Just saw Star Trek
Thought the characters were great but the story was weak. I would get rid of Spock actor though. Thought he was weakest.

Anyone else have a take?

1. About the same ...

It's a lot of flash and style with weak substance.

But, flash and style sell, so that's what they put out.

I can't say I expected much different than that, so I wasn't disappointed. It's an entertaining movie.

Oh, and I'll say again ... I HATE that style of camera work. It worked for Cloverfield because of what Cloverfield was, but it does not translate well, imo.

6. The best ST movie so far
Note that comments are contradictory in "critique", which is c/w reviewers of most movies. But I thought it was the best Star Trek movie so far. Everyone I know has loved it. We are viewers, and most of us ST fans - not pseudo-reviewers.

Wonder if it's so good a lot of people will pay to see it?

2. I will be seeing it at 2 p.m.
I will give an opinion later. Star Trek movies seem to be best when even numbered. :)

3. Spoiler alert; this was Star Wars not Star Trek
everything was going fine until the 'chance' meeting between kirk and spock.

5. It wasn't a bad movie at all
The guy playing McCoy was wonderful and Chekhov was great too.

I just thought they didn't need the complicated story line.

Zachary Quinto totally nailed Spock as he should have been played as a young adult. Most of the other actors were also very good.

SPOILER: "Spock + Uhura 4eva" was a bit too much to believe, especially in light of TOS' "Amok TIme" ; disregarding T'Pring, the 7 year cycle etc.

Some other good and bad stuff I can't mention without spoiling too much, but overall a fantastic movie, as good as ST II.

I don't know what the poster meant by comparing to Cloverfield. I saw nothing that resembled that very poor film.

For very good effect was the high attention to detail and continuity. For example, all the litter of crashed/blown up space ships actually obey the laws of motion. If a guy got punched in the face, you could see the bruise formed the next day, the swelling the next day, and gradual fading over the next week - something very rare in movies.

The story was pretty good, not great. Maybe 4x as twisted as a TOS episode, with just a few surprises.

8. WRT "Amok TIme" and T Pring and the 7-year mating cycle.......
It's a whole new "ALTERNATE" universe, T Pring probably died with her planet and the Vulcans will become extinct if they don't get it on more often than every 7 years!

9. Eric Bana was excellent.
He's getting overlooked because everyone is comparing how the new actors did in the Enterprise crew roles (Karl Urban did the best job, I thought). But I really enjoyed Bana's portrayal of Nero.

I liked a lot of the little easter eggs referencing the old Star Trek (green women, the "red shirt" death, Admiral Pike in a uniform that harks back to the first Star Trek movie, Chekov's difficulty saying the letter "V"...).

Also, did anyone else recognize Deep Roy as Scotty's sidekick before seeing the credits?

12. You know what's funny?
I identified Scotty's alien sidekick as Deep Roy on sight, even through the make-up. I think it's his mouth shape that is instantly recognizable.

I'm not a trekkie but I do consider myself a trek fan.

The "Chance meeting" as mentioned above with the old Spock and young Kirk was silly...other than that it was good.

Very good picks for a new crew overall with Simon Pegg as Scotty a winner as well as the fellow who did bones. I thought John Cho (He's just so obviously Korean in physical appearance) was a little weak for Sulu (Takai is so very Japanese) but my love of "Roldy" pulled me through.

Chekov as a sort of childhood prodigy was kind of cool. He always was younger in appearance than the others anyways.

Quinto did a good Spock. If they follow through with more of these he's going to be an "angrier moodier" Spock. Nimoy did a great older Spock ("I am Spock." Love that line.) who has grown to accept who he is and is capable of showing a little happiness and emotion without not appearing to be Vulcan.

Thought it was wonderful. And Zachary Quinto was excellent as Spock. I really liked his "back" story.

22. I thought Zachary Quinto looked like Spock physically but
didn't catch his mannerisms as well as some of the other actors captured their predecessors' mannerisms.

18. Awesome
I was stunned by the fact that they actually destroyed Vulcan- I never imagined that they would be so bold as to do something like THAT!!! All of the new actors and actresses handled their respective roles magnificently and I was glued to the movie the entire time. The only thing that kind of bothered me was the Spock/Uhura scenes. I never really saw them as being an "item" and Uhura's behavior towards Spock seemed a bit out of place/unprofessional but overall that was a rather minor quibble I had with the movie. Everything else was gravy.

20. if I feel I want to watch a movie again right after I
just finished it, then its a good one for me. but not this one.
such a disappointment. the actors themselves were fine and capable.
the story and its direction values weren't. glad others enjoyed it though.
hope the next one can recover some good story and film making, hopefully
without these bologna writers and director.

21. The actors were terrific
But...the story?! It's a Generation Z sop, where the teenagers are entitled to run the Enterprise because they're magically talented...and ends with the gratuitous execution of a villain who's literally seconds away from death anyway. I suppose that's acceptable in a culture that can make SAW a hit and regards the physical torture of suspects as a matter worthy of debate, but it's such a profound reversal of the philosophy of the original series that I'm still having trouble getting my jaw to snap back into place.
