Here's a timeline that shows the progression of religion since the beginning of Christianity. |

2. OK That gave me a good laugh |
|
I'll bet there are hundreds of types of Christianity, and every other religion has a multitude of sects. In all there must be hundreds of varieties. If you compare religion to a pie, each of the sects are only a skinny slice. For me, I'll take the whole pie. Religion sucks. Spirituality and morality are cool. I'll cherry pick the parts I like.

It is easy to maintain a dreary orthodoxy when you are defined by a negation. How could you have a schism in atheism? If you stray one iota from the unprovable belief that there is no God, you are, by definition, no longer atheist.
This chart, as a defense of atheism, is meaningless.

6. I love it when theists say that. |
|
"unprovable belief that there is no God"
LOL!!!! LOL!!!!
First, atheism is not the "belief that there is no god", but the disbelief in the claim by theists that there is a god.
But the best part is the "unprovable" business. When theists claim that there is a god, they offer no proof. But when they are contradicted, they demand proof. It is such hilarious hypocrisy. I just love it!

8. Which shows that there IS a schism in Atheism |
|
That schism being between "weak" atheists who lack a belief in God/gods, and "strong" atheists who do, indeed, assert the belief that there is no God/gods.
Carry on. :hi:

12. You're wrong about the definition. |
|
At least a few dictionaries are in agreement with Beregond2: Where did you get the definition that you prefer to use?

13. You cited it yourself in your first link. |
|
"a disbelief in the existence of deity"
Not to mention the etymology
"Etymology: Middle French athéisme, from athée atheist, from Greek atheos godless, from a- + theos god"
Theism = belief in god(s) A-Theism = without belief in god(s)
As Tech Bear Seattle pointed out, Atheism is not a unified belief system. There are a range of theological positions that all fall into the category of atheism.

I like your chart, I think it is very funny and illustrates its point nicely, but still. :hi:

|
I mean, seriously, how many wars were started by Atheists trying to inflict others with rational thinking?

14. funny, but atheism is much more varied than that. |
|
Strong atheism, weak atheism, implicit vs. explicit, apatheism, etc. Not to mention Agnostics (those heathens). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism#Definitions_and_distinctions

16. I see various branches of atheism. |
|
There are atheists who believe there is no god.
There are atheists who believe that atheism does not believe in a god, oddly similar to a belief once described closer to agnosticism and was once described as freethinkers and the, albeit pejorative sounding, unbeliever. Regardless of the dictionary used, these people, some posting here on DU, hold that atheists ARE NOT believers that god does not exist.
So you have here, today, two branches.
Perhaps we could define even more.
