Mary said - worship us or my son will burn you alive, scorch your land and kill your livestock
Well, in all honesty, these are the Virgin Mother herself's own words - "If they do not convert and do penance, my Son will be obliged to punish them.” Notice the quotation marks? Those were used because those were The Virgin Mary's exact words retold 150 years later by Sister Adele. I'm serious. Sister Adele, born Adele Brise was that Nun in Wisconsin who the Vatican recently recognized as some holy something, cant remember what at the moment, you know the one who saw Mary in visions between 2 trees back in the mid 1800's (there's another thread about that in RT). They actually have these fragments from the 2 trees Mary appeared between, so, you know, that's pretty good evidence that that's what she said right? This is a photo of the reliquary thing where they store the tree pieces.

and the actual tree pieces.

Oh, back to the Jesus burning people alive part.
Soon after (well, nearly 12 years after (I'm serious, read on you'll see!!)) that Adele Brise had the vision of Mary between the 2 trees where Mary told her "If they do not convert and do penance, my Son will be obliged to punish them.” Jesus sent fire tornado's down from heaven and burnt a huge piece of Wisconsin killing over 2,500 people, a huge amount more than died in the Chicago fire - that happened on the same day. I guess, because people didn't convert and say the right words, but, more people died in that fire than the Chicago fire and they happened on the exact same day too. There weren't saying that they knew Jesus caused the fire that killed between 1,200 and 2,400 people, because people wouldn't convert see, they just think is strange that it happened so soon (12 years later) to that vision. Strange coincidence huh?

The fire was called The Peshtigo Fire
This is what the official website says about the fire.
We do not propose to pass judgment on the reasons for this catastrophe, but, one day short of 12 years after the Robinsonville apparition, on October 8, 1871, the great calamity fell and a tragedy begat a miracle. The Belgian colony which embraced a large part of the peninsula and included Robinsonville, was visited by the same whirlwind of fire and wind that devastated Peshtigo.

When the tornado of fire approached Robinsonville, Sister Adele and her companions were determined not to abandon the Chapel. Encircled by the inferno, the Sisters, the children, area farmers and their families fled to the Shrine for protection. The statue of Mary was raised reverently and was processed around the sanctuary. When wind and fire threatened suffocation, they turned in another direction to hope and pray, saying the rosary. Hours later, rains came in a downpour, extinguishing the fiery fury outside the Chapel. The Robinsonville area was destroyed and desolate…except for the convent, the school, the Chapel, and the five acres of land consecrated to the Virgin Mary. Though the fire singed the Chapel fence, it had not entered the Chapel grounds. Those assembled at the Chapel, realizing that they had witnessed a miracle, were asked by Sister Adele to retire to the Convent, where they were made as comfortable as possible for the rest of the night.

What’s more, the only livestock to survive the fire were the cattle brought to the Chapel grounds by farmers and their families who came to the Shrine seeking shelter from the firestorm. Though the Chapel well was only a few feet deep, it gave the cattle outside all the water they needed to survive the fire, while many deeper wells in the area went dry. Hence, the Chapel well has been sometimes referred to as the “miraculous well”.

Anyway, I was bored and started looking around at the official website and it's all so freaking weird lol.

1. If you are truly bored, you can educate yourself instead of making a pinata.
67. Throughout the ages, there have been so-called "private" revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ's definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.

5. But, you have to understand that such stuff is pretty much
unbelievable to people who don't believe in any supernatural entities in the first place. There's an explanation for these "private visions," though. You can find it among the symptoms described in the DSM-IV. You believe this stuff? That's fine. For many, however, it's just a collection of hallucinations in people who believe a little too well.

Educating oneself about the beliefs of a religion does not turn one into a believer. It just educates a person about the beliefs of that religion. The writings of the religious are evidence of nothing but the workings of their minds. You're welcome to believe whatever you're able to believe, but please don't ridicule those who do not and cannot believe such things by insulting them as uneducated.

2. I'm proud to say I was thrown out of catechism at an early age. I
asked "disturbing" questions according to Sister Kissmyass....I wanted to know definitions like "covet"..."adultery"..I was six or seven years old. Mother, a devoted Irish Catholic was not amused.

3. Back to the burnt offerings of yore, eh?
From eNotes, http://www.enotes.com/forensic-science/arson">Arson: World of Forensic Science

Arson for profit includes all arsons committed with the expectation of obtaining a gain from the perpetrator (arsonist). It is important to note that the perpetrator does not necessarily need to obtain gain, but to show the intent that gain was going to be obtained. The gain can be direct or indirect. An example of direct gain would be the collection of the insurance money for the replacement of a burned house. Indirect gain would be an increase of business by eliminating (burning) the competitor who was doing business across the street. One of the most important arsons for profit committed in the United States is insurance fraud. This kind of criminal act is relatively widely spread in the United States. Some arsonists found it easier to burn their homes rather than to invest money to repair them. Also, when a vehicle arrives at the end of a lease and the mileage is excessive, arsonists have burned the car, simulating an accidental fire, rather than paying for the extra mileage.

Arson for spite is also known as arson for revenge. This type of arsonist wants to take revenge against a person, a group of persons, an organization or institution, or against society, in general. Some activist organizations for peace, or groups who fight violence against animals, for example, have regularly committed arson and destroyed laboratories or headquarters of research facilities for the sake of their cause.

Arson for excitement is committed by people who are bored, in need of attention, or sexually stimulated by the crime of arson. These criminals are considered dangerous, as they do not have a particular target, and will burn any place or thing that would fulfill their need for excitement, attention, or get them the recognition they think they deserve. Because of the random nature of excitement motivated arsons, when one arsonist commits several burning acts, they are often difficult to profile.

Arson for crime concealment is performed when criminals try to hide another crime. For example, after murdering an individual, the house is set on fire, destroying the body and much of the evidence of the murder activities. In some instances, a vehicle that was stolen for a joy ride or to commit another crime, such as a robbery, is set on fire in order to destroy evidence that would link the authors to the theft. Criminals are aware that fire is a powerful weapon to achieve destruction of evidence. Fortunately, there are many forensic techniques that have been developed throughout the years to retrieve different evidence, such as blood patterns or fingerprints, after a fire.

Arson for vandalism is typically performed by young criminals or juvenile fire setters for no apparent reason. Schools or educational facilities are often the target of such crimes.

- I'm going with "spite" as the correct category to place this in. Although it could be a little of all of them......

Thanks. Here I was, all bored and depressed, and then I read your post and also followed the link. Great stuff!

It's important for everyone to know that pissing off deities is courting disaster.

One of my puritan gr. grandfathers in 1600s Massachusetts got fed up with lightning hitting his barn and burning it down, so when he was on his 3rd or 4th barn and saw a big electrical storm approaching, he figured he was being punished for something he'd done, so he set fire to the barn and burned it down himself - to save the almighty the trouble, he said.
