Jeter equals Gehrig for Yankees hits record

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter tied legendary Lou Gehrig for the New York Yankees record for hits, notching three hits in a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay to take his total to 2,721 in Yankees pinstripes.

Gehrig got his 2,721st hit on April 29, 1939, a single against the Washington Senators.

The Iron Horse had held the club record for hits since September 6, 1937, when he passed Babe Ruth.

Jeter had a chance to break Gehrig's record in the eighth inning, but he walked against Rays reliever Grant Balfour.

1. Congrats to Jeter.
I hate the Yanks, but I appreciate a good ballplayer.

I'm sure he'll make the 3,000 club long before he's done.
