A message for the "I'm a liberal christian, not a right-wing christian" group.
Dan Savage is talking to you, and I agree with him. This is how we, both liberal christians and non-believers, can get on the same team to fight the extremism of the right. YMMV.

4. Good post, cleanhippie!
I'm sharing it with my Unitarian Universalist collegues over at Facebook ("TrUUth Lab" and "Faith of the Free" pages), also bookmarking the unreasonablefaith.com website for the future. Thanks for the heads-up!

7. Just have to mention that I'm so happy to have discovered the UU.
I raised my kids as Christian and have since decided that it wasn't such a good fit for me. I took both my grandchildren to a UU church and Sunday School this past Sunday and it seems to be a great place we can all fit in.

5. Brilliant!
He is right, and some of us are doing just that. My wife and I would not be part of any "Christian group that was not "open and affirming." Our daughter is a prominent lawyer who have been the middle of this struggle. I know cleanhippie and I can finally find common ground. Here is one reason why I asked to "change the subject" so we can get on to what is important to many of us.

11. Meh. Savage doesn't seem to be a particularly insightful political thinker to me.
There is little point in merely arguing: it's only useful if it helps somebody understand something better or if there's a chance that somebody's mind will change

I spent a lot of the 60s arguing with the religious rightwingers who surrounded me in Texas. I never changed their minds, they never changed mine, and neither of us learned much from it, as far as I can tell. All those discussions ever did was convince the rightwingers that I was an atheist, or worse a heretic, or worst of all an apostate

I finally learned it's a waste of blood and treasure to argue with hardcore opponents who can't be convinced

Tony Perkin's and his crowd won't be convinced by anything I say: if I tell such folk they don't speak for me, their most favorable reaction will be somewhat along the lines of -- Yeah, well, opinions are like a******s. Of course, they won't say that exactly, but they've worked out their lines long ago; they know what they'll say

15. You speak truth. Arguments or debates or whatever we call them
are only useful if we all stay open-minded. And hardcore opponents will not be convinced. It took me a while to learn when to engage someone and when to keep my mouth shut. The best I will try to do at this point is to convince people on the right that I am not the devil. Sometimes, that works.

13. Church and state.
Keep them separate and do as Jesus would do. Take care of the poor, the infirm and the children; and 'render unto Caesar what is Caesar's".
