Manny was in the shower during Phillies comeback
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 12:06 PM by Upton
It was the biggest moment of the season.

All over Philadelphia, in the stands at Citizens Bank Park, in both dugouts, people tensed as Jonathan Broxton, an out away from tying the series with the Phillies, fired a fastball to Jimmy Rollins.

In the Dodgers' clubhouse, the tension was . . . absent.

"Actually, I was here, taking a shower," Manny Ramirez said.

He did not witness Rollins' two-run double that won Game 4 of the National League Championship Series and gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven competition.

He was devoted to hygiene and dependent on technology:

"I came out and saw the highlight on TV."

The guy truly acts like he doesn't care. I guess this is more of that "Manny being Manny" stuff.

I just wonder how long LA is going to put up with crap like this?

1. yeah i hate fuckers like that.
There are 24 teammates, and there's Barry Bonds.

There are 24 teammates who show up to pose for the team picture, and there's Bonds, who has blown it off for the last two years.

There are 24 teammates who go out on the field before the game to stretch together, and there's Bonds, who usually stretches indoors with his own flex guy.

There are 24 teammates who get on the players' bus at the hotel to go to the park, and there's Bonds, who gets on the bus with the broadcasters, the trainers and the manager who coddles him.

There are 24 teammates who eat the clubhouse spread, and there's Bonds, whose nutritionist brings in special meals for him.

There are 24 teammates who deal with the Giants' publicity man, and there's Bonds, who has his own clubhouse-roving p.r. guy, a freelance artist named Steve Hoskins, who turned down George Will's request for an interview with Bonds because Hoskins had never heard of him.

2. I've got some info for you trumad
I mean beside the fact that your SI article is from 2001. Bonds is no longer in organized baseball, hasn't been since 2007...just thought I'd bring you up to speed.

7. Cancer is cancer, and Manny is a cancer.
Players like that always bring the team down to their level, not the other way around. He was corrosive in the clubhouse, and the OP shows he's still the same way in L.A.. No one here misses him in the slightest, regardless of how Ortiz is doing.

9. "Big Papi is slumping because he can't Roid anymore."
Exactly...so it really doesn't matter who was batting behind him, does it?

11. Who was the last **STAR** Player who left Boston
without being labeled a "cancer", "selfish", "moody", etc...

Yaz? Dewey Evans?

Just look at the list: Manny, Pedro, Boggs, Clemens, Garciaparra, Damon, Mo Vaughn, Jim Rice, Mike Greenwell, Carlton Fisk....all left on less-than-cordial terms.

Co-ink-ee-dink? Not from where I'm sitting here in the cheap seats.

13. That's why they call them the cheap seats, because you can't see anything from them.
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 06:32 PM by Forkboy
:P

Let's go down that list...

Manny: The guy was a great hitter, don't get me wrong, but he was just an endless drama on and off the field. Whether it was faking injuries and forgetting which leg to limp on, to delaying the action for taking a piss inside the Green Monster, to half assed defensive play on all too many nights, to not showing up on time at training camp to a mysterious hamstring that suddenly gets better on Day 1 (he did the same thing to L.A. already), to punching a 63 year old guy for not getting him more free tickets for friends than rules allow for, to punching teammates in the dugout...yeah, those cheap seats don't show you the whole story. You see just the numbers and not what came with them. And what was coming with those numbers was a majorly ugly clubhouse where his antics were just no longer very welcomed, hitting aside. Even his best friend Ortiz said in an interview on tv that they had to move him. He is a great, great hitter (well, who knows now that it's clear he did steroids), but chemistry can't be ignored either, and he was single handedly destroying it. Even if they aren't a better team than they were with him the move had to be made.

Pedro: He was one of the most dominant pitchers I've ever seen in his prime, and I loved having him here. I have nothing against him, and rooted for him on the Phillies.

Boggs: A lot like Pedro. He was awesome, and the closest hitter I saw to Rod Carew until Ichiro came along. He was an arrogant dude, but I've barely heard anyone trash him for how he played here. And if they do, they're wrong, imo.

Clemens: Same as Pedro. If I trash him now it's because he's Republican asswipe who did steroids, not for how he played while in Boston. I do the same to Schilling, for the same reason. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate how they pitched while here.

Garciaparra: I loved him, though I caught a lot of flak for thinking Jeter was still better. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him since he left (though I don't do sports talk radio, and I'm sure people have). Did you see the ovations he got this year when he came back with Oakland? Oh that's right, you can't...you're in the cheap seats.

Damon: The guy left to play for the Yankees, dude. Like you'd be kissing the ass of your favorite player if he decided to bolt to your most hated bitter rival. Clearly, this is why Green Bay has been so warm and receiving to Brett Favre playing in Minnesota. It's like expecting a couple to still get along great after one of them cheated with the most hated person on Earth.

Mo Vaughn: A great guy off the field, and Boston fans still love the guy when he comes around for various charities and functions. I've heard some negative things about him right after he left, but when emotions cooled most fans knew what he stood for, and what he still stands for.

Jim Rice: Well first off, he never left town to play elsewhere. And second, Boston circa 1978 was no racial utopia. The old Sox owner Yawkey once famously opined a couple decades earlier that "no nigger will ever play for the Red Sox". So Rice had some genuine beefs with how he perceived he was being treated by some in the town. That was almost entirely between the team, Rice and the press. It was fans in Rhode Island and here that started the drives to get him inducted into the hall of Fame, and he's certainly welcomed now. The whole thing isn't one of the prettier chapters in Sox history, but for the most part the fans have been pretty solidly in Rice's corner for a long time now. I was ten, personally, and wasn't really even paying much attention to the team (hockey was, and still is, my number one sport passion), so I can't speak to how Rice was treated by the fans then, but I haven't heard anything negative about him in a long, long time.

Greenwell: Well he was a headcase, but he was blast to watch. I've heard a lot of redneck jokes directed his way for his NASCAR ties, but overall it seems he's still seems fairly well liked.

Fisk: I can honestly say I've never personally heard a single person say anything negative about Fisk. Ever. Not once. Not saying it hasn't happened, but there is zero comparison to how the fans here feel about Fisk and how they feel about Manny. It's laughable to even bring his name up in this context.

And are you going to tell us with a straight face that every city doesn't have fans that trash players after they leave town? If so it's time to hail a cab to Real St.

17. I think you guys will be partying hard in a few weeks.
The Yanks have been the team to beat since before the All Star break. If the Sox showed half the hunger the Yanks did they'd still be playing.
