Illinois went Democratic. North Carolina went Republican. We lose again.

Bush won huge in North Carolina.
Illinois on the other hand might be the bluest state in America.
We can take heart in the fact that the last World Series, Super Bowl, NBA, and College Football champions are all from blue states.

18. But don't forget the mascot |
|
Turning from the states to the specific universities in question -- the Illini left "Chief Illiniwek" at home for the Final Four, but there are serious issues about their team name and mascot. Progressives should be grateful that UNC won. (OK, I admit, I'm an alumnus, I might be just a wee bit biased.)

Coach Smith opposed Vietnam, supported Nuclear freeze, integrated college through recruiting Charlie Scott has been very outspoken in the anti-death penalty "people of faith" group here in NC . . .
Duke's got Coach K, american express, the bs ideology -- 5 players make a fist and all that crud -- and Koach K Kourt (kkk)!
so alliterative and clever!
UNC is the True (southern) Blue!

I'm not a Carolina fan, but I always respected Dean Smith for being a friend of the progressive community.
Any chance he could be talked into running for Senate?

i think he's said that he gave it consideration, but felt uncomfortable -- not for him. i can't remember which election he said he was asked to consider a candidacy for senate, but he was asked.

I can understand his reluctance. Politics is a dirty business.
He'd make a formidable candidate though. A good progressive, and one of the most beloved figures in the state.

i have to admit, he's one who has A LOT of personal loyalty to former players and personal contacts. i was disappointed when he supported Richard Vinroot's candidacy against Dem Gov Mike Easley. Vinroot played for Smith in the 60s. he ain't perfect, but does know what's RIGHT, and for that he's bettered this State.

Roy Williams is a native of ultra conservative western North Carolina.
If I had to venture a guess, I'd say he's a Repuke.
On Edit: I lived in the same part of the state myself for 11 years, and even know what high school 'Ol Roy graduated from. It's possible he's a dem, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Class of '68 I believe.
Asheville is an island of artsy liberals surrounded by a sea of bible thumpin' freepers.
I used to live in Henderson County.

24. I am assuming you posted this |
|
because it doesn't matter what state or whether or not a team comes from a state that is "blue" or "red". Also that a team is made up of many individuals who come from different parts of the country. You also think it is dumb because each individual on a sports team may hold different beliefs. And finally, that it is just sports and not anything that really matters in the political sense.
Is that it?
