So atheists don't believe in better living through chemistry? |
|
I look through the responses in this thread and am saddened at the anti-science attitudes. No wonder the U.S. is falling behind in science and technology, which are rejected by both theists and atheists. I live on beer, wine, cheese, and crackers. These are all cultured foods.

12. beer, wine, cheese, and crackers are even served to folks that are religious! :-) |
|
and even religious folks that are educated and scientists types working the "you have to be smart" fields for 45 years have been seen eating those symbols of culture!
:-)

6. I have absolutely so problem with science..... |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 07:45 AM by ClintonTyree
I do however have a BIG problem with fundie nut-jobs. One requires testing, hard data, facts and proof. The other requires nothing more than belief and self delusion. See if you can figure out which is which. I'm probably the most outwardly atheistic person you'll find at DU and I have tremendous respect for science. Religion is static. Theists believe the same thing now as they did almost 2000 years ago. Science, on the other hand, is always changing, challenging itself to find the core truths and mysteries of the universe. Your statement is "fundamentally" wrong. ;)

8. I know what I would tell you if I was a theist. |
|
When you get it right the first time, you don't have to change your mind.
But I am not a theist, I am probably not an atheist, I am probably an agnostic.
If there is a God, he/she/it has done so little for me and this world, why should I care?
A God would have to earn my respect, not me earn the Gods respect. No I don't have a big respect for authority, how did you guess?

11. wtf is the theist vs atheist? |
|
In real life I never hear people talk about theist vs. atheist. How is it that the r/t forum has crystallized into atheist vs. theist? As if there aren't plenty of other dichotomies to argue about... natural vs. supernatural etc etc

I just don't know what to say.
wtf? Don't kiss your loved ones with that mouth, do you? Why do people have to use foul language in a religious discussion?

16. But what do they offer as proof.... |
|
that "they got it right the first time"? A book, written by men, extremely superstitious men, with an agenda, centuries after the fact. That, to me, is not empirical evidence. It's a wish, a hope, a prayer, having little or no basis in fact.
I agree with you about the other stuff. How could some omnipotent deity take such a hands off approach to it's creation? And instead of manifesting itself in an era when the world could use an omnipotent being's presence, it chose to divulge itself in a tiny corner of the world to only a few people in the bronze age? I know, we can't know god's plan. :eyes: That always covers it with true believers, they don't need to know anything else. It's all god's mysterious, unknown plan. :eyes:

17. There lies the problem, they have no proof. |
|
Well no proof a rational person would honestly accept.

9. science can be arrogant and closed minded, but also can be |
|
quite useful. BUT....until quantum physics gets far enough along where we'll see the marriage of phyics and metaphysics, science isn't everything. There's still room for the invisible and unknowable.

10. You'll never see the marriage of physics and metaphysics as anything more than a question mark |
|
and that is a good thing. Think about it.

14. Some people are too quick to condemn a technology just because it is abused. |
|
Any technology can be abused. Technology is ethically neutral, it is how it is used that is good or bad. Just because Monsanto abuses genetic engineering doesn't make genetic engineering bad. Just because Dow abuses chemical engineering doesn't make man-made compounds bad. Just because Big Pharma abuses pharmaceuticals doesn't make pharmaceuticals bad.

20. Ah, of course. To be an atheist you really need certain beliefs about chemistry. |
|
And of course, people who disagree with you are against better living.
Evil evil them.
And against science, of course.
(Unless I have missed something and you were not complaining about the MJ attitudes)
