comment on any stories you see in The Advocate (using the 'comment' link at the bottom of each story); we will be running only the most recent and most interesting 'new story' information we can possibly find/investigate. Websites and blogs may link freely to the Advocate (of course) and are warmly encouraged to do so. The more news the better!"

Sorry... didn't mean to cuss... but I am so happy, I'm busting a gut!

My entire office now watches Keith - whether they be Freeper or Friend - because they've heard me and a few others talking about the recount, the fraud, etc. and they haven't seen it on the news. So... they ask... and I say, "Oh, it's not on some leftie sight. The mainstream media just sucks now except for Olbermann. You guys ought to watch him." Then the men, especially, say, "That's Keith Olbermann, as in Keith and Dan from ESPN?" "Yep," I say, "Who knew he was so damn smart on news of other matters?"

20. That idiotic site dedicated to trying to get Keith fired
posted that his ratings were abyssmally low.

What they failed to mention, of course, is that his show is only eight months old. Therefore, he's doing A-OK if you ask me (and his sponsors and his bosses).

So, yeah, my faith in reporting is being restored almost single-handedly by Keith Olbermann (I'm a former reporter, btw). I think it's absolutely funny that I have such a crush... erm... such high respect for a man for simply doing his job well. LOL! ;)

22. Looks like the start of a beautiful trend...
This, along with Air America kicking Bill O'Reilly's ass in the Portland market, make me feel like there is hope for a Liberal media afterall. Air America has added 2 stations in Oregon in the past 2 months... the market is growing. I could really see a Liberal News Channel in the next couple of years. I can just see the tag line now: We're like Fox... only our news is true and blue!

28. no money to Time-Warner cable
The only TV service available to me is T-W cable. I simply refuse to pay that sorry company one cent for TV. I'd rather use rabbit ears.

The only cable news channel I every watch, and that rarely, is MSNBC. I have watched Olbermann a few times for the BBV scandal.. but even that show is hard to take.

I do watch BBC World on PBS and every so often sections of Lehrer and the big three... just to see if I can take it. Quite often I just have to turn it off and go for entertainment.

Thus, most of the news and commentary I read is online.. from sources that definitely make sense to read. Too bad they can't get airtime in neofascist America....

33. Wrong Thread, I know, but...
I'm a long-time lurker, first time poster. A few questions...

A. Why do you refer to Bush as "*"?

B. Roughly how many DU'ers believe (as I do) that the Repub machine stole yet another election?

C. What is the general Democratic viewpoint on non-conservative Libertarians?

D. What is the best way to counter ultra-conservative fundie Christies arguments that are based solely on the Bible?

E. In the same vein as D, how to most effectively say, "SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!" to those asshole Repubs who say, "Get over it! America wants Bush to fulfill God's plan."

F. Not a Q, but, I write for a college newspaper, and I want a sure-fire way to wake up the Bushy sheep, and make them realize that they were lied into a war of choice, and refute this nonsense about moral values and "Fighting over there so we don't have to here."

G. How can I most effectively make my case that it is hypocritical to "Protect the unborn" while supporting the death of American soldiers and innocent Iraqi civilians?

Gracias por su tiempo,

MojoXN

Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 10:39 AM by NCevilDUer
A. * is the first, and only, pres. selected by the Supremes, so will always have a * by his name in lists of presidents.

B. I'd guess a solid majority.

C. Whatever floats your boat. We're the real 'big tent'.

D. With bible quotes -- Sermon on the Mount works well.

E. Well, 'Shut the fuck up!' works for me.

F. Remind the students about the loss of Pell grants, which encourages them to look at the military to pay for their school. It's an economic draft. And a real draft is still coming, is my bet.

G. Don't try. You can reason with unreason. They are lost souls.

39. Hi Mojo!
I'd like to suggest a different tactic for "D" -- because 99% of their arguments are based solely on Leviticus, not on the New Testament. Read the Bible (even if you're not a Christian, I'm not) and it'll give you a BUTTLOAD of ammunition to counter them with. And they just HATE HATE HATE it when you quote the Bible back at them to beat them up!

And, welcome to DU! :hi:

of us good guys started fighting back - with any teeth. They have become all too accustomed to arguing with people who shoot blanks, and cave all too easily to catcalls of "GET OVER IT!" or "SORE LOSERMAN!" or "WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA?!?!" or (as I personally discovered) "WHERE WERE YOU 9/11?!?!?!?" (note this was not "where were you ON 9/11.")

BTW - about that Leviticus stuff, here is the letter that originally went around, and now has been updated as a Dear president bush version:

http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~susan/joke/laura.htm

an open letter to Dr. Laura
J. Kent Ashcraft
May 2000
Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21 . In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.
Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

I also heard some reference (I forget where, now) about not wanting to base my life or my conduct on the dictates of a handful of second century sheepherders - or in the case of the Old Testament, I suppose that would be nomads from about 2,000 BC.

They have NO comeback when you start presenting them with cold hard facts based on cold harsh reality. Most of 'em will get mad and lock their already-closed minds. Some will heap abuse and invective on you and send you emails full of hatred. Consider these from one Paul Craig Roberts, who considers himself a true conservative, but sure sounds a lot like one of us...

What Became of Conservatives?

And finally, another "religious" invocation that I saw recently, here at the good ol' DU:

The 23rd Sigh
Bush is my shepherd, I dwell in want.
He maketh logs to be cut down in national forests.
He leadeth trucks into the still wilderness.
He restoreth my fears.
He leadeth me in the path of international disgrace for his ego's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of pollution and war,
I will find no exit, for thou art in office.
Thy tax cuts for the rich and thy media control, they discomfort me.
Thou preparest an agenda of deception in the prescence of thy religion.
Thou anointest my head with foreign oil.
My health insurance runneth out.
Surely megalomania and false patriotism shall follow me all the days of thy term.
And my jobless son shall dwell in my basement forever.

Praise the Lord.

By their hatred, ignorance, fear and loathing, misspellings, and poor syntax, shall ye know them.

No wonder they identify so closely with georgie-poo...

And WELCOME TO DU, Mojo! Speak truth to power! And NEVER let them get the last word.

Something similar to a portion of your post constantly annoys the shit out of me. How in the HELL can people claim they voted for Bush because he has better morals?? Do YOUR morals tell you that it was ok to "elect" a man who had NO PROBLEM whatsoever with the death penalty? They say they VALUE life and that every life is precious- hence the argument that abortion is a sin in etc. Add to that the war issue & the fact that I guess it is a-ok to vote for a man who is responsible for sending troops into a country we didnt belong in. Is it ok that he heads an administration that tortures people in Guantanamo? That violates human rights issues left and right?

Yeah- I guess it's respect for all life.... unless its someone that you dont care about.

89. THanks Dr Ron
I especially enjoyed this part of the text:

OJR: In your gut feeling, what do you think all the irregularities and recounts in Ohio and Florida will show, in the end?

KO: I can guarantee that they'll show that this Rube Goldbergian system of different voting laws, voting equipment, voting auditing we have in this country can't be taken for granted any more and must be standardized nationally, or we face a real threat to the democracy. As John Zogby said on the show the other night, yeah, it's great that 80% of the public thinks the election was absolutely legitimate. But, my God, that means one in five don't. That's an incredibly dangerous truth. We have to fix that.

Practically speaking, I suspect that the Ohio recount and whatever happens in Florida will not alter the outcome -- although I don't think that's the billion-to-one shot people assume. I'd say it's closer to 8:1. Ohio really, really messed up. And I think we'll see a lot of proved computerized disasters, and a lot of inappropriate partisanship.

YYYY,

Great!

Could you block the Fox News Channel (61) from our home lineup? I consider their slanted journalism and misinformation to be a danger to our democracy.

I urge you to read the recent Pew Research report which found Fox viewers to be the most misinformed news viewers in America and research by the Program on International Policy Attitudes, based at the University of Maryland in College Park, which found that "80 percent of those who said they relied on Fox News .... believed at least one of the three misperceptions . You can decide for yourself whether this channel really serves the best interests of your other subscribers.

But today I turned on Crossfire because I do like James Carville--haven't watched since before the election and who is the guest host but Jerry Falwell.

Why in the world was he on there? I almost threw up when he talked about being married for 47 years and has never touched another woman. OK fine--I don't care but it really demonstrates the incredible RIGHT turn CNN has taken.

The recent fracas has made me kind of sad. I wish people would remember a couple of weeks ago we were ready to have this man's baby because he was the only one covering this story. Even during the election, he was one of the only bright spots telling the truth. He has helped more than he has hurt.

No matter who turns out to be wrong or right in the other threads, I hate to see us trash someone who has been giving us hope. Concerns are one thing, but if we could just refrain from flaming the man until we know what the facts are. And that goes for both sides really. Several of us have had enough people for lunch lately as it is. Some have been so quick to jump on the "traitor!" bandwagon. I just want us to get our facts straight first, is all.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

I don't know what's going on & why Olberman is being critical of Bev Harris, but here's Bev's response on her web site. I'm not so sure i trust those MSNBC producers.

Last updated: Thursday Dec. 2, 2004 -- Black Box Voting requests retraction from Keith Olbermann, along with an explanation of why MSNBC alleged such an untruth. We have given Olbermann the opportunity to correct his factually flawed editorial by having Bev Harris appear on his show.

Contrary to Olbermann's assertions, neither he nor his staff have ever spoken with Harris to ask her to show anyone the Volusia County tapes. Producers now admit that they have not spoken to Harris at all since November 8, when they cancelled a scheduled appearance on Countdown. Harris did not come to Florida until November 12, when investigations in Volusia County began. Both Executive Producer Izzy Povich and producer Katy Carp admitted they have not been able to get hold of Harris at all since Nov. 8.

When Harris asked about Olbermann's mischaracterizations of the LePore incident (which he characterized as "crashing" "rushing" and "screaming.") Izzy Povich said that they took those details "from other news sources." When asked by Harris, she declined to name any of the news sources. When Harris stated that she has always been, and was still willing to come on the show, Povich said they are not interested in having Harris as a guest, but only in getting copies of the videotapes.

Harris arranged for the owner of the Volusia County videotapes to call Povich and offer her the tapes. Povich admitted that producers had never tried to call the owners of the tape. The tape was offered to Povich by its producers, who called to make the tape available, but Olbermann's producers have so far not returned the call.

Olbermann's producers had earlier asked Harris to appear on the Countdown show, twice, on Nov. 5 and Nov. 8. Each time, after Harris cleared her schedule to appear and shortly before the show, Olbermann's producers canceled the appearance without explanation.

Harris showed the Volusia County tapes to CNN cameramen, but Harris has never been asked to show any Volusia County materials to any MSNBC producers, or NBC producers. The NBC local affiliate in Palm Beach County asked for the LePore videotape, which Harris promptly provided. The LePore tape was aired on both Orlando and Palm Beach County NBC affiliates on Dec. 1.

Also contrary to Olbermann's claims, Harris is not making a documentary, but the makers of the Votergate documentary, an independent team who captured the Volusia County trash incident on film, are eager to interview Keith Olbermann on camera to ask him why he produced this report.

98. Oh, don't bring that into this thread.
Seriously. Go find the threads titled "Discuss Bev Harris and Olbermann here" or something like that, and read them all to get caught up.

Don't post that in this thread, though, or it'll get locked.

Olbermann's a Ratings Whore!

If Bush manages to hold onto OHIO, Olbermann's going to be the first one on the "I knew he won all along" bus.

120. Ratings whore?
Up2Late,

Keith is the only one in the MSM who has taken on this issue. And if it helps him
get some ratings so what. Like him or not Olbermann, is a man who is manly enough to stand up to "the man." Can you dig what I am saying man?

116. Aren't They All?
Don't mean to generalize...I suppose it'd be difficult to stand up to the Man who butters your bread and allows you to pay rent or mortgage...I once worked for a health insurance company- and it was pretty damn hard to stand up to the powers that were. It helped to have a medical director with 'nads. But I digress...Keep up the good work, everyone. I have been disheartened though I know that is a luxury we can't afford. I am glad to hear this Keith is at least covering the voter fraud. There has not been ONE article here in the Mile High City.
I don't have cable. In fact, don't really watch T.V. except PBS -but will spread the word about the Faux News boycott! Gotta love the hypocrisy- Murdoch supports Shrub's Regime and in spirit promotes the Religious Reich, then airs shows like "Desperate Housewives" and other debased television fair. Apparently, ratings for these shows are high from Salt Lake to Little Rock- all across Red America. Hmmmm...

117. His blog today
ended on a heart-wrenching note:

-----------
"Threats against myself or my staff will not be tolerated. We are not only busting our humps on the voting irregularities beat, but we remain the only mainstream news organization to continue to cover this vital story. These are my people — they are running professional risks I can’t begin to describe — and I will stand up for them, first, last, and always."
-----------

Fact is, they ARE the only msm that has been covering this story from the get-go, speculative or otherwise. It is, imo, in no small thanks to KO and his staff that other media sources are also taking up the fight.

Uncovering this story - "vital" to quote KO - is truly dangerous, and not in a professional sense alone. Just days ago Keith posted with clear poignancy and concern about the plane crash that ultimately cost the Ebersoll family the life of their young son. The questions surrounding the crash are upsetting and troublesome. That Olbermann and his staff have been able to continue their journalistic endeavors to get to the heart of vote fraud with this incident weighing so heavily on their minds should speak volumes as to their integrity.

Thank you for starting this thread. It did my heart good to see all the positive comments.

123. Directv
Hi. I thought about calling Directv and trying to get Fox removed, but then I found out it was bought by Murdoch. Has anyone who has Directv been successful in doing this? I can block it. I am also now a Nielson person I guess - they are doing a study of people with Tivo-s and they picked me as one of the people. I don't have to do anything - like record what I watch - they get if from the Tivo. Countdown is on my season passes now.

125. Easily Impressed Aren't You
The real story is the work that Bev Harris is doing, not Olbermanns "bravery" in reporting it. Give me a Break. He's treated Ms Harris with none of the respect she deserves and won't even have her on the show, probably because she's not cute, blond or famous enough. But, they're more than happy to use the film footage she has proving voting irregularities, rather than send a real news team to investigate on their own. Lazy journalism!
Read www.blackboxvoting.org and see that maybe Keith isn't such a great guy afterall.
Keep your eyes open people and quit falling for the media wh*res. MSNBC, owned by G.E., purveyor of Weapons of Mass Destrution! Who's your daddy?

126. Bev Harris
Bev Harris' explation of what happened with Countdown has been scrubbed from her site, but the diatribe against her by Olbermann remains on his. This is what was redacted at blackboxvoting:
