Richard Dawkins in Lynchburg, VA |
|
I watched the Q&A video of Mr. Dawkins dicussing faith, reason, evolution, and religion at Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Many of the people asking questions were from Liberty University. I think people in this forum would find this quite interesting. This broken down into 2 hour-long video's...the lecture and the Q&A http://richarddawkins.net/article,303,Reading-of-The-God-Delusion-in-Lynchburg-VA,Richard-Dawkins--C-SPAN2

1. 'Have seen this appearance by Dawkins, and you are exactly right -- |
|
it's genuinely interesting all the way through.
The fundamentalist young folk trying to trip him up must have gone home that night realizing that he was impenetrable. Their arguments and objections just didn't register at all. Dawkins was just about note perfect, seemed like.

I'm going to pee my pants that was so funny. NOTHING is funnier than repeating the same old canards that you know are insulting to people because they have told you so. I bet you are a laugh riot at family reunions.

He can't stop repeating the same. Because he just doesn't have any game. On any small whim We hand his ass back to him. And his responses are always so lame.

9. When you have nothing else in your arsenal, |
|
resort to baseless insults repeated ad nauseum. If you're really careful people might not be able to smell the desperation behind them.

He always resorts to this talk. I wish that he would just take a walk. To cool himself down, And stop acting the clown. His intention is simply to mock.

3. Answers that consist of ridicule rather than answer impress only the choir - as |

to the history lesson, beyond Dawkins not being qualified in history, his implying/calling the Apostle Paul a liar, or demanding "proof" of that does not rely on written testimony, simply doesn't cut it - at least on an intellectual level where the criteria is logic - not just calling others liars.
Indeed it would have been interesting to hear him give his interpretation of what the Bible means when it says something happened - there are believers in the world other than Liberty Fundi-s, all having an individual interpretations - what is Dawkins - beyond all is a lie? Does he have one?

Answers that consist of ridicule Are really, quite simply, darn cool. It takes the brain of a pigeon To believe in religion. But thats not a hard and fast rule.

Our friend Papau is a joker. He reminds me of man called Al Roker. He says we believe. But I think he's just peeved. And wants to kill us with a poker.

Though like a bomb you may tick. You still like my bad limerick. Though we may disagree. There's no third degree, And really, isn't that quite the trick?

14. My head is nodding to Old and In the Way's post on Dawkins, not least |
|
because it was tactically true and intellectually honest.
One may express one's opinions on these boards. Not 3 days ago I spoke in praise of a Bernie Taupin/Elton John song. Earlier this afternoon I had something nice to say about Valerie Plame. In this thread I'm praising Dawkins' performance in the clip the OP has provided for us.
It's timely because some of the questions raised by Dawkins are ageless, and it's instructive, in the way a good teacher would be. Dawkins readily admits to being controversial, but leaves it for others to say if he is a good writer (I believe he is), and if his stage presence is teacherly to his audience, and it meets that requirement as well.
Papua, I have no problem if you don't like Dawkins. But his performance on this clip is compelling and very persuasive. Let others do their own thinking.
