1. More on that here:
Report: Pacific-10, Big 12 conferences could form superleague that would remake college sports landscape

The big news in college sports today is a report that the Pacific-10 Conference may attempt to lure six teams from the Big 12 Conference to form a superleague that would dramatically alter the college landscape.

Chip Brown, a former Dallas Morning News writer who now works for the Rivals.com affiliated site Orangebloods reports:

(I)t appears the Pac-10, which has its meetings in San Francisco starting this weekend, is prepared to make a bold move and invite Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado to join its league, according to multiple sources close to the situation....

The six teams from the Big 12 would be in an eight-team division with Arizona and Arizona State. The other eight-team division would consist of USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

Prior to Brown's report, columnist Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman had floated a similar scenario - with different teams - on Sunday. In that piece he wrote:

My suggestion (for the Big XII)? Align with the Pac-10. The Southeastern Conference is closer geographically and in some ways culturally, but an expanded SEC likely wouldn't go past Texas and A&M.

Convince Texas that its best interests are to stay with much of its current Big 12 members and head west.

The Pac-10 in some ways is like the Big 12. A little isolated. A little behind in television revenue. A little apprehensive with all the talk going on around the Great Lakes.

A confederation of A&M, Texas, OU, Kansas and two from the group of OSU, Tech, K-State or Colorado (let the politics sort it out; my vote is OSU and Colorado) could join Arizona State and Arizona to form an East Division of the Pac-16, with the eight coastal schools comprising the West Division

The move as outlined by Brown, if made, would create a conference with seven of the country's top 20 TV markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, Phoenix, Seattle and Sacramento).

3. What about poor lonely Baylor?
They should have never been in the Big 12 to begin with. TCU should have.

2. That would be stupid. Evidently they don't realize that the PAC in PAC-10
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 07:11 PM by 4lbs
stands for PACIFIC Athletic Conference.

If the PAC-10 wants to expand, how about adding other Division I colleges along the Pacific?

You know, like San Diego State, Fresno State, and San Jose State. Heck, even Boise State would be a better addition, and would give BSU those prime matchups they've been desiring. Then the newly designated PAC-14 could split into two divisions, and play a conference championship like most of the other conferences.

5. They won't add the second tier schools because they aren't major universities
That would be my guess.

6. Other than that the first 3 that I mentioned have larger enrollments than Stanford.
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 07:29 PM by 4lbs
Stanford had about 15,000 students enrolled last year.

SDSU has around 30,000

San Jose State and Fresno State each have at least 18,000.

So, if they aren't considered major universities, then neither should Stanford.

There was a chance for SDSU to join the PAC-10 decades ago, but it was voted down by the rest of the conference, mainly by USC.

The main reason, especially for SDSU, is that most of the PAC-10 has been raiding San Diego for some time now. Adding SDSU would give San Diego area high school students less of a reason to go to the other schools in the PAC-10. They could just stay at home.

Imagine if Reggie Bush, Marcus Allen, and Junior Seau attended SDSU instead of USC.

8. Has more to do with the prominence and prestige of the schools-
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 07:59 PM by depakid
Portland State has a larger enrollment than the University of Oregon, but fact is- (eat it Rodentia) that the Ducks are Oregon's signature team and its signature university.

(One might also come to the conclusion with respect to Boise State that none of the teams in the PAC 10- or the Big 12 would want to schedule Boise State year in and year out). :o

20. It has been Hawai'i's long-time goal to join the Pac-10
not only is it in the Pacific, but its enrollment is about that of either of the two Oregon schools.

Figures all this would come about during a down period for Warrior football. :eyes:

7. Hey Condem....Pac-10 statement..
"We are aware of a story filed today by an Orangebloods.com columnist, speculating about possible expansion plans for the Pac-10 Conference. While many interesting scenarios have been suggested in numerous news reports, around the country, we remain focused on a thorough evaluation process that examines all of the options for increasing the value of the conference for our member institutions, our student athletes and our fans. We have not developed any definitive plans. We have not extended any invitations for expansion and we do not anticipate any such decisions in the near term."

9. Of course they are going to say that, Upton.
I posted this after I saw it at 3 this afternoon. The Hawkeyenation board went ballistic. Still is. May not happen. But a coupla' clues. mad should be able to back me up since he's been intensely following it, as have I. About a month ago (maybe six weeks), JoePa said he believed the PAC-10 would move first. Yesterday, Tom Osbourne hinted that something was going down. I posted that last night. We shall see. But the scenario is pointing to 4 super-coferences. I think, Upton, if this move goes down the PAC-10 would be instantly be on par with the SEC. Then the Big 10, providing they get ND, Nebraska, Mizzou and a couple of Big East schools, and the ACC. It would be a great move for you folks.

following the speculation and rumors and gossip is a hell of a lot more fun that crocheting or origami for that matter. Productivity at this hour on a Thursday evening would be annoying and noisy, like that guy who always chooses to mow his lawn at dusk.

Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 10:20 PM by madinmaryland
is really pretty cool. I saw the SCOTUS in action about a year and a half ago. Interesting argument. Puts to shame any college baseball game that Condem is chattering about.

Then there are the monuments, museums, and all the history! Pretty cool! Going to the Jefferson Memorial this last spring during the Cherry Blossom Festival brought a tear to my eyes.

And that was after I moved down to Maryland after working in THE CITY for 15 years.

BTW, if you are ever out east there are several places that make excellent crabcakes. I just got hungry, AGAIN!!

They could do nothing at all but it doesn't look like that way at all because of the power they granted Larry Scott. Not sure what to think, just that it would certainly change things. Thanks for keeping tabs on these stories, it sure is interesting and somehow exciting at the same time.

...but I would imagine Mizzou and Nebraska are coming to the Big Ten. Which leaves the big question about ND. I think Delaney wants to address this first and foremost. I find it exciting as hell because its going to alter ths college landscape as we know it. A lot of folks here hate the idea of mega-conferences but change is part of life. So, get on the train and enjoy the ride. Half the fun is getting there.

31. Check out reply #9, Upton.
If what OrangeBlood's scenario indeed goes down, then the new PAC-10 will be on par with the SEC. But the SEC won't stand pat. Miami, FSU, Clemson and perhaps VT will join. The Big 10 will HAVE to have a, hopefully, improving ND along with Nebraska and Mizzou and still be a step down. Maybe forget Rutgers and add KU and KState. Then it would be the BEST hoop conference. LOL!!

how about Georgia Tech? They make sense geographically, and Georgia already recruits right there. VT seems a bit distant, and Slive said they want to intensify their dominance of the region, not expand outwards.

37. not really
the B10 would get Missouri which is a decent pickup.

Then ND would likely end up joining as the BE falls apart, picked over by the other conferences.

Toss in a decent team like Pitt, or Syracuse, and the B10 is every bit a top conference.
