Women of God
http://www.savannahnow.com/stories/032006/3726059.shtml

Equality has come at a snail's pace as some women clergy mark the 50th anniversary of their appearance in the United Methodist and Presbyterian (USA) denominations.

The interview for the ministry resembled more of a CIA interrogation than an introduction to God's work for the Rev. Allison Rhodes.

In 1978, the 21-year-old aspiring pastor found herself seated in a room, surrounded by male clergy and struggling to defend her right to serve as a minister in the United Methodist Church.

As the tears streamed down her face, the district superintendant turned to her and pointed.

"There you go! That's the reason women shouldn't go into the ministry. They're too emotional," Rhodes remembers him saying.

1. One of my closest friend's mother is a Methodist minister.
She's a rather incredible person. Her daughter is transgendered; she married her and her fiance about 2 years ago in a lovely fall wedding. Her church at first told her "no".

2. Actually, for the UMC, that's FULL clergy rights.
Women could preach since about 1880, and do the sacraments since 1928. But the ruling in 1956 gave women the right to vote at conference, in full and equal standing with male clergy.

Snail's pace, perhaps - but we're gaining in strength, numbers, and resolve. :)

Thanks for posting this. Obviously, it's near and dear to my heart. :hi:

8. Hey, Rev!!
My friend's mom reminds me of you, or you of her, or whatever - NOT afraid to do the right thing! She performed the formal service in full vestments, too! :hi:

4. hmmm.....perhaps woman 'see' and 'feel' things differently then men...
ya think???? What's wrong with attempting/attaining a 'holistic' view of the world? Why should it just be from the male perspective? Woman, after all, are 56% +/- of the population.

5. The Full Irony
Men are reputed to be driven by logic while women are reputed to be driven by emotion/intuition.

Which gender, by those guidelines, seems more fitting to serve a ministry of faith?

6. Well...
I guess we can speak about women's rights all we want to in LBN as long as it doesn't involve religion or American women. Yuppers, we've surely come a long way, baby.

9. Channel that emotion logically.
Are you looking for discusson or power in a particular forum? Your link is still in LBN, and the thread will probably get more responses here in R/T anyway.

Btw, I think it's a bit rash to say that American women are a forbidden topic in LBN.

11. The 'logic' on DU never ceases to amaze me

Dear Ms. Parks, were you actually seeking a ride home from work or were you just trying to make a statement? You're still on the bus, what should it matter to you if you sit in the back? You'll probably be more comfortable there with folks of your own type anyway.

-----

My dear, greyl, I'm not sure if you intended to make your post so condescending, but it came across that way just the same. If I'd wanted a discussion in R/T or feminism or Iowa or General Discussion, I would have happily made my post in that forum. This article fell within the guidelines of LBN and I believed it would be of interest to the general population of DU... a population which often links both religion and women's rights when discussing what items need to be changed within the Democratic Party's Platform if we wish to win any national elections. After all, if one's ideas are never challenged, one might go through life believing discrimination is healthy and needed.
