John Daly says Tiger's personal life isn't our business..
John Daly joined the show to talk about Tiger Woods and more.

Dan asked Daly his reaction when the Tiger story unfolded.

"A little shock," Daly said. "I never dreamed that was going on."

Still, Daly maintains that this story has nothing to do with Tiger as a golfer. "It's none of my business," Daly said.

Daly thinks fans should not get hung up on the scandal. "Respect him for his ability, what he can do with a golf ball and worry about what he does in his personal life," Daly said. "Because he's not the only one that's done that in this world. Everybody thinks Tiger Woods is the only one that's done that? Women have done it. Men have done it. It happens."

And Daly, who has been in his own fair share of trouble, thinks Tiger needs to get back on the course as soon as he can. "He screwed up. Just face it and move on," Daly said. "He's got a great coach. A great agent. The greatest caddie. ... Just start practicing and play golf. the sooner he comes and plays golf and wins, the better off."

Daly is amazed that Tiger had all this going on and still won 14 majors. "The amazing thing is doing all this and he still won 14 majors?" Daly said. "What's he going to do when he gets it all right? We're in for a killing from this guy."

On a personal note, Daly said he's down to 182. He used to be 298. He basically was in L.A. and leaned down to tie his shoe and was out of breath, so he got the Lap-Band surgery. Daly said he has a lot more energy and stamina and thinks eventually it will make his game better.

3. I would - Woods is not an elected official - but he marketed a specific image of himself and his
life - to make money. And he knew it, hence why most of the hijinks did not take place with folks on the golf tour, but, rather, on his own or with college buddies.

9. He Was Marketing the American "Dream"
He wasn't marketing marriage and loyalty. That might be inferred by some people, but he was pursuing an image of single-minded focus, hard work, which led to massive success.

I'll buy that he moderately used his family as props, but that was only at times when he had already won another tournament.

At some point, his image became just being Tiger Freakin' Woods. Any specific aspect of image stopped mattering.

10. Let me add: the media and Tiger's endorsers were the real marketers
It's not just Woods. Nike, Buick, Gillette, the PGA, Golf Magazine, People Magazine, CBS, ABC, ESPN, etc. made tons of money by promoting this faux image of idealism.

2. Agree and disagree with Big John,
coming from the train wreck that was his life and the public spectacle he was, he may know a thing or two about the pressures of life as a top pro.

Where I think he's wrong is that Tiger made his personal life part of his business empire. Sponsors looked at him and he presented himself to them as the player who was also a good family man and that's what they were paying him for.

5. So why is his public life?
Celebs want to pick and choose when the cameras are on or off? Only write good stuff about me? Only tell the public that I'm a great family man and that's why sponsors love me?

6. It's Tiger's job to keep his private life private.
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 11:44 AM by Iggo
Sorry, Tiger, but if your "private" life is plastered all over my TV, it ain't really private, is it?

None of my business? Sure. I agree with that. But privacy left the building a long time ago.

7. Why should respect (for anyone) be based on what a person can do with a ball,
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 12:34 PM by petronius
and not on how he treats his spouse? I enjoy sports, and I am frequently impressed, awed, entertained by the physical prowess of athletes, but respect? That comes from somewhere else.

Tiger and Daly are happy to put their personal lives on display when it suits them (it's funny that the other part of the snip involves discussion of some of Daly's personal business) so if parts of their personal lives that they'd prefer to keep secret provide entertainment, I say tough luck for them. It's tough luck for Nordegren too, which is unfair, but I notice that Daly didn't mention her privacy...
