Roy, oh Roy! Why have they forsaken you??? |
|
McCants, Felton, May, and even the frosh Williams - GONE! If it wasn't so sad for NCAA basketball, I'd laugh. Wonder if the powers at UNC knew their school was becoming an NBA-preseason camp when they brought Ol' Roy onboard?

2. couldn't tell ya - maybe something in the Chapel Hill water? |

Of course, I have little room to snark here as a Duke fan - Luol Deng pretty much shat all over Coach K's player retention record. Hell, at least most of the guys who left Duke early before Deng GRADUATED early (Boozer, Ja(son)y Williams).

At least Deng can play in the NBA. I remember when Coach K made public statements saying that Avery wasn't ready, and lo and behold -- he was right.

3. Probably because he recruited them with that in mind. |
|
He had to know when he recruited players like Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich and Wayne Simien that they were the type of players who would want to stay in college basketball.
Give it a few years and see whether this trend continues, or whether he starts getting the same types of players he had at Kansas. That being said, I don;t know whether he recruited Marvin Williams, or whether he had already committed when Roy got the job.

6. Ouch, that has to hurt |

I don't think I've ever seen a team lose its top 7 players all in one year. May made a good choice, as I don't think he has much more to prove. I'm not as sure about Felton and McCants. McCants was very good earlier in his career, but has not been impressive recently. He seems like the type of player who could be unstoppable if he puts his mind to it. Many people say Williams was trying to beat the proposed 20 year old rule from the NBA. Given that they always draft on potential over production, he made a good decision.
As an ABD'er, I hate to say this, but the title is Dook's to lose next year. PG is about the only question mark, but they should be able to make something work between Paulus and Dockery. Heck, most of us could be an adequate PG with guys like Redick and Williams to work with.
