Guess what I saw here in Rio on my bus commute?
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 11:19 PM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
One of those "May 21 2011 End of the World" billboards. Turns out some Brazilian followers of that loon Harold Camping are putting these up.

Translation:
"The Day of Judgment - May 21, 2011"
"Cry strongly to God for His mercy" (maybe He has a hearing problem)
"The Bible guarantees this!"
(Address, website, shortwave radio frequencies, broadcast times)

The one I saw was of the "long" type, like this one:

2. And on May 22 . . .
The jerk will probably say that he prevented the end of the world by his prayers.

10. Second time this preacher has predicted the End of the World
first time was in 1994

as for my friend - he is getting an "All Expense Paid Trip Around the World"

I might not agree with the method - but the means is working out rather well for him

12. So he was off by 17 years the first time. This time he really means it
And, by the way FreakinDJ - Would it be improper for me to tell you how much I love your banana? I mean I know that we have never even met...

5. Doomsday cults are funny. I am taking a college course on cults, and we have been
discussing what happens when their doomsday prophesies fail.

One cult decided their faith was so strong, their alien gods took pity on the world.

The Christian doomsday cults usually say they forgot to calculate something from the Holy Bible. They usually set a new date after the previous date fails to work out.

9. The professor is the only sociologist who infiltrated Heaven's Gate,
the UFO suicide cult.

He offers field trips over some of the weekends to visit various cults. The cult leaders are always cool because college students sometimes join cults.

The professor really seems to love most of the cults out there. The class is super fun.

19. Sounds like you've read "When Prophecy Fails," and something on the Millerite movement?

When I took my Undergrad/Graduate work in History I developed a major interest in apocalyptic movements, something I'm still very interested in. Bernard McGinn has a 3-volume Encyclopedia of Apocalypticism, well worth the purchase if this type of study interests you.

For one thing, his view is way better:

13. WWJD? Last I heard, the Mayan prophesies weren't part of The Bible.
But you've got to admit, if all those who believe they're gonna be raptured disappear on that day, the world will be a much better place.

I'm totally conflicted on this issue... do I want to ridicule, or hope for the best possible outcome for everyone?

My response is...If the world ends. Fine let it i'm surprised God hasn't done it yet for how our species act in this world.

May 21st. Really? Oh what a coincidence of the date. December 21st, 2012 is the end i thought. Man people are just plain stupid.

16. Technically May 21st is supposed to start the rapture. The world actually ends later.
I forget the exact BS behind it. When they're still here I'll laugh at them for not having sufficient faith to go up on the 21st.

22. Oh, the rapture will be on May 21st make no mistake about it.
And don't let anyone forget it. Now if anyone is worthy, well that may be a different story.

Personally when anyone asks me after the 21st, I'm going to say, sure whats his name is gone, why did you think you were worthy?

18. I'm glad no Christian groups ever pull this stuff.
No Christian would ever predict the end, because the Bible specifically states that no man knows the time.

No Christians ever pull this stuff.

I don't get enough chances to compliment them.
