What is your view of the term "Islamism"? |
|
Is it a word you use? Do you think it means something different to "Islam", or has different connotations, and if so what? Do you find its use offensive? Are there similar terms with reference to other religions, and if not why not?

Is an Islamism some word an Islamic person might say but others might not?
Is there a similar word for Christianity? Maybe something like Christendomism?
It seems made up, and made up by the kind of people who eat Freedom Fries.
I wouldn't use it.

2. It's a fake word created to |
|
implant in people's minds the notion that Islam is, like Communism, EVUL. The creators of the word "Islamism" realize that adding the suffix "ism" to "Islam" can deceive small minds.

3. I do not use it, but I think of Islam, the Religion. No offense. |
|
For it to have negative connotation, needs an adjective like Radical Islamism.

4. It's stupid. Used to cast the religion, Islam, in a bad light. |

5. I understand it to mean the spreading of Islam |
|
So an Islamist is someone who promotes the spread of Islam, as opposed to islamic or islamicist which just describe something that is derived from Islam.

but it's dumb. It's a platform for building fantasies of a pan-Islamic caliphate.

7. Considering that its modern usage started in the mid 1980's, I think its a "fear" word. |

9. I think the "ism" is superfluous. |
|
"Islam" is the word to use when referring to the religion. "Islamic" is an adjective. "Muslim, Moslem or formerly, Mohammedan" can be adjectives or nouns. I've never heard a Muslim call himself an Islamist and judging by the people who use that word, I think it's intended to be derogatory.
