OK, so I'm watching a bit of this Formula 1 race from Germany on FOX. |

And I'm not a major F1 fan - I find much of it boring with little side by side racing.
BUT...
I have to admit, they have some excellent camera work and some nifty graphics. I don't know who is leading or what lap they are one and I don't really care. They have car mounted cameras in some of the cars and these guys are hauling ass. But, what really impressed me is the telemetry they flash as you ride along with the car. These guys are shifting from 2nd to 7th and from 7th to 2nd in a matter of seconds. What REALLY impressed me was the RPM's. These guys are hitting 17.5 - 18 thousand RPM's. 35mph to 170mph in a freaking heartbeat.
The cars look less like cars than they do to some type of weird insect with wheels, and if you look closely you can see the skeletons of these beasts.
They do a pit stop in six seconds, four tires and fuel "injected" into the car in precise amounts at the rate of three gallons a second.
I'm impressed.
Too bad they got some racist pricks representing the sport. Nothing is perfect I guess.

The cars are limited to 18000 RPMs by the rules. Before that, they reached over 19k and up to 20k during qualifying. I agree with you on the boring part, but it was still a nice experience witnessing it live once. When you are almost half a mile away from the track and you begin to hear this distinct howling of a F1 car, that's impressive. The sound/noise of these cars on the track is nothing like what you hear on TV. The acceleration is amazing. When they practice their starts and accelerate from zero, whenever they shift gears, it looks as if they make a jump forward. And when you watch the crew during the pit stops, it looks as if they barely do anything. Just a few moves and suddenly they are finished. I once looked away for a few seconds, looked back and still saw the full crew standing. I was thinking that they messed it up but instead, the first car had already left and the crew was waiting for the teammate.
