1. Was there a major 20th century war that anybody really believes was primarily about religion? |

WWI for example doesn't seem to have been a primarily religious war. Nazi propaganda motivating WWII pushed the idea that Germany could seize European lands for colonization purposes, just as Europe had seized much of Africa in the colonial period. Vietnam wasn't about religion.
Wars are usually about resources or political control. Once warmongers decide to push for a war, of course, they are likely to use whatever propaganda techniques they can: they'll tell lies about babies in incubators or mushroom clouds, for example
