Poll question: Which current cult is the most dangerous?
In homage to another thread (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3709361&mesg_id=3709361), I ask my fellow DUers:

Which current cult is the most dangerous?

Choice 1: Westboro Baptist Church

Choice 2: The Moonies

Choice 3: $cientology

Choice 4: Amway

Choice 5: FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the one in Texas marrying all those children)

Choice 6: The GOP

Choice 7: Traditionalist Catholicism (Mel Gibson's faith)

Choice 8: All cults are dangerous

Choice 9: Cults are not dangerous

Choice 10: Other (please elaborate in reply)

1. The GOP is now the umbrella organization for all the others.
However, the greatest danger is not on your list. It's the corporations.

3. Not all corporations are cults.
Some of the larger ones may behave like one, but saying all of one thing share the exact same trait as every other member of the groups is an absolute I try to stay away from.

5. Oh no, that's not what I meant. I wasn't saying that corporations are cults.
Most corporations aren't bad all by themselves (with some notable exceptions). It's the system. It's the legal requirement that companies must maximize yields to their stockholders, requiring that profits go up and up. How can profits never stop going up? People have to pay. Layoffs. Outsourcing. Cheaper goods. Higher prices. We're caught in an inhumane trap that is chewing up all but the wealthiest, and their souls are sacrificed too. That's what leads to the cults.

That's what I meant when I said that the biggest danger is the corporations.

4. There is a great amount of uncertainty how strong 1&2 will be after the death of their founders
Hubbard has been dead a long time and the scientologists are stronger/richer than ever.

8. Christianity. Followed closely by Islam and Judaism.
Though I've little doubt Hinduism will eventually make a play for the top tier. Buddhism doesn't have much cooking right now, though you never really know. But so far as the world at large goes, the Judeo-Christian-Islam idiocy is running way out in front.

Went to see some tall ships sail into the harbor today, and a few smarmy little Phelps-wannabees had their signs out telling us we were all going to burn in hell. (Northern Minnesota is known for its rampant immorality, of course. What else to do all winter? Chili and oyster stew, hot dishes, hockey, and buggery).

16. Pastafarians and Fosterites.
Fosterites
Members of the Church of the New Revelation. Their services had the atmosphere of a sales convention or football rally, their theology was a mix of conventional wisdom and pop psychology, and their membership was large enough and active enough to be extremely influential in politics.

19. The "Obama" cult should be on that list...
it florishes here and is frightening...

NO ONE should treat anyone as a "messiah" as too many here do...

It's just plain creepy...

admiration and support is one thing - and there IS a difference...

22. It's a myth.
There isn't an Obama cult; the GOP say that to divert attention from their cult of Reagan.

Popularity isn't a sign of cultism.

21. Tough poll, since the Moonies are the GOP.
If I could vote for both, I would, so I'm gonna place my bet with the destructive ways of the GOP, since the includes the Washington Times.

31. That is a tough one, definitly not the Cathlics though.
Long term, I would have to say the GOP, though they are not a real cult. If Republican is a cult, then Democrat is a cult.

As far as individual disaster goes, I lean towards the FLDS, though it's numbers are smaller than the others.

26. Without as doubt OPUS DEI - the criminal branch of the Vatican
The stalling of the God's Banker Roberto Calvi murder investigation has shrouded Opus Dei's enforcer arm, the pedophile/satanic P2 Lodge and its 50 year association with the Bush family.

Scientology and Warren Jeffs' FLDS wackos pretty nasty considering.

But they are rank amateurs when it comes to comparison with Opus Dei.

Love In Action
Church of Creativity
OM Supreme Truth
Klu Klux Klan
Aryan Nations
LDS
Jihad groups

edit to add: except for LDS and maybe the current form of OM Supreme Truth, every group I listed is far more dangerous than the groups you listed.

He is the ultra-Latin crowd, the one to watch closer is the JPII movement which will be in power for the next generation.
