Is there an official Mormon website that shows the complete text |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 06:04 PM by Boojatta
(in the original language) that appeared on the gold tablets? In other words, I want to see a copy of what Mormons say Joseph Smith saw rather than simply an alleged translation of it.
Edited to add: Of course, by "copy" I don't mean photographs of the tablets, but simply a transcription of what appeared on them.

1. No copies of the gold tablets survive |
|
In fact, none were made. Smith didn't let anyone else look too closely for too long.
However, some tests were made of Smith and his magic stone by handing him texts in other ancient languages for which he confidently supplied translations. Those translations were completely wrong.
Oh, and recent DNA analysis of native Americans show that they have no relationship to Jews, so Smiths story of the God-powered submarines transporting Jews to America and who were the progenitors of the native Americans is bullshit. I bet that comes as a surprise to you...

you will just have to take Joseph Smith's word for it. But here is a website that tells a bit about it: alt.religion.mormon

Joseph Smith directly translated the Tablets to several scribes who were kept behind curtains. They never were allowed to see the Tablets and no copy of the actual text on the Tablets were ever made.
Furthermore the copy of a significant portion of the text (116 pages) were stolen by the wife of one of his scribes. She challenged Smith to redictate the text on the pages. Smith finally admitted that he could not but that God had provided him with the tablets of Nephi which detailed the same basic story from a different point of view.
So there is no copy of the original text. There is only the translations provided by Smith and the translation of the tablets of Nephi.

5. The printer who printed the first copies... |
|
took a page out of one of the chapters and hid it. Then he told Joseph Smith that the page had been lost, and requested Smith to re-translate it. The printer planned to compare the original to the page he had stashed. Smith came back the next day to say God had told him not to include that chapter in the Book of Mormon.
Things that make you go Hmmmmm.

It was 116 pages. And it wasn't the printer. It was the wife of the underwriter of the translation (ie wife of the guy that fronted the money for Smith).

7. Thanks for that correction. |

I heard the story second hand (from a Mormon). That'll teach me to not research my claims before making them. :)

Does the salamander reside in North America?
(Finally we are making some progress here.)
