Unreleased recordings of Scientology founder unveiled
El Ron Unplugged!

Restoration of lost Scientology materials complete

By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press Writer Matt Sedensky, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jan 8, 5:34 am ET

CLEARWATER, Fla. – More than 1,000 unreleased recordings of lectures by L. Ron Hubbard and reams of corresponding writings have been unveiled in the culmination of a 25-year project to locate, restore and transcribe lost pieces of the Scientology founder's work.

Though sure to be derided by the church's many critics, its followers say the materials amount to an opportunity to deepen understanding of the religion and to release the last known unpublished Hubbard works dealing with Scientology and Dianetics.

"It would be like discovering that Buddha, unbeknownst to anybody, had sat down and wrote down the entirety of his discoveries and it could be verified that he wrote it," said Tommy Davis, the church's top spokesman...

They're also available for sale to members for about $7,500, a price likely to raise some eyebrows, though the church insists no one will be denied access to the materials simply because they don't have the money.

1. Why is anything about scientology in the religion forum?
Do we have a brain-dead forum here at DU?

3. Well, other than R/T, we don't have a Scam Forum. And this...
In 2000, the Italian Supreme Court ruled that Scientology is a religion for legal purposes.

In recent years, religious recognition has also been obtained in a number of other European countries, including Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary, as well as Kyrgyzstan and Taiwan.

There are still a few sane countries, though...

Other countries, notably Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Belgium and the United Kingdom, refuse to grant Scientology religious recognition.

4. And depending on the definition used by others
Scientology is no different than what others call religion. A scam. A form of government with the express purpose of controlling people through fear. At least it was in its origin.

8. What makes Scientology any less plausible than other religions?

14. So because it got made up LATER than other religions got made up, its LESS plausible?
I think you and I feel the same way, I'm just not reading you right.

15. Laconic's point, I think
is that it's all about mythos. Once established for at least a century, any religion usually manages to create a mythos around itself that allows the woo-woo mystics to actually consider it as legitimate as any other religion.

I think the formula goes something like this: sci-fi + 4-5 generations = religion.

17. Pretty much.
The only significance of 100 years is the age difference between Scientology and LDS. They both have kooky sci-fi beliefs, just one's about 100 years older.

16. Better accepted.
Scientology is about as silly as any other religion, just younger. LDS is about 100 years older and is taken more seriously. The longer the big lie gets repeated, the more people are willing to believe it.

12. Thanks for the toast. And welcome!
Here's my welcome to all (fairly) new posters:

"I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat; "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

:hi:

11. Oh, that thing needs a sequel SO badly!

Except I might have a heart attack laughing at it. What a hoot! An overstuffed and overheated casserole of ham, cheese and corn, liberally garnished with hubris. And Travolta's personal money.

It seems almost churlish to point out one minor error. Sort of like pointing out that G.W. Bush is short. But I will anyway. Our Heroes discover perfectly preserved, ready-to-fly AV-8 Harrier "jump jets" on a U.S. Air Force base. But the Air Force has never used the Harrier - only the U.S. Marine Corps does.
