MLB GM meetings are starting soon, give an HONEST assessment of your team |
|
what does your team need, what would you tell your GM to do at the meetings in Chicago?
For the Marlins: STARTING PITCHING!! They need a good veteran starter to fill in the middle of the rotation behind Josh Johnson. Get HanRam, Coglan, and Uggla signed to long term contracts. Get a big bat for the Outfield. Try and get a decent closer and some bullpen depth.
Orioles: RELIEF PITCHING!! Get serious bullpen help. Get a BASERUNNING COACH!! Get a GOOD Veteran starter to mentor all the rookie starters, dump Rich Hill.

Need a big hitter...it will be a transitional year...need a new coach...they were so UNPREPARED for the palyoffs it was laughable. Mainly they have the talent, but need some sort of spark.

19. Your last point is spot on. |
|
They have the talent to win, but they didn't have the hunger, and no one provided a spark for them on a regular basis. Ellsbury and Pedroia did all they could, but no one else really was consistent. For me, they committed the cardinal sin of sports....they were boring.

And they need to fire their GM. And their training staff. And most of the executive staff.
Hell - the owners should just sell the team off. Stupid Wilpons.

38. Mostly they need to stop firing people not named Omar Minaya. |
|
You had a great organization filled with talented people and as they butted heads with the big 0 (That's a zero, but it's also a stand-in for an O as in Omar), he'd get them fired or drive them to quit. It's a joke, everybody in baseball knows that the Mets need to fire Minaya, except the Wilpons. Instead they let him run-off talented scouts and staff and managers and coaches because he's a putz.
/That's just one Red Sox fan from Brooklyn with a family full of Mets fans' take on that thing.

...Salary Cap Minimums and Maximums.
Otherwise crappy owners of teams have no impetus to spend money, and are profitable on day 1 without even needing to sell tickets.
The NFL has the best system. Any team, any year can compete, but the ones that are consistently good have smart owners, managers, and coaches...not the biggest television contracts. They should use that system for all sports.

8. The Rays need a catcher, a right fielder that can hit 285, a DH that |
|
can hit 280 and a center fielder with his head in the game. They may have 2 out of those 4 needs already covered by their farm system.
And they need their starting pitching to return to their 08 form. Hopefully Wade Davis and David Price will come through. A consistent closer would be a blessing. No Scott Kasmir wearing out the bullpen every 5th day should help too.

The S.F. Giants need batters with more plate patience. And an RBI guy.
The Oakland A's need some aging -- like wine, they'll get better with time.
Cleveland needs a new owner with deep pockets.

|
Lord knows they have the pitching, they just couldn't score. I wonder if they'll go after Bay. He was mired in an awful slump for about 6 weeks last year, but he's still got a good pop in his bat when he's on, and I don't see him staying in Boston.

37. Once upon a time, when I was a student at San Francisco State University . . . |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 08:12 PM by Jack Rabbit
. . . and the UFW boycott of Gallo was in full swing, I came across a couple of fellow students down campus who were distributing boycott Gallo liturature. One was holding up a sign proclaiming the cause. "Boycott Gallo?" I said. "Why? That stuff is too shitty to drink and too expensive to use for meat marinade."
* * *
A few weeks later, Cesar Chavez came to speak on campus. He concluded his address by saying: There are three ways to tell if a wine is Gallo. First, if it says Gallo on the label, it's Gallo. Second, if the label says the wine is from Modesto, it's Gallo. If those two ways don't work, then there is yet a third way to tell if the wine is Gallo: Just pour a glass and drink the damn stuff and if it makes you sick, it's Gallo.
* * *
One particularly boring night in the dorms, some other fellow had a bottle of Gallo Hearty Burgundy, their much advertised product, and invited those of us present to partake. In spite of my misgivings, I was bored and nobody else had any booze, so I had a glass. For those of you who had not had any of this stuff, Gallo Hearty Burgundy tastes like Welch's Grape Juice with a shot of raw, industrial strength alcohol.

Having one guy on the team that knows what he's doing isn't going to win many games.

Someone who can drive in runs on a consistent basis. And a true leadoff hitter, preferably a SS because while I love the way Ryan Theriot plays, he isn't a real good SS. More of a second baseman because of his limited range. And one more decent starting pitcher wouldn't hurt either as it looks like Harden won't be back and he really isn't all that good anyway.
