About the Red Sox Fan
I saw the video of the incident last night. From my point of view the fan was not trying to hit Sheffield. It seemed as if the fan may have been trying to go after the ball or doing something else. It seemed as if the fan did not even hit Sheffield. So I contend all this media stuff about Sheffield showed great restraint is foolish to me. The fan did not even hit Sheffield and may not have been trying to hit him. What do Duers think?

1. The Boston and NY sports writers must be all over this
what are they saying?

What is Sheffield saying?

What is the "fan" saying?

2. I think the fan
should not have reached out as he did. Regardless of if he intended to hit Sheffield or not, what he did ws stupid, and showed a dangerous lack of boundries.

But, just to try to stir the pot, I'll add that the same Red Sox fans that seem to despise the Yankees also are the ones who make vicious personal attacks on another Native Son of NYC, Mike Tyson. I dare -- no, I double dare one of you Red Sox fans to take a swing at Tyson and then say you didn't mean anything by it.

4. Not Fan
First, I am neither a Red Sox or Yankees fan and I do not despise the Yankees. Second, if I somehow inadverntly hit Tyson or somehow swiped my hand by him I would not want to be beaten and I would not want the media to make out like Tyson did a great thing by not beating my.

7. Here's Analagous Situation
You are on your job. You have a group of people behind you calling you and your family name for three hours, using every vile insult that you can. In the middle of your job, one of these people take a swing at you from behind. How would you react?

10. Problem
The problem is I do not think the guy tried to hit or hit Sheffield. If someone just swang their arm passed me then I would not react. I think the guy was just attempting to pick up the ball.

11. "not fan"
I said Red Sox fans, not you. My comment on Tyson was tongue-in-cheek, not meant serious.

22. Just Responding
I just wanted you to know that I did not write what I wrote because I was a fan of the Red Sox or because I dispised the Yankees. For the Tyson comment I was just resonding.

3. fans will do anything
to get a souvenir baseball. They reach over, fall out of the stands on their heads, even try to get to it before a player. It is stupid but hardly an attack on a player. Poor Sheffield, aren't the steroids, growth hormone, and other supps out of his system yet?

8. Wrong. The Ball That Bartman Went After Was A Foul Ball
The ball could have been caught by the player, but it was clearly a foul ball. The ball in the Red Sox-Yankees game was a fair ball. It was well in the field of play.

Imagine a fumble during a football game, and a fan reach out onto the field to try to get the ball.

5. The Fan Reached Over Into The Field of Play And Hit
Sheffield in his face. It may or may not have been intentional. Sheffield had no way of knowing if it was. That Red Sox fan was dead wrong, but Red Sox fans are perpetually immature and childish. So, they can get away with it. If the situation had been reversed, then there would be a thousand threads on the DU Sports forum about how "evil" Yankees fans are.

12. I basically saw what you saw.
Sheffield didn't maintain focus, and he didn't maintain restraint, in my opinion. And I don't think the fan was even looking at Sheffield. He appears to be celebrating and gyrating, watching the runners score. Yeah, it was ignorant and foolish of the fan, but I don't think it was on purpose, and I don't think Sheffield should act so surprised about dealing with difficulties getting to a ball. And certainly the Yankees need to chill with their stranger danger talk about the fans.

13. And Right, You're Not Another Yankee-Hating Fan
that excuses fan interference on a live ball in fair territory because it was the Yankees.

If a Red Sox fan stabbed Sheffield, some of you here would excuse that as well.

So, it's okay in your world for fans to interfere and hit Yankees in the face during play. That's okay with you, right?

So who, exactly, are you responding to?

17. The universe
Which, in its cruelty, has stripped the Yankees of their seeming invincibility, dropped them into last place with Tampa Bay, sent Jeter on a 1-12 skid, and worst of all, let Sox fans be happy for once.

He'll tell you it's about the fan, but really it isn't. Being a Yankee fan isn't as easy and fun as it used to be, and that has to sting.

Watch. He'll keep going. This will be a season-long party. I'm LMAO. This is better than Broadway.
